I'm having a go at the gaffer here. Though I understand that Coventry are far removed from Southampton, Wenger went from a no real DM Friday to two today, and both of those fellas had crap matches. I'm so disgusted with their performances today, that I hardly want to see either of them, let alone both, on the pitch anymore.
It wasn't a tactical move to play Arteta and Flamini, it was a forced selection as Wilshere and Ramsey were both out. No doubt Wilshere would have started over Arteta if he had been fit. Arteta did not look ready out there at all today.
How is it that Wilshere's replacement must be a second DM? There were other options available that would have in no way compromised the team's ability to defend - especially looking at the performance of Arteta and Flamini in hindsight. I never want to see the two of them start a match for The Arsenal again. Never!
Like what options? More attackers.
Back five
DM
Ozil, Cazorla
Podolski/Ox, Giroud, Gnabry
or other combination thereof.

More attackers. Back five DM Ozil, Cazorla Podolski/Ox, Giroud, Gnabry or other combination thereof. See, I don't agree with that either because that's unbalancing the team. You need proper midfielders out there to win back the ball. With that formation we would just end up playing Ozil and Cazorla too deep, and they'd be ineffective in trying to win us possession, and we'd be worse in attack and defence.
I think with what we had, Arteta-Flamini was the right choice, and you'd expect the front 4 to have the quality to create chances. You miss that penetration down the middle but you can make up for it.
A better option may have been Flamini - Ox in the center. That would have been more interesting.

Yes, Trees. Flamini-Ox would have been what I preferred, and what I suggested at halftime.

Yeah, I like that option better as well. Or drop Gnabry back to the midfield if you're afraid of being overrun.
Be honest, do you really want to see this duo again?

I really don't mind the evil Flamini - Arteta axis. United got away with playing Carrick - Jones quite a lot last year, and I think it's a similar duo.
But it hurts us more because we rely on our no.8 to go forward and attack. Flamini in that role just isn't very effective, because he can't join in with the pretty little triangles and drop his shoulder to get past a player. And that can leave Ozil a bit isolated in the middle, or if Cazorla cuts inside to help it leaves us without width.
Our fullbacks were more aggressive in the second half and that made a big difference. For me the game looked set for us to take the 3 points late on, with Arteta perhaps going off for Podolski and the Ox slotting in a deeper position. Flamini fucked it up big time.

Somebody's going to have to explain to me our poor start. It's as if we had no idea how Southampton would approach the game. Adjustments at half time should have done the trick, but I wonder why they were even necessary.
By the way, gunnerwynner remains undefeated and pegged the goal scorers for Arsenal. Would that he had gotten the final score right.
I believe that's bcoz of the tactics we've employed for most part of the season, we sit back first and keep it tidy at the back and then try to nick a goal or two, as soon as I saw flamini and arteta start, I knew what was coming.
As you can see by my most recent post, we're both equally unimpressed with the Flamini-Arteta axis. I guess we're soul brothers now. Pretty soon cats will be sleeping with dogs.
I didn't love the decision to use both either, but it all seemed to work just fine after halftime. The fact we were unable to find that gear earlier implies we were not ready for today's match, regardless of the lineup.

Both were useless as tits on a boar for most of the game, and Flamini punctuated their effort with that reckless, stupid challenge.
