Two things first:
1) Fuck Mexico*. No, seriously. Mexican soccer can fuck itself. Diving, cheating, dirty thugs. And their fans. Despicable, urine/bottle/crack throwing donkeys that they are.
2) I really feel badly for the Panamanians. Players and fans alike.

That said, CONCACAF needs Mexico in the WC. Realistically, they're the only other team (besides the USA) that has a chance to get out of the group. Plus, the ramifications down the road for Mexico are huge (financial, competitive, etc). As appealing as it sounds to be able to kick them around for the next 'x' years, it's bad for the US and bad for the federation if there is only one decent team in the region.

*Just anything to do with the Mexican national team.
Well, they may be Despicable, urine/bottle/crack throwing donkeys, but at least they don't stab each other after matches like American fans.

Actually Joe, they do stab each other at soccer matches in Mexico. Lots more shenenigans go on too.

Well ok so we have that in common.

So today was the first time playing with my Mexicano mates since Tuesday's dramatics, and I received a hero's welcome as if I had scored both stoppage time goals myself. I had one guy bowing to me and another claiming that he had given up on his native Mexican side in favor of los Estados Unidos. I even received a brief "USA, USA!" chant. I also have promises of several twelve packs on Sunday (which I will benevolently share).

Hopefully, the goodwill lasts through the holiday season so I can get some tamales out of this.
Dude, give it up already. Nobody believes your stories about playing with these Mexican professionals.

I really don't see much in common at all Joe. If memory serves me, you're from the Bay Area so the recent stabbing death there and that vicious beatdown on the fan a year or so ago outside the stadium is a hot button topic there.

Let's not get carried away though. The chances of a person getting killed, stabbed, assaulted, mixed up in a fan crush, seeing Facist/Nazi salutes, having monkey chants or bananas thrown from the stands, having the stadium catch fire, seeing organized fan brawls among supporters, or general rioting at a sporting event in the US isn't even close to what happens in most countries. In fact, It's a very rare occurence when outrageous events happen In conjunction with a game In the US. And this is coming from someone living in Philadelphia which is supposedly the epicenter of shitty fan behavior in America. Its way safer to go to any game in the US than probably anywhere else on the planet.

From time to time people on here request that others stop using certain phrases or language, or ask that something be left off limits as the subject of a joke. I'm not going to do that per se, but I would like to know when people are going to stop equating a team, a city, a region or a nation with the things done by their worst-behaved fans.

I suspect you are missing my point. You're making vile statements about an entire fan base (and the more sensitive among us might even think an entire nation) based on the actions of a few idiots. I have a hunch that most people in the Azteca are not despicable urine/bottle/crack throwing donkeys.

PS: I don't think they've ever set up an actual jail at the Azteca.

My only broad criticism of Mexico supporters is that they turn on their team a bit too quickly at times. Like I said previously, I had one amigo quit Mexico and pledge allegiance to the USA the other day. That said, the extremists that have punctuated rivalries between the Giants and Dodgers or 49ers and Raiders with disgusting acts of violence are no more representative of the general fan base than the urine bomb chuckers in the Azteca.

If you follow along, you would see that rw is the one trashing the Mexico team. Not me. My input here was to point out that stabbings and other things happen at sporting events in Mexico. Much more than what goes on here.

PS: I don't think they've ever set up an actual jail at the Azteca.
They had holding cells briefly at the Vet and a judge on hand for half a season before they realized it would be bad publicity to keep it there and moved it several blocks away to nearby police station. The Linc also had holding rooms, not iron bar jail cells to keep drunk and unruly fans until the cops took them. They did away with those too cuz they were never needed.

P.S. I'd rather go to an Eagles game in a Cowboys jersey anyday than take my life in my hands and go to El Azteca with a US jersey on.

Don't knock it till you try it.

Anyway Azteca probably safer in that spot than the LA Coliseum.
