Mexico may be the geographic "other," and large pockets of their supporters may be anywhere from disrespectful to hostile and aggressive, but I reject the notion that they would lay down at any point in a match to keep even the hated US out of the WC. I completely disagree with that. They would've booted the ball in their own half among themselves for the last several minutes and ran out the clock rather than try to win the match if it was the other way around.
They absolutely abhor us since we've barged in on their dominance of the region and they would love nothing better than blocking our qualification if they could. Call me cynical, but to think otherwise is to ignore the reality of this rivalry.

I actually find it glorious and even more embarrassing for the Mexicans that we had to save their bacon in a match we didn't even need to win. That's gotta hurt their pride. Also, they will probably lose to New Zealand. They have no chemistry and play with no desire.

I ignore no "realities" here Jay, but I still reject your assertion. I think we all have a pretty good handle on this rivalry and how it's become more intense as the U.S. has grown in quality. Those chants of dos a cero are music to the ears of any who have followed the long evolution of soccer in this country.
However, I'm still trying to get my head around the idea that anyone can accuse a team of despicable behavior and at the same time advocate the adoption of that behavior.
You really want to dis Mexico? Play your games as if you couldn't care less where they are in the trailing pack. You know, kind of like we did in those last few minutes against Panama.

Nothing is more enjoyable than piling on as much misery as possible on a hated sports rival. Just makes things more fun to me. Being in a way responsible for putting the final nail in Mexico's coffin by hook or crook would've put a smile on my face.

Qualification all wrapped up before you even kick off, so you're playing a meaningless game against Panama that you're losing 2-1 in extra time. With the results that were happening elsewhere, you bitter, hated rival Mexico was going to miss out altogether on qualifying. So what do you do? Well I know a 100 things that I would've done and one thing I wouldn't do.
I WOULDN'T SCORE 2 FUCKING GOALS IN THE LAST 3 MINUTES TO WIN THE FUCKING GAME AND GIVE MEXICO A CHANCE TO QUALIFY THROUGH A PLAYOFF AGAINST NEW ZEALAND!!!!!!
I am beside myself this morning. There is ZERO chance that Mexico would've even tried in the same position if the roles were reversed. I fucking hate you Klinsmann. You had one job last night in those last several minutes and that's to tell your team to just knock it around and watch and laugh as Mexico miss out.
I can't stand Mexico's team, but... First time ever I've seen a coach vilified for winning a match. Odd as this is, it also misses the fact the U.S. lineup was full of guys who are on the bubble for selection. If I'm one of them, I'm playing my ass off for as many minutes as I can get. Screw the "big picture", I want to be on the plane to Brazil. And if this is true - "There is ZERO chance that Mexico would've even tried in the same position if the roles were reversed." - that makes them a pretty shitty organization. Are you really arguing that we should be equally shitty? Exactly right on the squad guys on the bubble, do you really think they would half-ass it and risk missing out... I thought Johanssen more or less redeemed a pretty scattershot effort with the goal... I am as big a USMNT supporter as possible (I live in Denver and was bundled to the hilt of for the Costa Rica snow tilt, great fun!!), but I have never had the vitriol vs. Mexico that Jays has, I hate 'em when we play 'em, but don't really pay them any mind when we aren't....
One thing no one is discussing is how gut wrenching it must be to be a Panama player/fan, man, those guys have to be just wrecked today.... Felt a bit bad for 'em...
Not sure where to find odds, but I would put money on New Zealand in that tie... Mexico just looks flat and off, remember they are one moment of brilliance from having played in a dead rubber last night....

The celebrations from the Panamanian players and fans were almost unbelievable when they went ahead in the 83rd. It looked like post-match celebration.

If anyone can find the full version of the Mexican announcer going off after the USA scored the second goal in stoppage time, please post a link. On the news, I heard a few things, including "God bless America," but evidently he not only heaped lavish praise on the US team, he lambasted his own team as well.

Mexico seem like they have deep problems, but honestly do US soccer fans sell their souls to the devil so easily that they would like to see their team shamefully throw a match? This explains a lot. Cruyff is spot on here, the better thing is to see your rivals fail on their own account.

The extrapolation of one fan's remarks to a general statement about US soccer fans might be similarly revealing. If one were to make such a leap.
