I have no problems letting him go even if we have no replacements. Of course, I would feel differently if he was to be played in a slightly advanced role. But that too looks very unlikely now given the re-signing of Flamini.

... and with Brazil around the corner, I think it's best to let him maximize his chances while playing elsewhere. He saved us well when he could and since the WC comes 4 big years after plus how short the life of a footballer is, I think the club should be considerate.
So you'd be fine rolling with no natural back-up CBs? Doesn't sound like a recipe for success.
TV has never been a recipe for success!

So, if "success" is really your concern other than maybe just fulfilling games, surely we have no need for TV...
This takes the biscuit. In a thread full of premature comments on the state of Vermaelen's career... so quite an achievement really.
TV was at his best when bombing forward and aiding the attack! Unfortunately, that's not what he was acquired for. His meagre defending capabilities saved us well during a time when the club couldn't or lacked the desire to spend and frankly we didn't enjoy the luxury we have now. So, per the role the gaffer acquired him for, TV was never a recipe for success - we either failed or refused to harness his natural footballing instinct and as such no wonder he's being passed over for any defensive duties.
Vermaelen steadied our defence in a huge way when he arrived. His defending then was top notch, the only negative being a slight nervous tendency on the part of Koscielny. I think he rushed back from a bad hamstring injury and never really recovered last year. But I also think its ridiculous to write him off as you continue to do.

Out of the three defenders we have Verm is the only one who out and out attacks the ball. He has excellent distribution as a defender, which has people eyeing him for midfield, but that's not where he is of value. He covers left back adequately, though we are well stocked. He's the kind of player you need to have and as the season drags on I can promise you will see a lot more of him. As legs tire in February we are not going to be able to absorb pressure from teams and allow them waltz down outside channels and expend time, territory and lung capacity chasing them because we have conceded space. We will need someone who efficiently uses 5 metre movements and brute strength to pip the ball out of opponents and Vermaelen will be that player, most likely at the expense of Mertesacker.
