Ooue, Sayaka![]() (Art from Dom with permission) 大上さやか(おおうえ さやか) Age: 17 Height: 163cm (5’4”) Weight: 46.3kg (102lb) Birthdate: August 29, 1991 Blood Type: A Student Life: “Good evening, everyone! Ooue Sayaka’s “Love Braver!”’s kicking it off tonight again too! Yaaaaaaay!” (Book of Shadows, Love Braver introduction) A model, TV, and radio host personality, Sayaka is a pretty famous girl. She hosts the radio program, “Ooue Sayaka’s Love Braver”. The show is 30 minutes long, and has a variety style structure, possessing a weekly “I always wanted to do…” corner. The “I always wanted to do…” corner is audience interactive, where fans are allowed to submit a certain topic or activity for Sayaka to try out. In other words, Sayaka’s radio show possesses a modular section to it, allowing it a great degree of freedom to its direction. She could be doing a movie review, literary commentary, interview with another person, or ghost story telling depending on what her audience wants. (According to several community radio host forums, this is bad form as every radio show is meant to have a direction which drives the commentary. i.e. there is a certain focus that the commentary and content is based around, which gives context to the selection of anecdotes and commentary the host delivers. This is how the radio show gains a following and a fan base. As Sayaka’s show doesn’t function like that, it is possible that its direction is Sayaka herself. This isn’t too odd, as several idols and TV personalities in Japan have blogs and channels where they talk about things around them. Sayaka’s unique radio program structure is slightly similar to this. This reflects the slightly different style that Japanese media and entertainment culture revolves around compared to Western shows. Many TV programs and talk shows often follow the “Variety” style, which died out in the 1980s in America. This format faded from mainstream American television largely due to the presence of multi-channel television, which allowed viewers to access a variety of topics by switching channels, instead of having TV programs cater to a variety of audiences. With the national switch from analogue to digital broad cast services in 2011, this media culture may change in Japan as well.) Her friendship with Mio Yuzuki began in part due to her status as a model, as Mio was a fan. “Let’s go in with gusto, shall we? Oh yeah, that’s right! Today, I went to school, to see my friends! It was the first break I had in a while! I talked for so long, like we talked aaaaa lot! Ah, and I went to study… mmmh Hehe… Hmm? The audio team’s laughing for some reason. Why?! … Huh? ‘The thought of Ooue going to school is funny.’? Nooo! I go! Of course I go! I’m a highschooler just like everyone else! D-D-Don’t laugh! I know you are! Ahh! Don’t hide it! Stop acting fake with me! *sigh Urrrgh. This is so weird. I wanted to say that school’s good too, so why’d it turn out like this? Well, whatever. Please stick us with for tonight’s 30 minutes! Braver!” (Book of Shadows, Love Braver Sayaka’s opening comments) She is quite devoted to her work, with her producers and other members of the radio program joking that they’re surprised by the fact that Sayaka even attends school at all. In fact, her attendance record is quite sketchy, and her grades are hinted to be not very good by her own admission. Her after school schedule is also dominated by her work, although what time she has left she spends mostly with Naho. Naho and Sayaka’s favorite place at school is the roof top, where both often climb over the fence in order to sit on the ledge to eat lunch. Besides her work, she also assists Naho in her spiritual investigations. Although she herself has no spiritual abilities, her large reservoir of spiritual energy can be used to fuel Naho’s spells whose unique physiology allows her to take the spiritual energy of those she touches in exchange for exposing her emotions to them. Personality: Energetic, kind, and a hard worker, Sayaka is a positive force in most social interactions. Sayaka: “Naho-chan, you can’t! Naho: ”Eh?