Nice paragraph, this, from Andrew Mangan's recap of the match on Soccernet: "And while it's easily forgotten in the aftermath of a relatively comfortable win, there should be a mention of yet another big save from Wojciech Szczesny, which ensured the Gunners stayed 1-0 up. Not for the first time this season the big Pole made an important stop, this time from a point-blank Cameron Jerome header, and it's another illustration of how crucial it is to have a keeper who wins points, rather than costing them." |

Yes agreed and someone has to knock City's unbeaten home record this season even if it has to be the special qunt. |

Now that they've matured a bit, the Pols in the goal are perhaps the most formidable tandem in the EPL. Edited by JustOneDennisBergkamp, Feb 3 2014, 01:21 PM.

I think Arteta deserves a special mention in this game. I watched the game on replay a few minutes ago and he did the right thing under pressure so many times that it is startling. Here's some stats that justify my eyes fixing on him. It could also be that I feel guilty (along with Wynner)!for forgetting that this world class player was available for selection. Shame on anyone who wrote him off:

Arteta's passing accuracy should always be on the high side given the fact he tends to take the safe play in favor of the adventurous. That's not intended as a criticism, just context for the numbers. I like the fact he places a high value on ball retention and almost always makes himself available as an outlet for teammates. It's unspectacular stuff and easy to overlook, but like the rudder on a boat, if you're missing it you're screwed. |

I would struggle to get you all the clips I need to re-state the point I was making with proof. But actually, no, he didn't have so many easy situations like you infer as Chamakh and co were pressing at him. He played the ball around people at times putting just the right swerve on it. It's not an easy matter to bring your fullbacks into the game with a ball in front of them and easy to control. He turned away from danger countless times and made that look easy, certainly easier than it was. But he made the right choices again and again. Now that's not to say that Arteta doesn't benefit from playing a role that often presents him with opportunities to make easy passes. That's a conversation for other games. Let's give him the kudos for doing very well in this one. |

Arteta has been brilliant in his deep laying role for us. He's been excellent since day 1 which came as a huge shock to me that he could perform in this role. I figured he would get run over too much in this spot but his awareness, anticipation, and ability to stay calm and choose the right pass have made his size irrelevant. |

Exactly. Too many people on here miss how important he is to our team. Sure, he's not the quickest guy out there, and he's getting up there a bit in age, but he's been one of the best MF's in the league in the position he plays. |
