The Hero We Deserve

I have a love/hate relationship with BoS. Partly, it has to do with the fact that, like most anthologies, the stories are a mixed bag. But mostly, it's the handling of violence and the way it is framed and executed. Let's take "Mire", my least favorite chapter, for instance. Mire At this point, I wasn't terrified. Just grossed out. It's important to note the distinction between the two: Disgust is a part of horror. along with the fear and shock, and they work in tandem with each other. Fear starts by introducing the danger, and the cost (i.e. the mortality of characters). Shock is then generated when the characters encounter that danger and experience loss, and disgust is usually a byproduct from witnessing the event. This is then followed by fear again, accompanied by the momentary absence of danger. In the case of Mire, it's all disgusting, and as a consequence, misses out on fear, and lacks the shock factor as well. It's only a question of which gross thing is going to happen next, and to what degree. I'd also like to bring up the last point in the "Mire" section, because EVERYONE in the game does this. They all narrate every grisly detail of their own deaths in slow, lurid detail, whole paragraphs dedicated to capturing every angle, and it all just gets so tiresome. People never just just die. They soliloquy, and chew the cud about the particular angle of the weapon, the moment of penetration, the number of fractures made, and in what places. And some of the Wrong ends are pointlessly nasty. Such as the one in "Encounter" (one of my favorite chapters actually), where having Yui pray on her her lucky pencil results in falling and impaling herself in the neck with it. The writers literally have to go out of their way to write that one in. I guess you could make the argument that it's the curse of HH that allows the characters to be aware enough before they die (although that's a stretch with Encounter), or in a few cases, it's a ghost narrating the death they've had to experience a thousand times over. It's also possibly due to the fact that it's a visual novel. It's still ridiculous. Grindhouse (or Team Gris Gris) are generally not very subtle about their writing, which has it's own charm. Just look at the titles: Blood Covered, Dead Patient, Blood Drive. They all sound like the titles to lurid, sensational, exploitative schlock -"Grindhouse films" of which I'm judging Kedouin is a fan of. He and his team tend to lay everything bare with their writing. Every emotion, every sensation, every thought. Even if it's just text, not a lot is left to the imagination. Not really. This can lead to genuinely powerful moments. Some of my favorite moments in BoS Now, I'm not opposed to violence and gore; with BC, and before that, the old PC-98 game, I felt like Kedouin and his creative time knew when to pull back. I know this sounds mostly like a rant that belongs in the BoS section, but I'm also worried about Blood Drive, and the writing for the future of the series. See, the problem with disgust is, if you're not careful, you end up with your only option being to escalate that violence and get more and more gross. And that becomes incredibly boring. This is ultimately just my opinion. So I was wondering what you lovely people think about the state of the series? Edited by Patra, July 18, 2014, 11:00 am.

We have to remember though that BoS only has Kedwin supervising the writing. This is actually more of 5pb or MAGES as the writers of the scenario. If you'd look at the end of the chapters, you'd see at least one writer that is not Kedwin. I think aside from BloodDrive, Kedwin just took the job of looking over the writing. Another thing to note is Kedwin's personal proclamation of Corpse Party being eroguro/erotic gore. Not really extreme as we've seen, but he indeed depicts CP as such. About the extreme amount of textual details, it may be variable on players, but I personally love it. I'm not much a fan of visual horror/gore, so I really soak in the vivid images I get through text. The rawness of their text really gets to me. Additionally, I take the extremely detailed narration of death as kinda exclusive for us. Kinda like, in their narration to us, it has so much detail, but if you think things in their way, they possibly just think of the pain plainly. I want to think of this as the reason since CP always had been limiting themselves in visuals and greatly compensates through text. So, basically, unless the writing's gonna be more of 5pb/MAGES' job and Kedwin assists, which is unlikely, I think we'll be just fine with BloodDrive. Edited by Skybird, July 18, 2014, 6:47 am.

You're right about the different writers. I didn't want to make it seem like I was putting everything on Kedouin (although the pee fixation seems like his input...). And I'm also relieved (in a way) the the creator's stance on his series is that it's eroguro, since I didn't want to start a shitstorm by throwing out that term. You succinctly put it that they write very plainly. That's probably what drew me to the series; the writing is very bald-faced, and no-holds-barred. So it's difficult to say that the writing is objectively bad when it's not only what they want it to be, but appropriate for the kind of genre they're apart of as well. I'm more of a "use violence and gore sparingly" kind of guy, so it surprised me that I actually liked CP. I think ultimately it's a balancing act for me, and as long there's enough variety in the scenarios and the gameplay, I'll be fine. I did like Dead Patient, and that's a continuation of the series as well! |

Of course though, none of us actually do think of CP as eroguro. I mean, what sort of madman would you have to be to see the pure beauty of the destroyed vessel of life. Someone who has never done anything like that. |

Well, I think Kedwin sees CP as eroguro due to some ecchi-ness of scenes despite the horror nature of the game. While not too extreme, BoS pushes this with the textual descriptions. Also, Musume. And yeah, it's Kedwin's idea for the "pee" matter. Another work of Kedwin, Doll's Fall, certain has its own kinks. (The panty sniffing of that one girl in the latest chapter though...) I could see it being envisioned by Kedwin as eroguro due to the pervertedness along with the gore. Lastly, I don't think of eroguro as taking pleasure from seeing death, gore, etc. I see it more of just horror/gore/etc present alongside ecchi or the stronger kind of it. And CP does show those in its medias. |

Well, the point stands that none of us, hopefully, do find Corpse Party as any kind of porn. Sorry I misunderstood the definition of eroguro, but I understandably don't really want to do much research on it. Morishige. |

No problem. Its name is kinda deceiving, being a mix of eroticism and guro. I haven't searched much either, but that's just how I vision it. And well, like how there's the thing called "scenery porn", I guess you could say that I view CP as an astounding material for gore. I really fell in-love with the descriptions in-game. They're not visual, but they still give such vivid imaginations, which I think is worse than actually seeing the horror. |

I get what you mean Morishige (about us not actually viewing it as porn). And that bolded point up there is actually a lot of what eroguro is about. somewhat NSFW text, sensitive subject matter, long-ass paragraphs Sorry if that made anybody throw up a little. I personally stuck with three or so links while I was researching the topic for my own peace of mind. Edited by Patra, July 19, 2014, 4:21 pm.
