Matt listened to her words as he ate the cereal. So the city was a network of leylines. It would be best to capture them all, but even control of a single leyline would provide a great advantage in magical war. Assuming the one in the forest was unoccupied, that would be a fantastic place to start. Remote and easy to defend without the hazard of being noticed.

"Alright, we should capture the forest immediately. No doubt another Magus will have the same idea as us, so the sooner we enact this the less likely we'll have to engage in a direct battle."

Matt finished his meal, dropping the bowl into the sink. As Caster began looking for something to eat Matt walked to the doorway, hoping to get started as soon as possible. Caster's words were true, patience would bring them success, but in the mean time many preparations could be made to increase the likelihood of success when the time came.

"Even besides that there is much to be done. If this house is our base we must ensure it's well defended. If you can secure that leyline, I'll set up in case we are attacked."

Matt decided not to talk about the dream, fearing the witch's response. Were it only a dream being concerned by it would only make him seem even more childish; were it something more... It would be best for Caster to reveal anything herself. Matt walked towards the back entrance.

He stepped into the back yard to find something odd happened over night. To the untrained eye nothing seemed any different, but the magical energy seemed different than the night before. He walked to the edge of the yard and reached out across the fence. There was no pain, but a strong magical energy acted like an invisible barrier which would undoubtedly keep enemies away.

So Caster had already prepared the mansion. Returning to the kitchen, Matt sat at the table facing the Servant. "I see you're one step ahead of me. In that case, what can I do to help you?" Matt stared at the woman like a soldier to his general, awaiting orders.

"I see you're one step ahead of me. In that case, what can I do to help you?"
Skuld felt a distinct twinge of irritation as her Master spoke. She had very little use for her Master beyond his basic functions, and now it seemed he was the kind who would insist upon trying to contribute. It meant she would have to find some way to keep him out of trouble.
"What can you do? I have no need of your magecraft, and your mortal strength is paltry and slow."
Bitterly she reflected on the hordes of worthy thralls who were waiting for her, buried under the snows which did not yet exist in this world. Only a few more hours and she could have them rising under her command... Instead she was here playing nursemaid to this mortal.
Well, that was not entirely true, there were yet things she needed to do here and this outpost would certainly serve its purpose. Yes... she could imagine a few uses for this man, paltry as they might be...

"What can you do? I have no need of your magecraft, and your mortal strength is paltry and slow."

Matt's eye twitched, his heart jumped. Why did she insist upon his uselessness? Were he not a strong enough Master, not wise enough? Matt hung his head, then lifted it to it's former position, staring directly into Caster's face.

"Alright. If I can't help you in any way I may as well go to the city. While my magic may be 'paltry' compared to your own, I'll do no good if I have to rely on to protect me."

Matt turned as if to leave. His magecraft didn't actually require anything he could get from the city, but he couldn't just sit in the house all day. Matt paused, giving his Servant a chance to speak.

Skuld bristled at her Masters snub, and her voice rose to almost a shout. "Don't be a fool! You wont increase your usefulness to me by getting killed! I just said that it was patience which would win this war!"

Scolding herself for her outburst, Skuld forced herself to calm down. While impoverished and seemingly slow witted her Master seemed to possess a decent amount of prana, meaning that he probably had some skill as a magi. She had probably wounded his petty pride with her words, and now he was attempting to recover his dignity. Were she still Queen she would have crushed this jester in an instant for wasting her time, but now, as loath as she was to admit it she did need him. For now. And she could not establish a trust with him this way...

Cooling her temper somewhat she dematerialized and reformed in front of the door, imposing herself between her master and the exit. Forcing herself to smile and bow somewhat apologetically she laid a slender hand on his shoulder. "Don't fear master, be patient. I apologies if this Servant has slighted you, I'm sure your power is very great, but I can make it greater. Only don't go down the street unattended, is all I request of my lord."

"Don't be a fool! You won’t increase your usefulness to me by getting killed! I just said that it was patience which would win this war!"

Infuriated at his statement, Caster screamed at the man. Matt jumped back, surprised at her rage, beginning to plan a quick escape if it came to that. Caster suddenly disappeared, reappearing between him and the door. She bowed, laying a hand on Matt’s arm as if to comfort him.

"Don't fear master, be patient. I apologies if this Servant has slighted you, I'm sure your power is very great, but I can make it greater. Only don't go down the street unattended, is all I request of my lord."

The Servant smiled apologetically but Matt still had a sense of danger. She could easily constrain him if he disobeyed; her grip on his shoulder only supported this theory. Having seen her previous hastiness towards violence, Matt could only assume she would do so if it came to that. Yet she still bothered with the formality of smiling

Matt smiled back. ”No, it’s my fault. You’re clearly the more experienced when it comes to matters like this; I shouldn’t disobey you.” Matt returned to the kitchen. ”If you think waiting is the best direction, I will do as you say.” He watched his Servant, attempting to judge her reaction.

Skuld blinked at her masters reply, her eyes narrowing once again as he turned to make his way to the kitchen. She had expected him to either suck up her flattery and inquire after the power she had promised to give him, or conceded to her logic and grudgingly give in. Instead the strange man had apologized to her before saying that he should not disobey her. A string of conflicting emotions warred inside Caster for a moment. The man was obviously a craven, no man possessing a warriors spirit would submit so easily and then give their opponent a boot licking on top of it all. It was the spirit of a slave rather than a magus that this man displayed.
This would be good for her, it would mean that he would be easily swayed to her desires. At the same time however she rebelled against it. This man possessed neither wealth nor prowess as a warrior. She had hoped that he would possess some skill as a Magus as sometimes happened with certain variety's of hedge magi, but now that he had dodged her question regarding his capability's it was unlikely that he possessed any skill there either.

