First of all Bendtner doesnt have a case to make, he is not going to get in the starting lineup and he is not staying beyond this season. He is therefore not fighting for his Arsenal future, this is really his swan song, his Arsenal career is over and has accepted the role as a guy that comes off the bench and gets cup games for Arsenal. I cannot even understand why Arsenal fans are this critical of him, he has done his job off the bench. When he was asked to start in the league, he did okay and scored in the first few minutes effectively winning the game for Arsenal. When he was brought off the bench when we were desperate for a goal, he got the goal and got injured doing so. He was poor in the FA cup but we scored 4 goals, why exactly are fans complaining? In the past he has been a bit deluded that he was a lot better he is as a footballer. However as long as he understands his limitations, he would still get a job in the league and earn decent money. I can easily see Bendtner averaging 15-20 goals in a mid table team and reinventing himself.

As for Arsenal, as long as we are not buying a special player to replace Giroud, the current striking situation at the club while not ideal is probably adequate (we would find out by the end of the season). The other option is to find a player that is better than Bendtner but not as good as Giroud, willing to sit on the bench and play limited minutes and the cup. However I can see why Wenger would be reluctant to do that because that player would become redundant long term. I believe Wenger must be looking at his attack and trying to improve that position with a world class player. He brought Weah to Monaco and he brought Anelka to Arsenal. He replaced him with Henry who went on to be an Arsenal legend and signed Van Persie as long term replacement for Henry. I don't think signing a back up now is the direction Wenger wants to go with this striker position.
Phato, I too have praised and defended Bendtner, but looking forward, a need for an upgrade on him if Arsenal are serious about competing on all three fronts seems essential. There are no more throw away Cup matches as Arsenal enters the final 16, so contributions from the front will be vital for each and every match.

I think you define too narrow of a parameter for a January striker signing. I'm looking for someone definitely better than Bendtner and perhaps even better than Giroud once he starts receiving service from the likes of Ozil, Wilshere and Ramsey. He should have complementary attributes to those of the big Frenchman, perhaps so much so as to be occasionally paired with him. But in no way should a striker be coming to The Emirates not feeling that with this talented group of passers that he can't replace Giroud.

Giroud need a fire below his arse to get to the next level. !!!

Bring on Costa ! Or Walcott and company work their magic on Rooney.
