Sounds like a hardworker and we needed to address our safety depth for sure. Could eventually become a starter.

Did 27 reps on bench press, sounds like a good special team player . Will compete for back up safety role

And if Landry doesn't impress and the kid is a sixth round surprise like Bethea was, he could eventually become our starting SS.

Boyett is a perfect player a team should draft late, and hope for recovery from surgery (like Lattimore). He was a super talent in 2010 and 2011. Apparently recovering from surgery on both patellar tendons, and his recovery is on schedule. If he does have a full recovery, he is a really good looking safety prospect - based on a teency bit of reading, and about 5 minutes of videotape.

Landry had darn better impress.
He's entering his seventh season and will never be much more than what he's been to this point. I hope we can find some young safeties to develop.

Landry is an upgrade over last year, a significant one. Our run D was really bad, and has been addressed in a major way this offseason.

The ONLY thing that hasn't been addressed is probably Reggie's eventual successor as our no.1 receiver. Yes we need that, but with all the issues we had, that's pretty remarkable. Yes we went 11 and 5, but our weaknesses were exposed in the playoff loss (an during the reg season, despite the wins).

I was really referring to his huge payday, and how it has to be justified. I would gladly take a repeat performance of last year's play. And yes, I'm fully aware of the need for an infusion of some new blood at Safety.

That's more than enough to qualify you as an expert on the subject! :-D

Bethea and Landry will make a good pair at safety. Boyett could be our #3 safety. Think we are decent at safety
Landry was very impressive last year

Boyett played more strong safety in college. I'd like to see someone eventually replace Bethea at FS, too, as he's not been that good in pass coverage the past two seasons. Just don't know that this kid will be that player.

He's really a more talented Zbikowski or a poor man's John Lynch. I wouldn't be shocked if Grigson prioritizes WR and Safety next year.

I concur - barring someone at another position available who sticks out like a sore thumb, I'd think Wr and (free) safety rds 1 and 2 would be no surprise.

One safety I thought we might grab was Phillip Thomas for those same reasons.

I really think we will see a serious transformation from last year (and years past) by week 5.

Grigson and Pags have now firmly planted their prints on this team. Team is much bigger and physical, with more "scheme-correct" pieces.

In short, it's what many people wanted all of those years with Polian and Dungy in charge. We've moved away from zone blocking offensive linemen and speedy, 4-3 cover two guys. Will be interesting to see if it works out for the better.

I had read that while we got away from zone blocking last year, our new O coordinator was bringing it back for this year. Is that true?

Ain't gonna be easy to top what the previous regime has accomplished, but it is possible.

Record wise I agree with you, and that's really what matters most. But in terms of defense, there isn't a lot to live up to.

I don't know, but the guys we've brought in are about 30-50 pounds heavier than the guys we had before. Not that weight says it all, but at the NFL level it often translates to stronger.

Defense shmefense. It's about winning. The Ravens didn't win with defense, contrary to popular misconception. To win big in this league now, you need big time offense and efficient defense. 3rd. down and takeaways. Polian and Dungy had it absolutely correct, but some moves just betrayed them. But their philosophy wasn't all that flawed.

I agree. The better the defense, the more margin for error you have on offense.

Talented receivers who can go down field and catch toss ups helps. Did throughout the playoffs anyway.
