Eboue might be a big clown in an Arsenal shirt.
But he should be doing something right , to have made Capi in Galatasaray.

Then again.........we got Capi Gutless, Capi Vermaelen........ He was right to get booed at Wigan iirc. But fans made up to him by cheering him on the next few games.

Here is one of best Wenger's silly quotes.
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-eboue-is-becoming-a-pass-master
The quote by Wenger wasn't what was silly here. Ultimately we would apply that label to his notion that Eboue was going to make it in the midfield. His remarks about the player were made in the middle of that experiment, so they are really no more silly than overly flattering remarks managers constantly make about players to help bolster confidence.

It's not just Gala that has seen something in The Joker. At the time of Wenger's attempt to re-position him, Eboue had exhibited certain strengths that Wenger wanted to add to the midfield. Strengthening the nidfield defensively was certainly one thing, but Eboue also showed that he was capable of being very direct, delivering a quality cross, and even banging in a goal or two. Unfortunately, the other aspects of his midfield play were exposed during his on the job training, and ultimately, the move was a failure.

Wenger threw Eboue into the fire without adequate preparation, and he must bear much of the responsibility for the results. But as mistaken as he might have been in the end, Wenger indeed thought enough of Eboue to try the move.

He was a good guy but probably the most frustrating player to ever wear the Arsenal jersey.
Yeah, but at one stage a big child wouldn't let anyone express that, without upgrading it to "hate".
"Anyone?" No, just you. Hater.
Let me apologise. I thought for a moment there that a huge sigh of relief issued from the gooner nation a couple of years ago. I also thought that the only player to have been individually booed off the pitch was him. I suppose I must be confused.
Apology accepted, and sorry about your confusion.
Oh wait. I'm pretty sure there was a reason for the celebrations. Something about a player who put more effort into madcap pranks than playing football. And there's something else... I can't quite be sure... The majority of Gooners [you know, the smelly ones in the stadium] saying one of the syllables of his name really loudly with frowns on their faces. Was it BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Anyway, welcome back Emmanuel Eboué, Titan among men.
The "celebrations" that you mention for Eboue's departure must have been done in private, because I don't recall anyone popping any corks around our forum. Most Gooners on both sides of the Wenger divide saw Eboue as a more than adequate understudy to Sagna, and I don't recall anyone vilifying him or reveling in his finally leaving the club.

That said, if there was a party, and I wasn't invited, I'm gonna be pissed.

Eboue was a serviceable backup FB. Nothing more, nothing less. His confidence just imploded those that season or so with us.

Serviceable? In what sense?

If he was serviceable he would still be at the club. Such a vacancy has always existed and he failed to hold it down.

Lets focus on the heartwarming salmon leaps, Korean language skills, and the countless other antics like flying to Turkey when the Galatasary Doctors showed up in London. I am all for the addition to the Perry Groves hall of fame.

Looks like 0893 doesn't need to show up so much anymore. Off you go, show one false statement in what I said. Or shut your fat mouth.

"Serviceable" players get sold all the time in football. If Eboue wasn't at least "serviceable," Gala would not have paid perfectly good money to Arsenal for him.

Glug, glug, glug. Is that lemon-lime or fruit punch you're drinking there?

Once he got put in midfield, his went to pieces. He was thrust into a position that he was very ill-suited for. As a FB, he was decent enough to keep around but even his ability to play there was compromised once his confidence was shattered.

Jays, don't even bother. He already knows this. His main interest is disparaging Eboue.

Strictly speaking that's not true. The part of his game that started to unravel was simply completing passes to other players. If memory serves, and it always does, this started to happen well before his midfield experiment. He was always shaky in defensive situations too, which in my experience is part of the same malaise. This is what necessitated the experiment, otherwise Eboué could have happily lived in Sagna's shadow.
