Was hurt much of 2012 with leg and ankle issues but played all but 2 games
USC really suffered the games he missed. Has graduated with 2 degrees.
Good player, will be good at center or guard. May start for us at center
Might have 4 new starters on our OL

The braintrust said that the OL was in need of improvement and they have followed it with actions, both through FA and now the draft. Looking forward to see how improved our OL is this year!.

Can't believe we passed on Quinton Patton to draft this guy. Schwenke, fine. But this guy?
He'd better eventaully become a starter, or we screwed up here.

I have faith in this mgt team, particularly Grigson being a former OL, in doing much better evaluations of OL. This draft will certainly go towards proving/disproving that.

Agreed, but I'd still rather have taken Patton. I view this as a bit of a reach, whereas Patton was seemingly a steal. And a more pressing need.

Everyone wanted us to address the offensive line. We certainly did this draft. We added depth in addition to potential starters.

Yeah, but fair value is just that.

I would have liked Patton also, but if Bey plays to potential and Hilton and Brazill improve we do not need a WR yet. I think we can address our WR needs with undrafted free agents or after training camp cuts. The Holmes pick will either encourage Satele to pick up his game or we will have another new starter on the line with Satele backing Holmes up. Also, Holmes can play guard. So, we have a potential starter and a backup at two positions. I like the pick. I think we can address our WR need later this year or next with someone better than Patton. :deal:

I thought we'd take a WR in the early to mid rounds, but obviously they wanted to address the lines, which I'm good with. We have three young WRs with a fair degree of potential. It's time to see if they mature into long term options. Truthfully though, I could see us going WR early next year.

I would certainly hope so. Reggie ain't getting any younger, Brazill is an unknown in my eyes and TY is no longer an unknown to the opposition.

The only way this is a "miss" is if Patton excels at the pro level, and Holmes doesn't. I think we need a true, no.1 type WR, and those are more often found with a pick in the top 30 or 40 picks. I do not think Patton will develop into much more than a solid 2 at best.
I thought the pick at 24, the way the draft played out, could have been one of Werner, Datone Jones or Cordarelle Patterson based on that (even Margus Hunt). Once we passed on Patterson, I had no problems with the way the picks unfolded. I think Patton could become a good no 2, but I'd rather try and upgrade the OL. No doubt, next year will see a highly touted WR prospect brought in, one with, probably, zero concerns talent or character wise, and Andrew Luck will have a much better line to help his (and the receiver's) passing game. The UDFA WR - Sampson - the video available of him shows some surprising ability. Again, love this offseason's mgmt team moves.

I really like the players they targeted late - players like the TE and RB who could actually be contributors on the field in limited roles, and the rehabbing safety, a medical gamble who was at least a 3rd rd (2nd?) talent prior to missing most of 2012.

And I really like how they will trade a mid-rd pick from the following year's draft to go after someone they like who's slipped - this year (last yr was Hilton), the big NT. A physical talent like that is surely worth a 4th rd pick.
To sum up my thoughts - for years, Peyton Manning got criticized for playoff losses - "all those weapons" etc etc. The analysts never mentioned the really inferior Olines throughout most of his tenure. Meanwhile, they'd laud Tom Brady for his QB play "despite the lack of weapons" - which was a major exaggeration, and only in later years, would give his Oline any credit - an OL that was superior throughout his tenure.
I love how this mgmt team is doing exactly what they said they would - "build the monster" - build the Oline and defensive front 7 first and foremost. Give Luck a line to protect him, and he, like Peyton, will make mediocre receivers solid. If mgmt sticks to the plan, he'll have an OL that won't be exposed (with Luck then taking the blame) come playoff time.
One final blather - I hope Donald Brown can remain healthy this year. With this Oline coming together by week 3 or 4, our backs could be in for a pleasant surprise. Donald Brown, love him or hate him, has the burst to make some real plays if he has a hole to hit. I think this Oline will be way better in this department.

This reload is going to be so interesting to watch. This training camp is going to be so competitive at so many positions, I think this team is gonna be really fun to watch as they start to feel their oats. I think we will start to see a new, power attitude running the ball, and more of a bully attitude on defence, by the end of the season's first quarter.

I never meant to suggest that Patton will turn into a star, but from what I have gleaned, he should develop into a nice player. Besides, nuthin wrong with a solid #2 W.R. As for Holmes, I've heard conflicting information about his skillset. But he was hurt and has good bloodlines and great character. I'm also aware of the need. I just wish we could have landed Schwenke, which would have been a gas.

Well, Schwenke went at pick 107, 14 picks before we got Holmes. So a question may be who'd prefer Schwenke to Thornton, who we took at 86. I like the info on the guard more than the centre in terms of what we need.

Now Holmes went before Patton. (Just edited after I checked the positions), so there's a pick some would argue for.

There's always certain players fans start to follow and hope we pick - I was hoping for WR DaRick Rogers, who people say has 1st rd talent. He went to the Bills as an UDFA.
But the way the draft unfolded, I can't complian. And I'd rather the Colts target a WR in rds 1 or 2 next year than a WR in rd 4 with a projected low (NFL) ceiling. I like the way we focused on protecting Luck, and adding defensive scheme talent (Werner) and NT size with high ceiling (Hughes).
Of course, if they bust and Patton or Schwenke excel, then we picked the wrong dudes.

I may have taken Schwenke before Thornton, myself. But I don't do the picking for a living.

We drafted a bunch of college centers a few years ago though and tried to convert them to guard. Didn't work. I like Thornton, even if he's a little bit of a project and doesn't start over McGlynn on Day 1, as many fans assume. Really doubt that happens actually. Think he'll be a little bit of a project.

I like Schwenke at Center, and that's where I'd play him. Satele needs to go next.

Satele was apparently hobbled all year, and Shipley surprised most of us. I will be rooting for a healthy Satele and Holmes to come on, but even if it's a repeat, I think the RG spot was worse even than center.

After a few games together, there is just no way this Oline won't be markedly better than last year's (or the number of years!).

Just glad that - finally - the team is drafting and (FA) signing big, physical interior linemen, as opposed to drafting "intelligent" 290 lb OGs in rds 6 and 7 (or UDFAs). Who get trucked in the playoffs.

Errsay's guy impresses Harbaugh before his first practice. Appreciate the enthusiasm, but could it be more guys don't do this because they know better?
