It was around this time five years back that I joined the cast of characters here, and as a midfielder myself, I entered the conversation telling all who would listen that matches are generally won and lost there. Yesterday's match provided us with a definitive case study supporting my claim.
Rosicky completely shut off on the run that led to Villa's first tally, and he badly missed the frame of the goal with arguably the best opportunity of the match. Congratulations to Tomas though; he was the head of yesterday's midfield class.
Ramsey again put in an effort that any greyhound would be proud of, but to say that he was lacking in quality would be an understatement. But alas, it was the two most talented fellas out there, The Smurfs (Jack and Santi), who really let the side down with their poor form, lousy decision making, and even on one occasion, lack of effort.
There are only two mids that for me belong in an EPL championship starting eleven, and they both want to and are really only capable of playing the same role (again, The Smurfs). Rosicky and Ramsey are also essentially duplicate components, but neither of them is close to being in my "eleven." You can make a case for Arteta if you wish, but not only is he aging, he is neither a physical force that can allow the other two mids more attacking freedom nor a player who is capable of making an incisive pass any more than occasionally.
When Song was in the side, Jack flourished. I know that injuries have set him back, but the change to his responsibilities necessitated by the switch from Song to Arteta has also hampered him, and the things that he's now being asked to do aren't necessarily playing to his strong suits.
So fuck Suarez or Rooney or any other strikers for that matter. Ivan and Arsene need to find two midfielders of high enough quality to increase both the talent and the depth at that position.
PS - If I was Wenger, I would bench Wilshere for every aspect of his game yesterday, particularly quitting on Agbonlahor's run. I'd let him know that until he's ready to have his game and attitude where it should be to be in the middle of the action at The Arsenal, he'll stay seated.

I'm starting to have my doubts about how good Ramsey really is. He can run all day but doesn't seem to make much of an impact as we expect from him.
Santi didn't look great but he's way short of fitness right now.

Santi didn't look great but he's way short of fitness right now. Ramsey is still young, but a solid squad player is all that he can and likely ever will be. Santi may not be fit yet, but his lack of awareness and loose touch on the play that led to the second PK were inexcusable. He and Jack are always going to be a flawed partnership unless a physical monster dedicated to winning the ball back is placed behind them.

We can't possibly sign another Specialist LB. At least we can do is sign a CB like Verm who can do a LB role. It's no point crying over spilt milk but we really dropped the ball when Sperms signed Vertongeren.
Then we got to sign a DM who can do a cameo at CB , to deputize or succeed Arteta. Rosicky and Santi should be the spear head. Ramsey and Wilshere as the fetch and carry man.
A proper Winger on the LW to show Walcott how to actually beat his man on the right.
A striker to compete with FBH.
In summary - -1 striker -1 DM -1 Winger -1 CB
Then we can be a proper team again for now. and will be really strong and competing when the injured fellows are back.

I agree with you and I have been saying this all summer. I actually think we need two signings in midfield. In all, we needed at least 3-4 signings this summer to get this team to the required standard to compete.
In relation to Wilshire, this is what Wenger had to say -
“If you bring me tomorrow players who are better than those we have, I promise you we will look at them,” he said. “You cannot say that Jack Wilshere is a super player and then ask why we do not buy better players than him. There is a shortage of top, top talent, and many clubs who have money.”
To me it seems that he sees signing additional midfielders is a threat to the progress of Wilshire. Its mind-boggling to say the least.

Dear Wenger. Wilshere , He is a super player, but he is very young . He can do with more guidance on the pitch. Wilshere is also many things. But is he a DM ? HELL NO !!!! You will be wasting him in that role.
And it's because we got no proper DM it's killing us right now.

Here is my proposed post transfer window depth chart:
DM - New signing, Arteta CM - Santi, Jack AM - New signing, Ramsey/Rosicky
The "new signings" must obviously represent upgrades on those listed behind them. If Arsenal is going to shop around for DMs, they had better find a replacement and not just an understudy for the aging Arteta. If Santi is healthy, Jack can sit his ass down for a few matches after that performance on Saturday.
If the new DM is a defensive monster with wheels, then Wenger can play The Smurfs together if he wishes.

I don't see it happening. I've been willing to moderate my expectations during every transfer window in the last seven or eight seasons. This year, thinking we were finally coming out of our extended bout of austerity, I can hardly believe what has transpired. I don't really care what you put it down to (greed, incompetence, naivety - take your pick), this year's window has been a massive disappointment and feels more than a little like a betrayal of those of us who have stood by the club and defended its actions over a long fallow period.
I celebrated last year's rescue of 4th place as I have done in some previous years. If we're in 4th again come May of next year, I expect to find myself on the side of those demeaning the "achievement".

Well said. I can't agree more.
