Many of us have been hailing Mertescielny as the best in the league for quite some time now. Here's an interesting comparison with the Cahill-Terry partnership: http://www.7amkickoff.com/2014/who-has-the-better-center-back-pair-arsenal-or-chelsea/ |

good find cruyff. said it before kos & merts r in company with very best of d best ever epl defences which means they could effortlessly have been part of dat awesome invincible team. they r truly d backbone of seasons success of topping d table. midfield covering them is also solid with likes of flam & arts protecting. appointment of bould-grants us brains of george graham arguably englands best ever defensive coach. 4 members of current defence need to help out future generation of gunners on d pitch d way bould came back & positively impacted us. from joke like defenders afc is now d benchmark or case study to defending excellence. long may it continue! |

Given the fact that JT was over the hill 3 years ago according to some I dont think being compared with he & Cahill is such a great achievement !! TBH, Arsenal & Chelsea ar the only teams to have really stable pairings. City have undoubtably the best CB in Kompany but have struggled to find a partner for him. Pool have struggled to get a decent pairing & Utd are in transition. I think Smalling will be a great CB, but not sure Evans will be . Jones is the club Mr Fixit & plays to many positions for his own good . Vidic between injury & suspension has struggled all season to put games back to back & will be gone in June . Rio is done & should not start another game unless there is an emergency |

Our CB pairing was made to look like a pair of amateurs today. Of course, everybody else on the squad was, too.. |

Though they were certainly as off as any of their teammates on the day, I would contend that they weren't as bad as you suggest. I thought Monreal looked out of sorts (I suspect Gibbs will return on Wednesday), and the midfield did nothing but throw kerosene on the fire. |

As awful as anyone else on the day. My point was that the midfield did their mates at the back absolutely no favors. |

you can't keep saying that, I thought the reason the 2 CBs have had a 'decent' record was because they get a lot of protection from the midfielders, I can't think of any CB pairing in the league that got the sort of protection those two have got, as we've seen as soon as our mid fielders fck up, those 2 crumble they've got to do better than that. The midfielders aren't without blame either Ozil and Wilshere in particular, they've developed this habit of giving the ball away in dangerous areas, it was this same two that were giving the ball away at the Etihad in December. Just about everyone was shitty today. Once the ball got rolling, it careened out of control everywhere. This performance doesn't suddenly make Mert and Kosc vulnerable. You had some shell shocked players out there and a Pool team that was flying high with confidence. |

The midfield did their defensive mates no favors today. Yeah, I can say it again as it is entirely true. If you're attempting to use this one bit of analysis to take another piz on the team, fuck off. |
