Guys, imagine what Mertesacker must have done to Flamini in the locker room after the game.

I am sure he will never go into a tackle two-footed again.

BTW, just read on twitter that due to traffic issues, we requested to delay kickoff by 15 minutes so the players could have a full warm-up. Lee Mason denied the request.

Not surprised by that, as he didn't give us anything during the match. We had 4 fouls and ended up with 1 yellow and 1 red. Southampton had 11 fouls and got 1 yellow right at the end for dissent.
Terrible referee.

Disappointing result. I pray this isn't the one that comes back to bite us. Hopefully London's lesser lights can do us a favor tomorrow, but I ain't holding my breath.

Amazing that we're looking at such a scary situation in midfield over the next few games. We need Arteta back on form stat. I can excuse his costly performance today because he's a bit old and he's been out a while, but we need him to get to grips with the paces very quickly.
Arteta was terrible overall today, but he was much better once Flamini was off the pitch, whether or not this was coincidental.

Prediction: a year from now Arsenal will be victimized by a similar tackle, one that goes unpunished. Certain people will show up and say "I remember many Gunners defending Flamini's tackle against Southhampton!"

A couple of things, I dont see anything wrong with the starting lineup. I think it was more a question of our approach to the game rather than who we had starting. We were a bit caught between whether to press or sit back and build slowly from the back. In the first half we sat back and allowed Southampton build from the back. It didnt work as Southampton controlled the game and whenever we tried to get the ball forward they put pressure on us. I dont think we were able to string 5 passes together in the first half and Southampton were smart enough to foul our players whenever they couldnt win the ball. In the second half the team decided to press Southampton and prevented them from playing the ball out of the back. They suddenly looked uncomfortable and if you noticed the first goal we scored, a cross came from the left from a full back and the ball was won on the right by another full back. Unfortunately pressing high up has its own drawbacks and the second goal we conceded is the type of goal you are susceptible to when you push high up the pitch. I just wonder if we could possibly have sat back a bit when we got a second but we were really on top at that point and it looked like we were going to get a third.

The second issue is intensity, whether you press or sit back, you have to play with a certain level of sharpness and intensity. As Wenger said it almost looked like we were playing at second gear while Southampton were at 4th gear. I think for the first time it looked like we might need a player or two in this window because we looked tired and off the pace. On a final note, I was a bit dissapointed with our inability to just push up the tempo during the game. It took the team going into the dressing room before the team could respond to the fact that they were a goal down.

Agreed. And not that you suggested it, but I lay no blame whatsoever on him for the result.

We simply cannot play half a match against premier league opposition and expect to get more from it than we did today.

P.S. Living in L.A., I've figured out how to beat traffic problems: Leave earlier.

Extremely disappointing result. Terrible first half. Naivete for the second saints goal after taking the game by the throat. Idiot play by Flamini (hope he got a spittle bath by our team leaders after the final whistle). This could be a game we look back on and point to as "the one"...

I hope he will die in a fiery car crash with body burnt beyond recognition. Maybe only the bald head remains.
