All last year I made a study of how we started games well, but began to slip out of them. People made a sport of blaming our forwards for not continuing to score(thereby creating a cushion). Other people made an equally absorbing sport of blaming our defenders, with the added appeal of the goals that took points off us coming late in games. I agree with the OP as to the presence of our warts. However, because it is hard to see what happens to make the unravelling of games follow the pattern of the Villa game it is one that isnt either easily diagnosed or prescribed. Rather than a meat cleaver the solution has to be laser surgery. The unravelling begins in midfield when we start to lose possession. My theory is that this always kicks in before half time, and rather than being caused by fatigue, is caused by a combination of the other team settling into the game and us not playing on adrenaline. Therefore, I would argue that our players have the instincts to move the ball in the correct way when assisted by adrenaline, but not so much when concentration has to kick in. There are several possible clauses. (a) that Wilshere is too callow, and hasn't yet mastered the disciplined art of consistency. This would be borne out by his frequent surrendering of possession. (b) that Arteta is overused, fatigued, jaded and unable to keep going longer than 20 minutes (c) that the attacking midfielder is in too crowded a space, or is playing too far forward to reach with a pass within the tactical parameters of short, crisp, and incisive passes (d) that the three players we have in here don't fully understand the nuances of a 3 man midfield, one designed to suit a certain Cesc Fabregas. Ramsey and Wilshere for examples are both British and the 433 system has never really existed in Britain until very recent times.. (e) The players don't get own with each other, confuse their roles and lack gel because of it. Now I am going to say all of the above have a certain appeal. Solving the problem that the OP sees would probably involve all of the above being solved. To run through that solution quickly would involve elements of rotating players(Arteta) to avoid fatigue, taking the pressure off Wilshere by using a more experienced player, sorting out specific roles in midfield (attack/continuity/defence) and make sure that the player in the AM role isn't isolated and not unimportantly, drilling the players to create familiarity. The actual solution is to sign a defensive midfielder, but one who goes into the first team. That frees up Arteta and Wilshere to evolve into the attacking and continuity players, but Arteta remains a defensive midfielder in reserve. Santi Cazolra should be reborn as a second striker, probably left sided and just shift that into being a selection headache up front. Ramsey should be re-oriented as a defensive midfielder once things settle down. Rosicky should be used much more in the attacking role. One player arriving would facilitate all that. |
