Personally I liked Gervinho and felt he at least added a different dimension to the squad. The fact is that he's scored frequently in other competitions so he's not incapable, for whatever reason we just didn't manage to get the best out of him. It would not surprise me in the least to see him do very well at Roma. We certainly haven't got anyone else to replace his ability to run at players.

Yes, Gerv did add a certain dimension to the squad that we're going to lose. The problem was that was only a small part of his package...with the majority of the rest being negative. I do agree, though, that a tricky winger that is able to take people on/get by them is needed now. Cazorla and Poldi (and Theo on the other side) play differently out wide.

I'm actually getting tired of hearing "we didn't manage to get the best out of player X" the same was said about Bendtner, same was said of Chamakh, look at where they are now. Some even believe that was the case with santos Those players are simply not good enough, and their best isn't good enough for us either.

Some even believe that was the case with santos Those players are simply not good enough, and their best isn't good enough for us either. I still feel that Bendtner is a different case. His own personal issues have derailed his career, but I feel that he's always been undervalued by the posters on this forum. He was asked to play on the right wing to accommodate Ade and RvP. Think about that...he was asked to play the Theo role. And beyond that, he saved our bacon numerous times a few years back the second half of the season with timely goal after timely goal. I really don't think you can question his talent. Just look at what he's done for his national team. You can easily question his head and his heart, though.
As for the rest, Chamakh was never good enough. His blip of good/great form early on was just that...a blip. Santos is a curious case. He played very well his first season, if a bit unorthodox. His second season was a train wreck. As for Gerv. He's the most frustrating of the bunch. He was the most skillful with the ball of any that you mentioned and did, as meataxe said, offer something that nobody else on the team (apart from Arshavin in his first year and a half) offered. But the rest of his game was so damn maddening that it just wasn't worth it with him anymore.

I would disagree about Chamakh, he was doing very well in France for the 18 months leading up to his move to Arsenal. I can promise you that Chamakh will look good again, being a confidence player means a change of environment often allows the talent to come out.

I got enough of confidence players. Gervinho , Chamakh , AA . We are not here to be a students confidence boot camp to rub your ego and then you start performing for your examinations.
We need players to perform when called upon. A chip on their shoulder to remind the boss, week in week out , that they got to be in the first team. Not a reserve player. If in any doubt , look at Koscielny. Walcott even when he was benched.

You could be right, but I disagree...not on the confidence issue, but that he will ever look good again. Hopefully, he will at least look serviceable again (just not against us!).
