Just wondering who folks think we could/should be targeting during the Jan window. Obviously with Suarez signing a new contract he's off the table (not that Liv. would have sold him during this window in any case. Three players in particular have caught my eye and we'd be giving disadvantaging rivals at the same time if we got them. I said before the season that we should be making Chelsea an offer they can't refuse for Lukaku and I still feel like that applies, pace and power is a nasty combination. Jose doesn't seem over-enthused about him and I'm sure he'd fit in well with us. I think Chelsea would find an offer of 20-25m very hard to turn down. Llalana (sp?) looks a fantastic player as both a creator and goal threat and could easily replace Santi if we sold him. A more balanced player than Santi IMO. Ross Barkley too looks very tidy. I'm not 100% sure where he'd fit in the team right now but we could always loan him back to Everton for the rest of the season. He's quite dynamic and looks to have a real bulldog nature. He or Llalana could be a replacement for Rosicky down the track when he loses his edge. I'd also like another pacey centre back in the mold of Kosc. The reason BFG/Kos works so well is because of Kos's recovery pace. We miss that when he's not there. Verm can replace BFG when he's not available and the new guy could cover for Kos. Don't have anyone specific in mind right at the moment though. Edited by madasameataxe, Dec 23 2013, 09:35 AM.

Lukaku would be dynamite. There's something going on with him and Mourinho. When asked why they sent Lukaku on loan, he said something to the effect of, "Go ask the player why he's not here." So there could be some ill will between them. To me, it will be another case where a rival won't sell to us though. Barkley is an exciting player, reminds me of Ramsey but not as polished. The main target has to be another striker. Who is out there that we could legitimately get that would immediately help, I simply don't know. I always feel the more sold CB's, the better off you are. For now, Verm and Sagna (in a pinch) will probably be how it goes the rest of the year. |

The urgent need is for a striker. Chelsea like Pool is not going to sell a budding star to a direct rival. |

We buy no one - we manage with Poldi. |

The only decent striker from the EPL that we would have a chance at getting is Benteke. He had a good start to the season, got hurt and missed about a month I think, and has been brutal since. Lambert actually dropped him a few weeks ago because he was playing so poorly. Other than that, it would probably be someone outside England that would get signed. |

Or even Walcott. He has wanted to play as a full out striker for a long time. AW just doesn't want to play him there. |

Exactly,..AW is the kind of manager who shows 'long' faith in what he has! I'm not expecting any striker to come in, not until someone tells me we are really vying for the title. |

... then someone who can score goals has to be acquired! We can't rely on midfielders, I mean we can't have a midfielder as our top scorer if we are serious about the title. |

Chelsea won't sell us Lukaku. Just like Liverpool won't sell us Suarez. And Lukaku isn't what we need anyway. He's a young player with a lot of potential but not worth blowing 30m over. We need to go for the top strikers. And reliable reports are saying that we are seriously interested in Diego Costa. And I'm sure players like Dzeko, Lewandowski, etc are on the radar. But any big move that happens will be over the summer. No one's going to sell a key player in the middle of the season. So yeah, I think we will rely on Poldi/Walcott/Bendner/Sanogo as back up to Giroud for the rest of the season. Will it be enough? I don't know. I wish Podolski hadn't gotten injured as he would've certainly worked on his game as a no.9. It's 4 months of development wasted. Can't say what we have will be enough but if we've lasted half the season on top of the table then why not the other half? |
