One thing that makes me feel a bit let down is that GW2 will kind of eliminate creative building. I enjoyed using profession mixes in unexpected ways in GW1. In GW2, with the different way skills work, an individual build just won't have that many options. It seems like it will be more about team build combos. It will become more about mixing the skills of two or more players to create combo effects.

In GW1, I was probably one of the first to champion using a Ranger's expertise energy savings to chain assassin and warrior skills. And a Ranger's expertise defense skills made a melee character very hard to hit--until the skills were nerfed. There was fun to be had exploring what could be done with a Necro's energy gathering on a non-necro character. A Mesmer's speed. An Ele's high energy made many give up the monk's Divine bonus just for a bigger pool of go-juice.

You won't have a lot of that kind of experimenting in GW2, and I'm going to miss it.

I think you will still have a lot of experimenting with skills in GW2, yes maybe not as much as in GW but it wont allow you to make stupid builds either. This will be mainly through Traits. Consider the fact that you have the ability to use different weapons which give you different skills. Along with profession, weapon and skill selections, the trait system allows players to further customize their characters to suit their style of play, or to create specialist builds.

A character has access to five profession-specific trait lines. Each point spent increases two attributes. They are:
Primary/profession-specific attributes

Power +10 — increases damage dealt.
Precision +10 — increases critical hit chance.
Toughness +10 — increases armor.
Vitality +10 — increases health.
Intelligence +2 — decrease recharge of attunements; specific for Elementalists all other Profession-specific attributes +1 — see trait lines by profession below.

Secondary attributes

Boon Duration +1% — increases boon duration.
Condition Damage +10 — increases condition damage.
Condition Duration +1% — increases condition duration.
Critical Damage +1% — increases critical hit damage.
Healing Power +10 — increases healing.

Traits will provide passive combat benefits that are continuous to characters by adding additional effects to skills and other combat abilities. Each profession has access to 15 minor and 60 major traits across five different trait lines.

So by adding points to different Trait lines will give you numerous different outcomes from your skills. Check individual profession trait lines... you'll be amazed.

I havn't posted any builds yet myself. Was purely waiting to see and make sure no more major changes are going to happen. Once the system is more settled then I will be gladly posting builds.

It makes me wonder just how many points you get total, and what are the conditions for swapping them out.

This is just one of those things where I'm going to have to spend time actually using it. I think there will be a lot of things like that. Reading about it is fun, but I'll actually have to mess with it. I assume that nothing is irreversible. I used to hate games that locked you into bad choices.

You acquire their first trait point at level 11 and earn 1 additional point with each new level, up to a maximum of 70 trait points at level 80.

Spending trait points can be done at any time. In PvE and WvW, however, resetting trait points has to be done by
Using a Training Manual which you can attain the first after Lvl 11 which is the Adepts Training Manual at the cost of 10 Silver coins which allows you to spend 10 points in each Trait line,
Lvl 40 which is the Master's Training Guide at the cost of 1 Gold Coin that allows you to spend 20 points in each trait line ,
Lvl 60 which is the Grandmasters Training guide at the cost of 2 Gold Coins that allows you to spend 30 points in each trait line,
or Paying 71 Bronze coin/point to a trainer (at L80, this could cost 49 Silver coin 70 Bronze coin).
