After having visited the church earlier this day, Rin returned to her temporary home, here in Alsace-Lorraine. Due to the Tohsaka family's wealth, she had been able to afford purchasing this house a few months in advance, after discovering that she would be a candidate in the Grail War. It was fairly large, and much more than she needed, but at the same time, due to her youth, it was the sort of house she saw as a "home." After returning home, she had started setting up for the ritual to summon her servant. From what she had known, it was very likely that the Grail War was already underway, and she needed to quickly enter into it as well. With little hesitation, she began to set everything up for the ritual. This is when we reach the present. Rin had just finished the final touches on the summoning circle, now covering a large portion of the basement's floor. She had researching the procedure a bit in advance. From what she knew and understood, this ritual wasn't exactly that difficult, and really didn't require much on the Master's part, but the Grail did practically everything for her. She walked up to the circle, exhaling deeply. After a few deep breathes, she began to concentrate as much as possible. Although she was aware that the Grail did the work, she didn't want to mess up anyway. She had to do this as perfectly as possible. Unlike some other masters, she actually had no relic. Instead she was simply going to conduct the ritual. She wasn't as worried about who her servant might be, compared to some of the magi. Instead she figured any servant should be able to at least hold their own well enough. Rin herself was an expert at fighting magi, so during that time it should be possible for her to engage the enemy master. In truth, she couldn't really decide on a servant. She also had no real means to acquire a relic, since it was unlikely that the Church would back her up. She would have to just use her own resources, and with her complete lack of connections, it might prove to be quite an ordeal. Magi probably never encountered such a problem. Though if she had to choose, she would probably work best with a Saber, or Lancer. The two strongest classes in regards to close combat, while still retaining their sanity. Rin wanted to perform well in the war, so she would do her best, but in the end she needed to uphold her duty for the Church, and eliminate heretics. Honoring her father was second in the end. Still, she understood that making a pact with a servant meant they would both do their best to win. She wouldn't want to betray the expectations of whatever legendary figure stood beside her. Rin now prepared to summon her servant, began to chant an incantation. She stared at the circle, to watch the effects, as she began to chant. The further chant went on, the more the light began to gather within the circle. Her command seals began to grow brightly as well. Rin was beginning to feel nervous. While she was naturally gifted as a magus, she felt as though she were tampering with forces she shouldn't be involved with. The power of the heroic spirits wasn't something to be trifled with. They were far beyond her, wondered if the Church could even deal with them effectively, if they were forced to. She continued the chant, feeling the large amount of mana building up before her. This power belonged to a single individual. It was almost terrifying to imagine that there were beings with this kind of power around. As she finished the chant, the room become engulfed in a bright light. Rin reflexively recoiled, and shielded her eyes with her arms. The sheer amount of power that was suddenly built up caused some sort of burst of wind, which nearly forced Rin to brace herself for a moment, and blew her cloak around wildly. Suddenly everything began to return to normal. Rin knew the summoning had succeeded simply from the effects she had just felt. Though she had no clue who it might've been that she summoned, she uncovered her eyes, and tried to get a good look at just what sort of hero was summoned before her. The light of the circle lit the room like a white flare before dying down. Where before was once an empty space stood a young man with broad shoulders and built limbs. He was not a large or terribly imposing figure, but the eyes below the white hair on his head flickered like the dark waves they mirrored. Chain-mail armor fitted with leather plates covered his chest, legs, and hands. His boots were leather and were relatively thin and a leather harness wrapped around his waist with two hand axes in the loops by his hips. There blades were roughly the size of his fists and extended lengthwise to just above the shafts themselves which were dyed a dark blue. If one observed closely they would see that the sides were flattened and that gold had been inlaid in two very thin strips intertwining on either side and stretched from the base of the blades to the shaped handles wrapped in leather. In his boot rested a sheath with a knife held inside, apart from this he bore nothing else, no helm. The warrior's hands rested on the heads of his axes and he stood straight and tall, his gaze fixed on the magus in front of him. For a moment neither said anything, whether this was due to the mage still trying to adjust to the change in light or by choice the warrior did not know. Regardless a corner of his mouth turned upward. “Tell me then girl, if you claim to be my Master in this war, what is your name?” The question came out almost as a shout. Not one of haughty demand, but almost as an excited challenge, as if her answer would determine more than a mere title. |

