Okay, honestly, this is a topic that I'd wanted to start some time ago but just never did. Now's the time.
Let's talk about books, comics and manga! I was going to say visual novels too, but let's leave those out for now.
Obviously a lot of people are going to have a lot of different tastes, so not every book that someone talks about or mentions is going to be for you. But hopefully people can learn about novels, manga, comics or authors that they've never heard of before through this topic and maybe find something that they can enjoy!
So... Feel free to talk about your favorites, things you hope to read in the future and hopefully not to much, books that you hate.

Since I started this...

Favorite Authors:
1) F. Scott Fitzgerald
2) Haruki Murakami
3) Neil Gaiman
4) Otsuichi
5) Milk Morinaga

Favorite Novels:
1) The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
2) South of the Border, West of the Sun by Haruki Muramaki
3) Goth by Otsuichi
4) Pages For You by Sylvia Brownrigg
5) Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata

I don't particularly have any favorite manga at this point, mostly because I've read so much that my brain may explode if I try to think about it. However, my favorite mangaka, Milk Morinaga is #5 on my favorite authors list. A lot of her manga is very cute or moe GL (girls love).
About half of her manga has been published in Comic High!, which is a male demographic magazine. She has however published in Tsubomi (defunct now) and Comic Yuri Hime, which are GL magazines. A few of her works are also H-manga (Mare for example).
Two of her series' have been licensed by Seven Seas (Girlfriends and Kisses, Sighs and Cherry Blossom Pink). Kisses, Sighs and Cherry Blossom Pink isn't out at this time in English.

This post is a little bare bones right now (except for the spiel on Milk Morinaga *facepalm*) but I do plan on going through the author and novel list and talking more about each one.

Eep! :D These books I've read are excellent, all-time favorites!

Heather Brewer:

She is most famous for a certain vampire series. NO, NOT TWILIGHT. It's called The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod. Too sum up 5 books very quickly, it's about a half-breed vampire that was born from a human mother. That makes him the first of his kind. Elysia (the vampire society) tries to capture him to get to his father (who is wanted for the crime of falling for a human, and also presumed dead) and stop him from fulfilling a prophecy where he rules over all vampires and enslaves all the humans.

There is a spin-off series too, focusing on the cousin of his best friend. That cousin, and friend to Vlad, turned out to be a vampire slayer. The Slayer Chronicles. Since the stories of Vlad cover all the school years, the books on Joss take place during the summers in between. So, even though she wrote all the Vlad books and are currently writing the Slayer books, they can be seen as both individual series and two series that work together to create one story.

So, chronologically, the titles are:

8th Grade Bites (VT)
First Kill (SC)
9th Grade Slays (VT)
Second Chance (SC)
10th Grade Bleeds (VT)
Third Strike (SC - - yet to be released)
11th Grade Burns
?????
12th Grade Kills
?????

She is also writing a series called The Legacy of Tril. Only the first book, "Soulbound", is released, the sequel "Soulbroken" in the making. It's about a girl that was forced off into a type of military school with the heads using her parents' lives as leverage. There, each person has a partner, a barron (fighter) to a healer. The girl, Kaya, was born a healer, but, if she's going to be in this war, she wants to fight. So, she secretly sneaks off and learns to fight as a barron. A kind of "Mulan" storyline with the first book. Not sure what to expect in the next one. There is also a love triangle between her, her partner, and the boy that teaches her to fight. But, it's not romance centered. A lot of monster/katana fighting.

Barry Lyga

I seem to just enjoy a lot of his books in general. He is not afraid to push social issues and controversy. I admit, I mainly follow him for his kid-friendly superhero series Archvillian, but that's just me being kinda weird. He has a lot of other books worth checking out.

The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl and its sequel Goth Girl Rises chronicles the lives of an emotional but still very hardcore teenage girl and her friendship with an amateur comic book artist/writer. It really digs into the lives of their youth and just the goth girl's mental state always keeps things interesting.

I Hunt Killers was a book that was recently released. Pretty much, a boy whose father is the most famous serial killer ever notices that someone is mimicking his dad's crimes. Since he's wrestling with his own morality, he takes it upon himself to hunt down the new killer. It's the start of a new series, apparently, but so far only one book is out. The sequel, Game comes out in April.