“ Sayaka: "You see, this girl… she’s had it rough.” Sayaka: “Apparently, while she was on her way home, after she’d just bought a famous dessert she’d been looking forward for a long time, she got caught in a car accident because someone fell asleep at the wheel.” Sayaka: “Since then, she’s been wanting to eat tasty sweeties so much so that she can’t move on.” Sayaka: “She has so little power, so she couldn’t possess anyone for the longest time, and the person she finally manage to stick to after trying her hardest was me.” Naho: “Don’t tell me… are you pitying her? You can’t do that, Sayaka, you should never open your heart to–” Sayaka: “But, Naho-chan, you understand if you’re a girl too, right?” Sayaka: “Even though she finally got the dessert she’d waited soooo long for, she couldn’t eat it. That’s just not right, right?” Naho: “Well, that’s not… totally unrelatable, but…” Sayaka: “You see? That’s why I thought, 'I have to keep on eating sweets until this girl’s satisfied.” (Corpse Party: Blood Drive Ex Chapter 4) Her kindness can occasionally get her into trouble, as evil spirits are known to use openings in a person’s heart to possess them. Aiko: “There were some extra things, like the low level spirit, and being jerked around by Magari-san… But, this was the first time I’ve ever had tea and spent time with people I’m close to after school. Sayaka: “Eh…… Aiko-san, you’ve never spent your time after school like this before?” Aiko: "Yes, that’s right.” Sayaka: “But, Aiko-san… you’re such a pretty girl, so why?” Naho: Aiko chuckles at the way Sayaka phrases her question. Naho: Even I don’t really get the correlation between how pretty you are and the way you spend time after school. Naho: … I guess, inside of Sayaka, it’s the norm for pretty girls to go out and have tea with friends after school. Aiko: “I am usually busy with gathering information. I don’t even have the opportunity to play like this after school in the first place.” Aiko: “On top of that, I don’t even feel like going out of my way to associate with normal people who can’t even see spirits.” Sayaka: “Eeh?” Naho: Sayaka freezes in place, apparently extremely shocked. Naho: Aiko herself, completely unfazed, is tilting her head questioningly. Aiko: “… ? Oh? Did I say something that strange?” Sayaka: “… uh… I understand, Aiko-san. From today onwards, we are friends!” (Corpse Party: Blood Drive Ex Chapter 4) Sayaka has a sort of materialistic view of the world. As seen above, she has difficulty understanding why Aiko, who she sees as beautiful, does not spend time with friends even when Aiko explains her reasons. This stems mostly from Sayaka’s own childhood. Sayaka: “Yesterday, I finally became friends with Naho-chan… and I thought, 'I finally have someone to give this to.’” Sayaka: “You see, this is the 'Sand of the Stars’ that I’ve held onto ever since I was a child.” Sayaka: “Back when I was just a friendless bumpkin, I saw it on sale as a souvenir from Rinkai Academy. I bough it to show off, but…” Sayaka: “They say that if you buy this and give it to your best friend, you’ll be able to stay friends for ever with that kid.” Sayaka: “I had it stored away until I made a real friend. The person I give this to is someone I can think I like from the bottom of my heart.” (Corpse Party CEMETERY 0: The Genesis of Ars Moriendi File#09 Consideration) When she was little, Sayaka was an unpopular girl who was often isolated and had no true friends. (As a child, she is drawn with glasses, and two braids.) She believes that the reason for that was her physical appearance. By changing her appearance, Sayaka became more popular, and gained more friends. However, this has left her with an ingrained belief that physical attractiveness must equate with social popularity. This belief is so ingrained that Aiko’s social status shocks her heavily. This belief, however, does not mean she views people who are less attractive as less human than her as she often risks her safety when helping other people during Naho’s spiritual investigations. She is also against bullying due to this past. (Her high levels of spiritual energy, and lack of ability to use it is also explained by this. Spiritual energy is described as the currency of fate, and those possessing it naturally are often born with the ability to use it to some degree. Sayaka, however, does not even possess basic spiritual sensitivity. Thus, her spiritual energy levels are not natural, but the product of either training or spiritual surgery. To train spiritual energy, one must fight against fate. Fighting one’s fate is defined as the changing of an outcome set by past events. i.e. to proceed along the path of greatest resistance. Sayaka changed both her personality, and her physical appearance in order to become more popular. It is possible she gained her spiritual energy levels from the years she spent fighting against who she was to become who she is.) Relationships: She is friendly with virtually every other character she meets except Inumaru. Her greatest friendship is with Naho, who she has risked life and limb in the past to save. Sayaka: "Naho-chan, open the cupboard in the living room with this key, please. There's... a single coffin... After that, please, find another coffin, and get out of here