Rin stared in slight amazement for a few moments. She knew very well what this ritual was for, but when faced with an epic hero of legend, it's still a bit surprising. The man who stood before her was a hero who had probably achieved greatness through quests or adventures. It's not like she herself didn't do similar things as an executor, but the scales were a bit different. She tried to overcome the amazing scene, and the excitement of meeting a legendary hero for long enough to answer the question which had finally broken the silence. She took several deep breaths, apparently preparing herself mentally for the Holy Grail War she had stepped into. As though everything hit her at once, she realized again just how major this was. She smiled confidently at the hero before her, "I'm Kotomine Rin, an executor of the Church, and your Master in this war. I hope we'll be able to work well together." She stared at the many armaments on him, he seemed like some sort of hunter. It wasn't exactly what she expected. She wasn't even completely sure which class he was, though she had a feeling that it might've been Saber. She smiled again, apparently satisfied with her servant, without even knowing a single thing about the hero. She just had a feeling. "And you, might I ask your name as well?" The grin grew wider across his face as the magus spoke. She answered clearly and without hesitation as any proper Master in the war should have. “I am Beowulf! The King of Warriors.” Beowulf's hands relaxed at his sides and he walked forward, his boots falling softly, as if they were walking in powdered snow. He stopped in front of the girl and looked down into her eyes, blue like his own but lighter, more like ice or the sky than the depths of the sea. The warrior had learned long ago in his life how to see all of his surroundings without moving his eyes and had noticed the muscles that shifted beneath her clothes. She did not have muscle mass, in fact she had quite the slim figure, but her body seemed hardened and strong. “Tell me then girl, what do you know of this Holy Grail War?” |

She immediately recognized the name of the hero she had summoned. It would be ridiculously not to. An extremely famous hero that probably most people in the world should at least recognize, if not know the man's legends immediately. She couldn't help but smile, somewhat embarrassed. It was almost like meeting some famous idol. This was a hero that was hard not to know. Based on his legends he was no doubt a powerful warrior. She should assume that he can hold his own in battle for sure. Just what sort of hero would it take to fight off the legendary warrior Beowulf? There were no doubt other famous heroes, but Rin couldn't focus on that for the time being. Beowulf walked up to her, apparently judging her. She wasn't sure what sort of thoughts went though her warrior's mind. She felt as though he was trying to judge how capable she might be. She immediately thought that he might be disappointed, since she thought she probably didn't look particularly strong. She was confident in her skill and fighting potential, but at a glance it might be hard to tell. He asked her a simple question about the Holy Grail War. She felt she had a pretty good grasp of it. "The Holy Grail War is a battle between many magi, who summon ancient heroes to their side. It's a battle where only the final pair can obtain the Holy Grail, and make their wish." She knew a bit more, including the creation of the system, but she felt that the question was only about the way the war itself worked, and nothing unnecessary. "It's an unforgiving battle, where magi often take the lives of those involved. There are many corrupt magi who try to use this battle as a way to gain power. Personally I am against such mindsets, and wish to make sure that no magi abuse the power of their servant, or have a chance to obtain the Grail. Of course, I still intend to try to win, but I do not want any unnecessary casualties." |

The King of Warriors nodded at Rin's explanation. The information the Grail had inserted in his mind had included that they were to be summoned by a Master, but it only informed them that they were someone with a strong desire. It was good that his Master was aware of the war and had not stumbled into it blindly. Judging by the look on her face she also knew his name. His body and limbs crackled with excitement, so his song had survived even in this age. Glorious! Not only that, but the girl had no desire to include innocents in this war. It was good to see such integrity in the face of a promise like an item to grant any of your desires. “Good! I am glad to have been summoned by such an honorable Master. Given the knowledge of your age that I possess I was worried all desire for glory had passed with time. Tell me then, what have you planned for us to do next?” As he spoke his thoughts turned inward to the information the Grail had placed within his mind. It was like a chest, its contents containing whatever he needed at the moment, yet he could tell there was far more inside of it. He knew his current location on the globe, the nation and people who lived here, their language, accepted knowledge, cultural practices. Incredible! The Franks had done well in all the years he had been gone. The girl before him was clearly not a native of this land, and he found he also knew her language and culture as well only by desiring to know it. It was clear however that the only information he possessed was of the present however. All that had passed since his death was completely unknown to him. Perhaps this was a safety measure by the Grail, after all, if he knew all of history than he would know all about his possible opponents. Knowing one opponent was part of a warrior's work, it would have been wrong for the Grail to do such a task for them. Edited by RequiemArc, Aug 10 2012, 09:15 AM.

