THE CONFEDERATE UNION
BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO CITIZENSHIP AND OPPORTUNITY

---

Welcome to the Confederate Union. If you are reading this, you are either a new citizen, or someone interested in having citizenship here in our fair region. But it's not always easy to understand how a region is operated right of the bat, so we've decided to have this beginner's guide to the region posted for your conveinence. Please read the information carefully, as it may answer many of the questions you have before and after becoming a citizen.

---

About the Region
The Confederate Union is an alternative historical region, based upon the Antebellum period of the Southern United States. Similar to that of the Confederate States of America, but without the ill and narrow minded views of the time's conservatism and violation of human rights. You could say that we drew the best from the North and the South, and combined it into one.

To learn more about the region itself, such as the laws and the Constitution which defines our structure, you can click here.

Applying for Citizenship
So you've decided that you want to become a citizen here, well that's terrific! But there's a few steps you will need to take prior to submitting an application.

The first step is to assure that you have a nation in our region on NationStates. This nation will serve as your home state in the region, which you may choose to represent in our government eventually (we will elaborate on this later). It also helps us maintain a proper census and assures we have an accurate information of ourselves.

The next step is to register an account here on our forum. As the vast majority of our region's affairs are conducted here, any participation sought is done so on the boards. Registration is easy and free, and takes only minutes, just follow the prompts and you'll be a registered member on the board in no time, and one step closer to citizenship!

After you have registered an account, the last step is to submit an application. The Secretary of Naturalization, or the region founder will review your application and either approve or deny it.

If you are approved, you will be notified in your application thread, and your accont will be masked as a citien so that you may access other sections of the board, and continue with your career and livelyhood within the region.

If you are rejected, you will be privately notified of the rejection along with the reasons for being denied citizenship and any possibility of re-submitting for citizenship at a later date.

Land Claims
If you want to participate in the legislative body of government, you must represent a part of the region. In order to represent a part of the region, you must stake a claim of land within it. To do this, you go to the Office of Land Claims.

Once there, look at the current map to see what land is available. Please note that we don't tend to give lots of land to brand new people, as we want to assure everyone gets a chance to have land, so please be conservative in your claim. Once you have decided on the area of land you wish to claim, fill out the application in the office. This land represents your nation (state) in the region. Make sense now? Good!

When your land claim is approved, you are officially capable of representing your state in the government!

---

House of Representatives
All citizens with land claims are eligible to join the House of Representatives. The House, also known as Congress, is the legislative body of our regional government. Anyone may apply to join it before the start of each congressional session, which last for two months per term. This gives citizens a direct say in our government and allows for a more true and direct democracy.

It is not mandatory that you join the House of Representatives, however it is strongly encouraged that you do so. If you would like to join the House of Representatives, you can do so by applying to join here. Remember, you can only join before the start of each session. Once a session has begun, you cannot apply to join, so make sure you apply when prompted!

If you do not want to be a part of the House of Representatives, but still wish to give your opinion on bills currently being debated, you can visit the Public Gallery. This is for both members and non-members of congress to debate and give opinions on bills in House. However, no official lawmaking or legislation is conducted here. It is simply a public floor for discussion of law.

---

Elections
Whether you are looking to run for office, or just wanting to register to vote, all the information for election related material can be found at the Polling Station.

Threads for registering for office will be posted and announced for each election period, and will be dated accordingly to save from confusion. You will only have to register to vote once, and can do so by going here.

---

Political Parties
Want to increase your odds of achieving office with the support of like-minded political allies? Or just want to spread your views into the region to help influence your politics? Then start or join a political party! We would assume that in playing NationStates, one would already know the point and practicies of political parties, so we'll save from expanding on the specific topic of parties.

If you would like to join or create your own party, simple go here.

---

Regional Role Play
A big part of this region is it's incorporated role play. It takes the combined use of the regional map, regional law, and states in the region to create a diverse alternate reality. The regional role play allows citizens to interact with one another and their states, gaining more land, going to war, establishing trade and commerce, and all around expanding the opportunities of being in the region.

All laws passed by the region government take effect on the role play, and are used as tools of law to dictate the path of the game.

The regional role play is set in the Antebellum period (1820-1860). This means that all technology, military, economics, and other systems are based within this time frame.

You can learn more about the regional role play, and join up by going here

Well, that is all for now in the Beginner's Guide. As we expand, so will this. So please check back often to see any revisions! Hope it helps, enjoy the region!
