Nah, that's fine actually. It's called devotion and it's so enviable to be honest. I'd like to be more like him in that sense, I just can't focus on what I'm translating sometimes and that makes me accidentally leave some details behind. Plus, what the heck, I prefer the more accurate translation as well, though I'm kind of against translator notes (people usually don't read those, judging from experience). Nah, you didn't. It's all good, haha. All I said anyway is that, in my opinion, Tom hasn't messed up with the translations too much (hell, he's done a good job from my point of view! If we don't count the "Butter up my pooper" line. Seiko deserved better than to be remembered for that one quote OTL) and, we have to keep in mind that there are editors as well, so they may be the ones behind the "lack" of details or the translations being changed for easier understanding (=^^=) Edited by L3Z4, June 24, 2015, 10:17 pm.

It's just the number of times where I heard something strange in Japanese that I didn't understand, but knew the English was wrong. A simple google search for half an hour finds you the correct term. The number of nouns he replaced with completely different ones was headache inspiring. It felt like he didn't bother trying to find the word, and made up a sentence that sounded spooky. You can't replace the name "Kairai period" with "waves of energy" XP. (Kairai period: An obsolete Buddhist practice born from of a story of a noble man buried with his still living four servants. The fourth servant returned to life, four days after his death, bringing news of his master to the mourning wife and daughters. The master was chained to a burning rock in hell and tormented by demons for his sins. However, on the 3rd day he vanished from the rock and the servant was returned to the world of the living to bring back this news. The wife had prayed for three days straight for the salvation of her husbands soul, and in return his soul was released from hell. The Kairai period is a 3 day period of intense mourning done by the family based off of this legend, where the family prays for the soul of the deceased. It has been currently merged with the 7 days of mourning and many Buddhist funerals no longer include it. However, in Book of Shadows a disembodied voice calls to the player about how the waves of the Kairai would burn the soul. This was translated to "Waves of energy would burn the soul." Even if "Kairai" (which is a noun) was too hard for people to understand "punishment" or "torture" would be a much better translation. It literally feels as if they just put in whatever they thought would sound cool, and didn't bother trying to find what the word actually meant. This isn't even taking into account the complete mess that ended up being the rest of the disembodied voice. This is why I hate XSEED's translations. It's not that they're bad. It looks as if they didn't even bother to try to translate the text. |

The only thing I asked of XSEED in their marketing of Blood Drive was to shy away from spoiling the game unnecessarily and to refrain from showcasing the 2nd OP sequence at all. So, of course, the first thing they do is precisely that. It's very discouraging. Thankfully I think that, for the most part, its significance hasn't registered with people who haven't played the game due to how quickly scenes flash by but it's still discouraging that it's out there at all. It's one of the most impactful sequences of the game to experience first-hand and there is no excuse to ruin it for people who've been following the series since Blood Covered Repeated Fear and have yet to spoil the events of Blood Drive for themselves. |