Rin pondered on the question for a few moments. What they would do next? It wasn't an easy decision. Rin wanted to make sure no innocents were involved in the war, and also needed to gain information about the enemies. Simply walking around wasn't exactly safe, though. But were they any real options other than that? Being indecisive and trying to wait for information to pop up wasn't a good idea. Who knows what sort of havoc could potentially have been committed in that time frame, before they had information on an enemy. Plus, it might be a bit insulting to Beowulf to simply have him wait around. "Beowulf, do you think we should simply go scouting? I do not know what exactly we might find, but it's possible we could locate an enemy. It's also possible we might be able to save outsiders from being involved as well." She smiled a bit at the thought of talking to Beowulf. She simply couldn't get over the thought of associating with such a legendary hero. "I don't know what your preferred combat situations are, but I'll leave strategy involving battle between servants to you. I assume you know what you can handle best. I don't want to force you into a situation where you might be at a disadvantage." Rin turned to look around the basement. There was no real reason to linger down here any longer. She motioned for her servant to follow her, and began to walk up the stairs. "I'm not exactly sure if a Servant needs food or anything to drink, but I encourage you to help yourself to whatever you may need." She wasn't sure how hospitable one should be for her servant. Normally a Master wouldn't be necessarily kind to their servant. At least, that's what she understood. Master's often exert their dominance over their servant, with the power of their command spells. She didn't exactly agree with such logic. Beowulf was an epic hero, and would serve as her partner. No, it was probably more accurate to say she served as a minor aide to him. She was confident in her ability to hunt down and kill magi, but that was something Beowulf could probably accomplish in an instant, if necessary. A servant was far beyond an ordinary human. As she reached the top of the stairs, she opened the door, leading to quite a nice looking kitchen and dining area. It didn't look like it was in use very often, though. Rin hadn't really used her current home very much, though she made sure it was stocked with anything necessary. |

Beowulf followed the girl upstairs, grinning slightly at her lack of a complete plan and excitement. She was eager and confident in their ability to handle whatever they came across, much like himself in his youth. Good. The basement door opened in front of him and stepped into the light of the main house. The girl certainly had wealth. The kitchen was crafted with large marble countertops and large appliances. There were cabinets of fine wood with carved designs on front an the floor appeared to be of cut decorative stone. Connected to the kitchen was a small room with chairs and bookcases with books filling them. He walked over to the refrigerator and bent down and peered inside, his blue eyes roving over the standing cornucopia stocked with slabs of steak, vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs, butter, and other foods he had never seen. The cool air hit his skin and he thought back to Geatland. To preserve their food they either needed to dig storerooms below rivers and streams or else salt the food or seal it in barrels of vinegar. The sea blue orbs flicked up to the little bright light illuminating the food and froze there for a moment, lost in thought. Electricity. He slowly began pulling two steaks from the assortment, answering the girl as he did so. “Scouting is always the best option to gain knowledge of your enemies locations and actions-” He stood up, the steaks in one hand with vegetables on top of them and a jug of milk in the other. “Bravery is to be lauded and expected, but only mere brawlers, not warriors, rush into a fight without even bothering to find out their opponents name.” In a few swift motions everything was set down and the stovetop turned on with cast iron pans set upon it. He quickly opened cabinets until he found cutting boards and set them down next to the vegetables before quickly crossing into the room with bookcases. His sapphire eyes tilted to the side as he scanned spines. Many of the books had simply been chosen to fill space, and as a result many of the titles were exactly what Beowulf was looking for. He grinned like wolf on the scent of a caribou. A stack of eight or so books was balanced on one of his hands as he swiped a closed laptop off a nearby side table. Walking by the girl and still grinning he gently pressed it into her hands as he passed. “Scouting ourselves is proper but part of being a king is knowing and trusting the men under your command.” He said this as he set the books down next to the vegetables and set the steaks on the pan's, covering the explosion of sizzling with glass lids before beginning to chop the vegetables with a knife from a rack. He would never use his weapons for such a task. As he cut with a hand his other grabbed the top book from the stack. It was a dull brown with gold lettering on its spine and nothing on front. A book meant more to be shown stacked next to its brothers than actually read. The gold letters sparkled slightly as he opened it to the first page. The Legends of King Arthur and His Knights As he began to read he spoke once more, his voice dropping into almost a musing tone. “No doubt the fighting of the other servants will have caught the Franks attention.” While one could not tell by looking at him, the King of Warriors could feel his very skin crackling with excitement. The battles to come would surely be glorious, and his song would echo down for ages more! “Tell me girl, since you seem to have heard of me.” His voice rose back up, full of vigor. “What do you know of my song?” Edited by RequiemArc, Aug 12 2012, 09:22 AM.

