In 17 seasons, he's underperformed twice. Can't say that about any other manager in the history of the EPL. |

The 2005-06 season, when we wore that awful maroon kit - was one of his most disappointing season, when we were so poor in the league. Mourinho had him in his pocket. But he still managed to reach the CL final. 2006-07, we played ok in the league but he still managed to get us into 4th. 2007-08 - Started so well like this season and lack of signings and squad depth meant we dropped like flies later. 2008-09 - Mediocre in the league with Aston Villa of all teams giving us a fright! In the CL we reached the Semis. 2009-10 - Mediocre season, better in league finished 3rd, but poor in the CL. We had a big problem of conceding from the counter attack! 2010-11 - Managed to finish 3rd and poor in CL knockout stage. Same old story 2011-12 - Again scraped thro to finish 4th and CL knockout stage. Same old story What a rollercoaster of emotions with Wenger! When u just look at the results like this - his record is extremely mediocre since the invincibles. But one thing is for sure, despite whatever pressure he is under, our man manages to achieve something every year, be it reaching the CL final/semi-final or finishing 3rd or 4th (if u wanna call it an achievement). And still provides breathtaking football (mostly against teams that allow us to play) If we are now in the renaissance years. Its going to be exciting as hell with Monsieur Wenger. Because starting the clock at 2005 when the cash was tied up in servicing a capital loan is fair and not in the least bit selective. |

Santry, I'm not sure that's entirely accurate because if you read the piece carefully, the author points out we had huge cash reserves at the time. However, it's also obvious that outside of Wenger, the leadership of the club was an absolute war zone during those few years. I think that was a main factor in Wenger's conservatism, as was the also-mentioned backlash from too much transition in 05-06. |
