DE - Florida State

Seen this guy compared to Paul Kruger and JJ Watt. I'm liking that, at least.

It certainly seems like we weren't going to pick Floyd anyways, which is who I was pulling for with a great deal of excitement. In hindsight, you can't overlook production in college. In the couple of game tapes I watched of him against Miami and NC State, he was given a lot of attention by the o-line, usually being doubled by the running back/tight end or having a guard slide over to help the tackle. My only concern was a lack of a real bull rush (which usually a lb doesn't have as much) and that sometimes he seemed to quit on plays before they were done. He has the athleticism to play every down.

Of course, Jerry Hughes was also productive in college, so...

So that would indicate that we didn't want Floyd at all anyway. Now that could be posturing but I think Grigs is telling the truth here.

Also Bent, you can't say it would have cost us a first next year or all our picks just to move up 2 spots. The 49ers moved from 31 to 18 and just gave up a 3rd rounder. Not saying we should have traded up, but clearly we could have moved to 18 from 24 without giving up too much.
Maybe if we made a move early and jumped before the other teams did, but once we waited until pick 20 it was going to cost us quite a bit to pry one of those picks away. That's my only point.

At the very least we would have had to offer as much as the Falcons did to get the Rams pick. That was: a third- and a sixth-round pick.

Again, I don't think we wanted him anyway. Just a point about trading. It's not always as easy as fans assume.

Most trades are "chart-specific", which does make trading alot easier to accomplish. But it always takes 2 to dance.

Well the Falcons were picking at what, 29th? 30th? So I don't think its true that we would have to give up as much if we are offering the #24 pick. No way do we give up as much if the team is only sliding 2 spots instead of 7 or 8.

I don't watch a lot of college football, or any really, so until proven otherwise I am going to trust Grigson.

Grigson said after the draft that Werner was their number 1 target. He said they didn't even consider trading down when he was still on the board. That after they saw the Vikings pick, it was immediately high fives and smiles.

He also said that sometimes you hope guys don't do as well at the combine so that people overreact to their numbers and let them slip.
I believe Grigson, because the pick was in very quickly when it was the Colts turn.

And I think that Pags really wanted him and believes he can make him into another Kruger.

I am still trying to wrap my head around this pick. On ESPN this morning they talked briefly about more situational type players being drafted higher, which I guess helps me understand why with only one pick in the first two rounds we took, per Pags, a situational pass rusher. To me, with only one pick in those two rounds, you try to get a stud/starter. I look back after Werner was taken and I see guys like Rhodes, Jones, Hopkins, and Elam etc. and I see instant impact on all four (3) downs. I see a guy like Lacy or Ball, still out there, carrying the rock multiple times in a game, banging the LOS.

Last night McGinnest said that Werner was not strong enough to seal the corner in a 4-3, and had never played 3/4, which are kind of the reasons why the Colts are letting go of Freeney. He ran a 4.81 at the combine. And he is suppose to become a pass rushing OLB. In a way this sounds like Hughes, who while being faster, put his hand down in college, but was asked to stand up in the pro's.
But, I liked the Hughes pick. I still don't understand what happened there. Maybe it's between the ears.

I'm not going to go into it further because it's not that I don't want to see the guy or the team succeed, obviously i do. They are putting a premium on getting another a guy who can rush the passer, which sounds alot like Polian philosophy. I thought this is why they signed the dude from the Falcons, who I honestly think is going to be decent.

So, i hope that this guy pans out and I'll be rooting for him. But I can't say that I feel good about the value of it.

On to the other rounds.

First of all, Willie hates the Colts and is WRONG. He also said that the Colts didn't do much in F.A. Rolls eyes...

The way the roster sits right now, all the jersey numbers in the 50s and 90s are taken, so it looks like what - a 40s number?

As far as how this guy does in the League, time will tell, but I liked the pick. Reading quotes from Pagano, he's a 3 down player...

http://www.colts.com/news/article-1/EDGE-SETTER-ON-BOARD/8f1920b0-e5fe-441d-a926-2837cb8b1767
“He’s an outside linebacker,” said Pagano. “(On) first and second down, he’s an edge-setter. We talk about those guys being able to set the edge in the run game. He certainly can do that.

“He’s a dynamic pass rusher. We knew we needed to address that. It just so happens we addressed that. He was the highest-rated player on the board at the time. We can do a lot of things with this guy.”

“(On) first and second down, he’s going to be an edge-setter and play the run game for us,” said Pagano. “On third down, there’s a multitude of things we can do with this guy. The simplest is line him up opposite of Robert (Mathis) and tell him, ‘Sick him. Go get the quarterback.’ ”

“His ceiling is enormous,” said Pagano. “(At) Florida State, every year he got better. His numbers got better every year. He’s still learning. We feel like he has a very high ceiling. Obviously, his future is very bright.”

I don't get where the 2 down player stuff comes from. He is a big boy, he can play the run at LB, and he can rush the passer from DE or OLB spot when need be. Maybe he isn't the fastest most athletic 3-4 OLB to walk the earth, but piling up dynamic guys for this front 7 is A-ok with me. Regardless of their speciality.

If I had watched any video on this guy before draft, I would had been crazy about him before draft. After watching his highlights, he is very quick, first player off the step. Great football instincts, great awareness.
We needed some pass rushing help. He will help. Will not have to see Jerry Hughes as much on plays. We got 3 OLB this offseason
He reminds me very much of JJ Watt

Everything I've read said he was a consensus top 15 pick until they put the shorts on, and perennial Pro Bowlers Ryan Leaf and Tony Mandarich wowed everyone in shorts. Meanwhile guys like Jerry Rice and Dan Marino fell because they didn't look good in shorts.

I'm fine with the pick.

Grigson has said the same thing after both draft he has been in charge of for us. They are not worried about how a guy looks in shorts when they have hours of tape with a guy jumping off the screen. Who cares how fast a DE/OLB is without the instincts and ability to be first off the snap? Werner ain't gonna be running 40 yards to sack a QB.

The Rams were willing to move down though because their guy wasn't going right away, so they wanted something a little more substantial in return. It means we would have had to offer more.

Florida State may not be the Harvard of the South, but I suspect you need to speak and understand English to remain academically eligible.

If anyone is really interested in his English language skills, I am sure there is an interview somewhere on the web.

Nothing wrong with his english. I heard him interviewed on the local stations. Dude learned the rules of the NFL playing Madden on Play Station as a kid. His favorite players on Madden...Freeney and Mathis...go figure.