with Mochida-kun, together..." Satoshi: "Ooue-san..." Sayaka: "I'm sorry, Mochida-kun. I wanted to save at least Naho-chan, so I couldn't tell you about this coffin..." Narrator: Naho picks up Sayaka's doll, and her shriveled up form and holds them to her chest. (Corpse Party: Book of Shadows Drama CD - Project DOLLIES) She sacrificed herself during in order to ensure Naho could survive, and has come to Naho’s rescue during Corpse Party CEMETERY 0 as well. Akari: “I’ve also heard about you, Sayaka-san from Naho-san. I never knew you were so beautiful…” Sayaka: “For real? Seriously? That’s kinda embarrassing. Can I get your e-mail address?” Naho: “Hey, hey, don’t try to hit on her.” (Corpse Party CEMETERY 0: The Genesis of Ars Moriendi File#08 Transfer Student) She is extremely interested in 'pretty girls’, which often leads to her either hitting up or molesting some of the female cast of Corpse Party. Her mother is supportive of her, and her career. In one possibility during her travels through Heavenly Host, she keeps the chocolate her mother gave her as a symbol of her bond with her. Sayaka: HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY!! Ayumi: ?! … … Who is that? Narrator: Suddenly, a girl with a hairpin a peculiar shade of green stood before Inumaru’s eyes. Narrator: Looking closer, her body glowed white, and appeared transparent… Sayaka: You stupid dog! What’re you doing! Inumaru: Gwarrrrrrr…! Aiko: … Sa… yaka…? Narrator: Rampaging, Inumaru doesn’t react to Sayaka’s words. Sayaka: Following me aaaaaaaall the way to a place like this! Do you even have a brain? You’re really stupid! Seriously stupid! Stupid dog! Inumaru: Grr… …. Narrator: Inumaru’s movements stop. Inumaru: You’re a stupid dog! Turning into something like that Narrator: Sayaka’s tone begins to merge with tears. Narrator: At the same time, with every “Stupid Dog” she say… a tear spills out of Inumaru’s eyes. Sayaka: Just how many times do I need to tell you… there’s a more suitable woman for you out there! You stupid dog! Sayaka: … … … … Narrator: Inumaru’s tears overflow, one after the other endlessly. Inumaru: Grrr… …! Sayaka: You’re really… … Stupid… … Sayaka: Rnnnng… …ugh!Aghaaaaa… …! … …All this, no one’s to blame for it you know! Sayaka: There’s no way to predict this! Forgive Aiko! Understand? Narrator: Crying, Sayaka beseeches him. Narrator: Inumaru releases Aiko’s neck from his mouth, and becomes quiet. (Corpse Party: Blood Drive) Inumaru is a childhood acquaintance, who she rejects rather harshly. However, part of this may be due to how she views herself. Her reference to the existence of a more suitable woman for Inuamru may suggest she does not see herself as deserving of Inumaru's feelings, possibly because of the way she changed herself to be more popular. Inumaru is the only one who has remained with Sayaka even when she was unpopular by her own description. Thus, he is in a way a reminder of who Sayaka was even before she had changed herself. The fact that he accepts both would be irritating to Sayaka, as she herself rejected her past self in order to become her present self. The thought that someone could like her past self negates the purpose of becoming a 'pretty girl' as it was the belief that it was because she was a 'bumpkin' that she was friendless and unpopular. Abilities: Humongous Spiritual Energy Capacity
Naho: I don’t know whether it’s because of her massive spiritual energy Naho: But, anyways, all of Sayaka's body fluids, since I lose a lot of spiritual energy, seem really tasty to me... (Corpse Party CEMETERY 0: The Genesis of Ars Moriendi File#01 Urban Legend) Sayaka has an unusually large capacity of spiritual energy that makes her a prime target for many evil spirits. Because of this, most of her body fluids seem to be extremely appealing to individuals who are either depleted of or regularly run out of spiritual energy. Naho can utilize her own spiritual ability to use some of Sayaka's spiritual energy by touching her, allowing her to cast higher level spiritual charms. Magari: "... if it's about spiritual energy, It might not be as much as that girl, but quite a lot spills out, you know? From me." (Corpse Party CEMETERY 0: The Genesis of Ars Moriendi File#09 Consideration) When Magari is trying to break Sayaka's and Naho's friendship, she comments that she does not leak as much spiritual energy as Sayaka, but that could be a lie. It could also be true if she simply didn't leak as much spiritual energy as Sayaka, due to her having better control of it. Regardless, Sayaka does not possess any control of her spiritual energy, nor does she have any spiritual abilities. Edited by Zaion, May 8, 2016, 8:40 pm.
