Martial could have gone to Arsenal

I heard this & googled it & among the stories was this piece. It might be old & even have been on here before, I don't remember it but as tenuous as some of the links are, it did make me chuckle. I would have to conclude the 'journo" who put it together must be a Spurs fan

Wenger said he sees Martial as more of a winger.

And obviously, we did miss out on some great players. But so did a lot of other clubs. Just because we were close to signing them or scouting them doesn't mean other clubs weren't. All good young players have people following them. They can only go to one club.

Recently Tony Adams and David Seaman have said that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted them at United. That would have been interesting.

And of course, growing up, Wenger's dad (or someone) would take him to visit White Hart Lane. He had a soft spot for Tottenham.
Dennis Bergkamp was actually a Tottenham fan, and was desperately hoping til the last minute that Spurs would put in an offer for him but it never came. Ended up having to join Arsenal.

Just how things work out sometimes.

I think Wenger definitely has skipped over some good players in the past. Modric is a player I wish he had signed. In 2008 he was very good at the Euros, but Wenger was looking for a more powerful midfielder and said Modric was too weak for the PL. We had Fabregas, Rosicky, etc back then so didn't really need him but still.
Hopefully we aren't saying that about Martial. Although the price he went for I doubt we could have competed.

We missed out on a lot of players too because of the Emirates in the early-mid 2000s. A lot of great players ended up going to Chelsea or United during that time because we couldn't pay for them. Which is what surprised me this summer. I thought we would definitely have brought in a young player. A Martial type of player. Young but with potential, even if he is expensive. We paid a lot for a young Nasri and Reyes as well.

I hate reading these AW could have been signings. If they were false, at least, but they are actually true!

On one of the links I read yesterday it said Arsenal were monitoring in April him but would have to pay more than the 3.8 million Monaco paid, trnsfrmrkt.com had him at around 8 million Euros at the time Utd went in for him. Early days yet but he has added a fresh dimension to Utd. I said the way Van Gaal sets up Utd needed a player with genuine speed & quick feet & he seems to have both in abundance. He will certainly have some dips in form, but I do see why Utd were so desperate to get him now.

Even Van Gaal covered himself with his statement that he bought him for the next manager, not for him. That smacks of a lack of confidence in a player you have just paid 36 million for . Apparently Utd also made a last minute panic bid for Pato , so I very much doubt this kid was anywhere near the top of their shopping list in June

Well, I thought with Martial you guys did a Fellaini. In that you could have signed him for cheaper, but ended up paying a lot more for him when other targets fell through.

But Wenger mentioned that Monaco basically said Kurzawa and Martial were not for sale, categorically. I'm not sure how much Kurzawa went for but I think it probably would have taken a huge amount for them to part with Martial.

I wouldn't be too concerned with the price paid for his services. United needed a player like him and got him.

And whether he is a winger or a striker so far he looks like he is an intelligent player who trusts his technique. And any 19 year old is one for the future. He is not going to win you the title this year. But if he develops into a big player then the cost was worth it to get him ahead of Arsenal or City or Chelsea, who obviously were also "monitoring" him.

Agreed

Maybe if Utd had gone after him a few weeks earlier the price wouldn't be so high but you are spot on in your assessment of him .

Do we even know if we actually missed out on something with Martial? Arsenal paid 30 million for Sanchez, I can understand why the manager would be hesitant to spend that type of money on a player who up to this point has really not done anything. He scored less than 10 goals in the french league last season and while the talent is there, I can see why the manager would be uncomfortable spending that type of money on him.

Given what Wenger has said about Monaco, seems like he would have had to spend that kind of money.

Either way, I don't think Martial is what we needed at the moment. If he does turn out to be the real deal, we haven't missed out on him anymore than any other big club has.
