Quote: “I decided the departure of Ozil. I prefer Di Maria for the balance of the team. It’s true, that maybe Di Maria has less quality than Ozil but on a profile of dynamism, character and help to the team I preferred Di Maria.” |

Not the first time that a manger will let a player go for tactical/positional reasons. Di Maria is a red herring, whereas Bale was all lined up for a free role. Carlo did not want a glut of players in his hole. Still, for a player like Özil you should accommodate different formations and do your best to keep an "old fashioned number 10".

Well, in the summer it seemed like they were willing to let both of them go, but Di Maria wanted to stay and fight for his place. But I can see why Ancelotti would have felt that Ozil didn't fit into his tactics. |
