Gervinho gone to Roma; confirmed

There are no surprises here. The move was signalled back in the winter window, but we held Gervinho, perhaps to give him one more chance.

Usually a departing player gets an obituary. I don't regard Gervinho as a total failure. His early days for us were phenomenal and were a great antidote to Andrei Arshavin, whose place he took in the team. I never expected him to be prolific, but his ealry days were shaping up to suggest that he was a discovery and hit a good patch of form.

Unfortunately time makes a mockery of form, and as things went on it started to become clear that Gervinho had some sort of mental block in hitting the target. He seemed to catch Hlebitis, that horrible condition where your bootlaces tighten so much that taking a shot will make your foot explode. We could mention the stats, but what was clear was that Gervinho walked the ball into the net any time he scored. And that wasn't nearly often enough. Gervinho was a decent ball carrier, but lacking the vision to pass nicely, and the confidence to shoot meant he was one dimensional.

Our squad is now down 5 players, and only Sanogo has joined.

Your thoughts.

I can't actually believe we got £8m for him, I guess roma must be desperate for a winger.

"Our squad is now down 5 players, and only Sanogo has joined." - I believe the transfer window is still young, "there is still a long way to go".Most business get done between the 29th and 31st of August.

No big loss to me (shocking, I know). But your last point is something that's becoming increasingly concerning. We're doing a good job of clearing the dead wood off the decks...but who's going to replace them?

I guess this signals more time for Ox this season unless someone else is brought in. I'm a bit worried about Ox. I haven't been as enthused as others about what I've seen so far. I know he's young but I'm real tired of hearing that line as an excuse for our players.

Fuck off Gervinho.

Thanks for nothing. And you did not get treated worse than Vieira, so don't complain.

Karma is a bitch. And it comes in the form of Ivan Gazidis.

back to back African cup of nations didn't help his cause either.. those stupid tournaments took Gervinho and other players from different clubs away for long spells.

The ACN seems to be a nightmare for form if you are an Arsenal player. When will this ridiculously frequent tournament get moved to every four years and be played in the summer?

If they were being replaced from "within" those players would all have squad numbers closer to 0 than 55, if you see what I mean? That means the plan is there to buy players. 2, 11, 17 and 27 are vacant, as as the players using 17, 20, 22 and 30 are on loan.

We now have 24 players in the squad if we exclude Bendtner, who I don't think we'll ever see in red and white again. That's an unusually small squad, even compared to previous lows we are three players short as a minimum, or up to eight if you go purely on squad numbers.

Yes, the small squad size is the only thing that's giving me hope that Wenger hasn't completely lost his mind this summer.
