No, I was just reacting to how you were including me and everyone else reading the post in your sentiment since you said "we". >u> Anyways, I guess that sort of social relativity can make you think about things. I was once grabbed onto by a beggar and had to give him a pound to get him to let me go (to make this absolutely clear, I wasn't in a back alley or even run down. I was going down the main road in Edinburgh when a man dressed in rags grabbed my arm and started pouring out his life story about how he was homeless and poor. His clothes were in a bad state, but he was clearly not starving or dehydrated. Also, anyone who can talk for that long does not suffer from malnutrition.). As I was going home, I wondered if I was being too nice or was just a pussy, and why this sort of aggressive begging didn't happen more often. Then, I realized that the fact that there are assholes who kick and spit on people like the person who grabbed onto me make it risky to do things like that. (I guess most other people would try to throw them off or push them away, but the thought of physical violence just doesn't go through my head when I'm in a position to dish it out.) I guess everyone has their role in society, even the scum. It's probably more than that (more like definitely more than that e.g. personal pride, common decency, etc.) though, but the fact that nasty people who use violence exist does help me out in a sense. The possibility that I could be someone like that introduces a risk for anyone to try and approach me. Thus, I'm not constantly harassed by people who need a pound for the bus, a phone call, to feed their baby, etc. Your thought is probably more a question, while mine is more a conclusion. Still, I get where you're coming from. Although, logically speaking, it's more a combination of; timing, climate, coincidence, and social climate. Saying it's a "sense of emptiness" is probably taking it a bit too far. Sorry if I've taken it too extremes, but I've just seen too many books and novels that use that phrase to make the MC or person seem outside of society and odd that it just feels like writer shorthand for saying, "This guy is a loner, see how alone he is." when there are so many other ways to do it e.g. The Outside (a.k.a. The Stranger) by Camus is all about a man who's outside of society and cannot understand other human beings even though he looks normal. He doesn't think like them and doesn't understand them, but he lives with them and even is seen as a friend by some. Again, sorry if this looks like a rant, but that phrase just makes me think "wannabee Albert Camus/Mysterious/Suspense/Contemporary Author". i.e. it's a trash expression. The emptiness is best portrayed through its effects, not by saying something is empty. It's like saying "he looked through the empty air at the sunset." Words for words sake. |

Yeah. Your thoughts are pretty much reading too much into my quickly-formed statement. Not that it's actually bad or wrong.  In my thoughts, subjects of being outside society isn't even an intent that crossed my mind, but people can have their own interpretations. For me, this is actually just humorous and without those heavier themes.
