Rooney is a jackass and can be a handful but I think even SAF and Moyes realize how integral he is to their success. |

Swapping Rooney for Mata while it makes sense, strengthens an area that is a weakness for Chelsea. As a matter of fact, it can be argued that Chelsea' s only weakness is a striker who can score consistently and creates chances for for his teammates. Rooney would be the perfect Mourhino player because of his work rate and aggressiveness on the field. ManU will be crazy to let Rooney go to a direct rival like Chelsea. |

it's madness if Man U are to sell Chelski Roonie. Might as well, gift wrap the entire PL trophy hoisted by a naked Ronnie with a big erection and send it to stamford with all the WAGs having a procession , dancing naked around it ? I know my imagination and the scene I am painting is slightly disturbing......... but you get my drift. They bloody owe it to us , when we sold them RVP and the league crown and not ship him overseas. If you want to sell Roonie , sell it to the Arsenal. Man U are that desperate for 4th......... I suppose it's a desperate roll of dice from Moyes for Mata. Chasing Pogba and Vidal....... Pogba is lost cause. Vidal maybe , but with Pogba bad mouthing them every single day..........I don't think so. Edited by WX_Hitman, Jan 22 2014, 01:47 PM.

I agree and maybe it would have been handing the title to Chelsea but it would have been better for the long term future of the team. If Chelsea don't get Rooney they'll pay 80m for some other top striker in the summer. No one will stop them. And United will be stuck with a player who will only reluctantly stay if the team's tactics are built around him. Mata, on the other hand, would fit perfectly behind RvP in a 4231, and his unselfish creative play would be of more use to United than Rooney's goals. And if they have a proper no.10 they dont' need creativitiy from the wings and can play more "functional" wingers in Valencia and Young or Welbeck who can run up and down the pitch. We sold RvP to United and after a season of rebuilding have managed to get back into the title race, while the team we sold him to are struggling. Selling to your rivals is not always the end of the world. If United were giving us Welbeck or Januzaj or Kagawa or Berbatov in exchange for RvP then it would be a no-brainer. And RvP was actually a model professional while Rooney has always had issues with his fitness and discipline on and off the pitch. United are hanging onto him like the holy grail but they can do much better. |

What are people here smoking asking Moyes to swap Rooney with Mata? Do you really want Moyes to depend on Van Persie's fitness as they chase a top 4 finish? I watched Willian play for Chelsea against Hulla and I just realized that Mata would never play for Chelsea again. The amount of off the ball defensive work he put in was simply unbelievable for an offensive player. I just can't see Mata playing in that way. Chelsea attacks are essentially built from break downs of the opposition play and quick counter attacks. As long as Mata is surplus to requirement, Chelsea have to sell. If the bid they quoted as what United put in is true, I don't think they can reject that because nobody would match that bid. Chelsea didn't exactly put Mata on the shopping window this season and the longer they leave him on the bench. I don't think you can leave a player of that quality on the bench in a World Cup year. |

Well, at this point I wouldn't do it, not in the middle of the season with RvP's fitness questionable. The decision was to be made in the summer. I would have tried to sign another striker to complement RvP and Welbeck (who is a great up and coming striker), and swapped Rooney for Mata. You're right about Chelsea's wingers, though. Against us they worked extremely hard defensively, played almost as wing backs. There's nothing wrong with it, in today's game all 10 players have to defend. And the success Bayern have had is because Hynckes managed to get Ribery, Robben, Muller to do their job defensively. If Mata can't do that then he'll find it difficult to start for a big club. Although if he plays centrally he has to do less running and it would be a better fit for him. |

Looks like it's going through. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/manchester-united/10590820/Juan-Matas-37million-transfer-to-Manchester-United-accepted-by-Chelsea.html Shows what Mourinho thinks about United and Moyes' chances of current and future success. Not rivals anymore. I wouldn't be surprise, however, if Rooney is involved in this deal. Maybe a first refusal on him? Or a release clause? |

Well whatever we are all smoking 50% of it is about to happen. And I give Rooney a short time at United. There's a lot of of push factors there, the perception of SAF being good mates with Moyes, the fact that Rooney isn't enjoying being second fiddle to RVP. The fact that footballer like Rooney like a big move (a huge pay day). I reckon if he's not sold soon he will leave by not renewing his contract. |

Let's qualify that. SAF never had problems unloading troublesome stars when he had the biggest or second biggest transfer budget in the league. But when that fell away SAF had to learn to pander to it. The autobiog reveals an awful lot about this, certain one has to say there was no love lost with Rooney well before the moment of retirement. |
