Washington, D.C.
In the early 21st century, when the United States of America was divided into thirteen commonwealths, Washington, DC, the pre-War capital city of the U.S., became part of the Columbia Commonwealth, along with Virginia and Maryland. After the Great War, the city's radioactive ruins and the surrounding area were named the Capital Wasteland.

Adams Air Force Base
Adams Air Force Base is a heavily-fortified Enclave settlement outside the Capital Wasteland. It is only available in the Broken Steel add-on for Fallout 3. The base can only be accessed through the Presidential Metro, and is not accessible before you have reached the appropriate point in the quest line. Point Lookout
Point Lookout was never directly hit by the nuclear bombs dropped on the Capital Wasteland during the Great War, but here, the wasteland's irradiated desert terrain gives way to dense swamps and abandoned buildings where nature has gradually removed the human presence over the two hundred years since the War. The area is home to the swampfolk, a crazed, highly deformed, inbred people who live all around the swamps of the region.

Zion Canyon
Zion Canyon was spared most of the horrors of the Great War, and remains an unspoiled wilderness. In the immediate aftermath of the war only one man is known to have inhabited Zion - a survivalist by the name of Randall Clark. He had been camped out in the park, slowly losing his mind, when a group of Mexicans came to the area, calling it "paradise." Clark watched the Mexicans, never making contact but subtly aiding them when they needed it. In 2096, a group of Vault 22 dwellers, infected with Beauveria Mordicana, arrived in the area, killing and eating the Mexicans, with Clark unable to rescue them. Clark killed most of the Vault 22 dwellers or waited for them to die of their infection, but befriended Sylvie, who was caught in a bear trap, and ended up having a child with her. She died during childbirth from an overdose of meds and the child was stillborn.

The Divide
Before the Great War, this area was home to Hopeville and Ashton: a missile base and a city under its protection. Apart from being a major element of the ballistic defense matrix, Hopeville was also the subject of a major Big MT research project concerning meteorology; a project that apparently ended in a disaster, spawning the dust storms the Divide is infamous for. Beside the project, Big MT was also a partner in different enterprises: at one point, the entire local hippie commune that protested outside Hopeville against the ongoing Sino-American War were rounded up by special riot control officiers wearing a new model of L.A.P.D. riot armor, the whole regulated by the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment wearing a recognizable helmet and a more advanced riot armor, shipped off them to the big MT as test subjects.