Rin was actually somewhat confused. She certainly couldn't have prepared for this. Who could? It was even more unexpected than summoning up a legendary hero. It had completely shattered her image of the hero. Though not necessarily in a bad way. Seeing the ancient warrior, often depicted as a gruff warrior, go through the kitchen like some sort of master was something beyond her imagination. It simply didn't click as natural to her. She knew she had offered it, but she expected ... something different. She wasn't going to comment on it, though, and struggled to regain control of her senses. As he went through the kitchen, apparently even knowing how to use the stove top properly, he explained his thoughts on scouting, or blindly fighting. She wasn't sure what his main point was on the matter, as he eventually started discussing the virtues of being a king, and having men under them. ... Well, Rin wasn't a king, and as far as she was aware, there was no army in the area for them to use either. That only left scouting as an option, right? They had no one to trust to perform their tasks for them. Rin shrugged and simply sat the table. She felt as though communicating with an ancient hero might have some issues. He was right about gaining knowledge, but the rest of his points seemed a bit outdated. At the end of everything, as he was staring at some book he had went and retrieved during his meal preparations. Towards the end, he questioned what she knew about his song. That was certainly an awkward question. She wasn't sure she even wanted to answer it at all. "Well ... I don't know if I should answer this. I know how you're an amazing warrior, who fought off monsters, like Grendel, and it's mother. Far off into the future, you even got to face a dragon. It's actually a fairly famous tale. I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say you're among the more famous heroes." She didn't really want to elaborate any further on the dragon part of the tale. As far as she knew, it was the point where he died. Talking to a hero about his own deeds was sort of awkward to begin with, though. She didn't really like this subject much. "So when do you think we should begin scouting? ... If that's what you've decided on, anyway. I suppose it makes more sense to scout at night. That's when most magi tend to go out, from the information I've been told." |

While it may have appeared that Beowulf was fluent with cooking, that was not entirely true. He had been on more than enough expeditions to know how to add heat to what you wanted to eat, but that was as far as his skill got him. He proceeded to dump the vegetables into the pans and turned up the heaters. The information given to him by the Grail was incredible. Imagine, you could cook without a fire and did not even need to add more wood to increase the heat! He also found himself able to read far faster than he ever could in his life, and was burning through the accounts of these “knights of the round table”. His grin only grew wider before dropping straight into a frown. "Well ... I don't know if I should answer this. I know how you're an amazing warrior, who fought off monsters, like Grendel, and it's mother. Far off into the future, you even got to face a dragon. It's actually a fairly famous tale. I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say you're among the more famous heroes." So, she did know of some of his deeds, though her hesitation confused him. Had he not just asked her? Of she found him a great warrior than why was she so unwilling to discuss his accomplishments? Unless of course she doubted him and was simply being polite about it. That made no sense given her earlier excitement though. He did notice that she only mentioned he “faced” a dragon. He had done more than that! His fight with the beast had been perhaps the greatest moment of his life. Never before had he been able to throw himself at an enemy so wholly, with every last ounce of himself. The dragon had done the same, and they had ended one another. His frown grew nearly into a snarl when he thought back to his men's cowardice, though remembrance of the one who was loyal eased his bitterness till he relaxed. What he heard next however caused him to arch an eyebrow. "So when do you think we should begin scouting? ... If that's what you've decided on, anyway. I suppose it makes more sense to scout at night. That's when most magi tend to go out, from the information I've been told." Had she found information on their foes locations so quickly? He began to turn around. He knew the capabilities of these modern technologies, and not all of them pleased him. But if these “computers” could find knowledge so quickly- He finished turning and noticed the laptop sitting idly on the table. Oh. Of course, the girl probably had no idea what he had been talking about. He may still have the body of a young man, but the King of Warriors nearly swore that the long years of his life had managed to cause him to start turning senile. “If that is when our enemies present themselves then that is when we must go. However, before we begin running around the city it would be wise to have an idea of where to begin our search. I appreciate your confidence in my senses girl, but even I cannot pick up on the prana of an enemy from across great distances.” He pointed to the folded computer. “Does that device not possess the ability to collect reports from all around the city? If our enemies are active surely there battles have not gone unnoticed. We can find where they have taken place, and search from there. Or is this knowledge I have from the Grail about this thing incorrect?” He made a mental note to be clearer with the girl from now on. While she had seemed eager and collected it was obvious he had over estimated her battle experience. He had assumed she would realize that when he spoke of using the men under one's command that he was in fact talking about one's own tools. |
