I'm feeling unappreciated Cruyff. I posted an awful lot of those same insights about him in the summer and predicted a better second season so long as he had sufficient games to prove it.

See his goal against Australia? Yes, touch of a rapist.

Some nice stats thrown in there to show how Giroud has improved in all areas of his game this season. He's making great, well-timed runs in the box and getting the ball at the right moments to fire it in.

I felt that he was decent enough in his link up play last season and that has even shown added improvement this year.

And can posters drop the whole "touch of a rapist" line? It's disturbing and offensive no matter who it's applied to.

Well said. It's not of my making, but as a comment it stands on its own to prove the chilling hubris of the author.

Santry, you're right about him looking better in the summer and your prediction of his improvement was correct.
But I had my reservations because I saw him as a bit of a flat track bully. He was bullying center halfs in France but couldn't do it in England. He was scoring goals at home but couldn't do it away in and especially in the big matches.

Good to see however that his improvement is very real. In any meaningful statistic you look at he's improved.

One thing Wenger has helped him with is his finishing. He was going for power last year but now he's added a bit of subtlety to his play inside the box. He's placing his shots more, even chipping the keeper on occassion.

The finish against Sunderland was absolutely sublime and the best finish I've seen this season so far. He wouldn't have done it last year.

The other thing is that he's much more confident now. Last season with Cazorla, Podolski, Giroud new to the team and the country, they didn't feel like they completely belonged or if they were good enough. Now you can see that they've become part of the group and ready to show what they're capable of. Giroud's gotten used to the english game and now wins more duels than ever against defenders.

And finally his overall play is more intelligent. I think Wenger's told him not to be too audacious or too risky. He seems to know his limits now.
Last season he would get the ball on the edge of the box and try an outrageous shot which would invariably go high and wide. Or try to thread a pass through the eye of a needle and give it away.
Now he plays a much simpler game. Less flicks and tricks, no shots from ridiculous angles or distances. Just simple pass and move. His touch has improved massively too and he tries to play more on the first touch than before.

If you are saying he was physically dominant in France in a way that he couldn't be in England it's an interesting theory. I don't deserve special praise for assuming a second season would be better than the first, it is a bland enough assumption. Even a slight improvement in finishing was going to mean he got appreciated for all the other things he does well.

Well he was winning 70% of aerial duels he went up for in France, which is a ridiculous number. In England he isn't winning nearly as many, and he never will, but he's improved from last season.
And you can see that he's more up for it too. He doesn't whine and complain, doesn't collapse to the floor like he used to. Just dusts himself down and gets on with it.