Hero Type is a book with more of a political statement. A boy with a secret which I shall not spoil saves a girl's life and is deemed the town hero. Thing is he is then socially exiled for removing a bumper sticker from his car that supports the troops. (He did so under his dad's orders). The book is really more of a statement on personal freedoms and mindless things we do to follow our country which are truly meaningless. It shows that a person can be patriotic to their country without decking out their space with stars and stripes everywhere. :)

So...those are my favorite books. ;) Well, I guess I could add the Grimms Fairy Tale, Sherlock Holmes, and Edgar Allan Poe collection to the list (I really am a fan) but I'm going to stick to pop culture novels for now.

Mm.. let's see.

Ghostgirl used to be my favorite as a youngling. It always tickled my romantic side and always tugged at my heartstrings.
The Accidental Time Machine was good too, but the ending really really sucked.

As for manga, I've only read Blood Covered, a little bit of Musume (never again), and Another Child.

I'm not a constant reader, so...

Oh yeah, I read Ghostgirl too! :D I want to read the Xmas novella that was released, but it's only available on the Kindle...

And since you also read Ghostgirl, would you like to see his fan video I made with my class? I showed it on the YouTube thread, but I think here it's more relevant actually. (Plus, since it is my latest video creation, I can't help but show it off)

Pretty good. It'd be better if it had more video than pictures though.

Ah, well it was for a school project. ^_^; The entire point of the assignment was sort of telling a story through stop motion, so....

Hey. Can we talk about fanfiction here? :D
I haven't read any of those books you mentioned. In fact, I hated reading as a kid. I started reading because of a video game. XD

I stopped reading BC because... Well... The story is close to the same. I read Musume all the way to the end. The end was kind of rage worthy. Another Child is good.

Fanfiction... I guess? I don't read much fanfiction so it's a grey area to me. But, go for it?

For this post I'm going to just go through two books and an author.

Otsuichi: Otsuichi is a Japanese horror author, who mostly writes short stories. At least one of his works (Goth) has won one an award (in Japan). His stories have been made adapted as manga, TV dramas and movies; and few of these have been released in English. He also wrote a novelization of the fourth arc of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (a manga series). His stories are often very vivid and descriptive.

Goth: Goth is an oddity for me. I happened to be in Japan at the time, in a used book store, just looking around. I didn't have anything in mind to buy, but I wanted to buy manga at the time. I happened to see the spine of the manga adaptation of Goth and intrigued by the title and the art, purchased it. The art is amazing, so why not pick it up, just for something beautiful and slightly horrific to look at?
After some time went buy, I looked into what this actually was because aside from the art, I had no idea what it was even about. It turned out that it was adapted from a novel. So, I spent time looking for the novel and happened to find the Yoru no Shō and Boku no Shō volumes. Around the same time that I found out that it was based on a novel, I found out that the novel and manga had been published by TokyoPop (defunct).
Fast forward a few years and I'm back in America, looking to try and get this novel and manga that I only owned in Japanese. I found both and... Fell absolutely in love.
Goth isn't exactly a horror novel. Don't get me wrong, it is, but there's a lot more to it than that. It's also a mystery novel; wrapped up in grotesque descriptions of the events that occur. Boku/Itsuki Kamiyama drew me in as being a protagonist completely devoid of feelings. That's probably odd to say, but him being devoid of feelings leaves him able to describe the things that he observes objectively. Yoru Morino (who actually has an altogether different name appears to be the same as Boku, but as time passes and the reader is able to better get to know her, the exact opposite is revealed. She feels things, but doesn't know how to express them. She's a character wrapped in mystery, with her own dark past hidden underneath a calm facade.
It's not a book for the faint of heart. But if you can stomach Corpse Party, you can probably stomach this. It's just as descriptive and just as gruesome. But it's a book I can't not read, I do that once a year.

Pages For You by Sylvia Brownrigg: This novel I happened to come across basically by random. How I'm not going to say, because it's kind of embarrassing. I was drawn in, again by the characters and the descriptiveness of the novel. Each chapter (if they can even be called that), is short. About a two pages usually. The story is fairly simple, but the main characters and their interactions are what truly make up the story. What is the story though? Well, it's a love story. For the character telling the story, it's about her first love. Unlike a lot of stories about first love, she falls in love with a woman who happens to be not only her senior, but a TA at the college she attends. This was a novel I didn't want to put down at all after I had started it, I've not even big on love being the primary focus of the story. This just happened to grip me that much. I was amazed that the local library had it and before I was even finished with it, I'd bought a used copy of it.