Briefly her minds eye flickered back to her old teachers, the withered Norns and Elvish tutors who had schooled her so long ago. They had been wrinkled and frail wretches every one, beset with age, their eyes rheumy and opaque from staring into the future, their bodies wasted from centuries of herbal drugs and rotten magecrafts. Even they however had know the meaning of strength. Eying this young man, with the body of a warrior and the spirit of a coward she reached a swift conclusion: It was not befitting that someone such as her would have a boot liking spittle for a Master. Not in the long run at least. She would need to find a new master to join with once this fool had expended his usefulness.
Nodding slightly to herself she replaced her smile as her Master turned around and glided over to him.

"Very wise of you Master. In the meantime I shall complete several thing that I have been working on. With my magics we will soon know which way the wind blows and will be able to venture forth with impunity."

Matt’s false smile grew ever so slightly. ”Alright. Maybe I’ll practice my meditation or work in that garden some more.” He stood and walked towards the door as if to enter the back yard. ”I have to set up my bounded field as well, if this will be our permanent station. Yes that’s what I’ll do.” Matt kept up his smile, though now it was probably unnecessary.

”I’ll just be wandering the yard, setting it up. I assume it won’t interfere with your magecraft.” The awkward smile kept up as Matt walked out the back door, already preparing to flee the premise.

Skuld studied he Masters smiling face for a moment longer before giving a small curtsy and gliding out of the room. She found his complacent expression rather sickening, but cravens were cravens and for now it was better to entertain the man. Whatever bounded field he was going to set up could in fact be good opportunity for her to keep him occupied. She could probably sabotage it in a way that would have him spending many fruitless hours attempting to fix it while she got the real work done. It was an okay plan, but when she thought about it more she found that it was rather roundabout. It would be much more simple to just drug him into a vegetative state... yess that would do nicely... at least for now.
Gliding down the hall she watched carefully until she was sure he was not looking and slipped though the door she had concealed with illusions earlier that day.
Slipping down the stairs like a ghost she made her way back to her workbench and examined the half formed enchantment which she has left only a few moments ago. The base structure had been formed, but the majority of the magic required for its completion had yet to be laid out. Picking it up carefully she ran her fingers over it and began once more...

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Time: 9:00 AM.

Placing the finished project down on her workbench Skuld allowed herself a thin smile as she examined the rather crude looking amulet. It did indeed feel good to work again and with this particularly useful trinket she would have much less to worry about on one front at least.
Grasping its thin leather strap Skuld made her way back up. It was merely a trifle, something that she would probably give to her next master once she had disposed of this one, but at least Matt could work as a test subject of sorts for her new trinket...

Matt ran through the city, away from the house, anywhere so long as it was away from that Servant. He wanted to help her, but after that dream… She was just too dangerous, too unpredictable. Maybe the entire war was a bad choice. He just had to get away, if only too think things over. Matt darted between bushes, between trees, until he came to a place where the forest was too thick.

The moment Skuld emerged from her workshop she sensed something was out of place. The faint signature of power that her Master carried with him was absent from the house and the sounding area. It took only a few moments to confirm, Skuld flying upstairs to check each room before inspecting the garden.

When it dawned upon her that her Master really had left Skuld was aware of a sudden swelling sensation in her head and before she knew it she had smashed one of the elegant dining room chairs. Wheeling around she swept back down to the basement. Standing before her fire pit she felt suddenly calm, calmer than she had even before the discovery of her Masters little rebellion. If her Master had left without her consent then the man had some backbone that she had not accounted for. Or least he was just a very great fool. It remained to be seen which.

And more than most other Servants Skuld had a way to see.

Bending over the fire pit of her workshop Skuld knelt down and kindled a small blaze, feeding it for several minuets until it was crackling fire. Bending down, Skuld's robe brushed the floor and pool around her legs as she knelt to the floor and bent over the fire, running her fingers over the tips of the flame...

Mist and time bent inside of the witches eyes as she pored her soul into the flame, her mind warping as it reached out to touch the Other where the lines of time space and perception blurred and tangled. Time became lost as she stared into the flames, the room around her becoming grey and pointless. If she had been asked how long she stared at the flames then she would have been unable to answer.

But then... yes there it was. As her mind became detached from reality the flames flickered and flickered, shifting and swirling until somehow they had become figures. It was so subtle that it was impossible to say where the shapes had begun and fire ended.

She saw a figure, it was her Master it could be no doubt, but somehow in the dancing flames he looked stronger, more powerful than he looked in person. Skuld frowned. The flames could reveal things that even her own judgements and perceptions could miss, and if this was how he appeared in the fire then perhaps she had underestimated the strange man...
Wherever he was exactly he was running, running quite swiftly in fact. Her frown deepened as her minds eye shifted reveling his location in the city. He was making a B line track away from the house, almost as though he was fleeing. But fleeing from what? What in the wide world had possessed him to simply abandon the protections that she had established? Unless, could it be?
Skuld could have almost laughed at the thought but it would have broken her trance. She had not thought that the fool had it in him, but it was quite possible that he had undertaken some kind of misguided quest to prove himself.
Yes... that could certainly be it especially after she had belittled his prowess in front of him.

Banishing the visions from her mind Skuld stood, swaying slightly as her consciousness returned to the mundane world. Breaking trance was always bothersome. Magecraft was preformed by changing the state of ones mind and piercing the veil of space and time was mentally taxing even to her.

But the issue still stood: How to respond. This interruption was irritating and pointless at least, potentially disastrous to her at worst. She had half a mind to assume spirit form, run him down and return him to the house by force. The command Spells could be troublesome, but she felt confidant that she could subdue him simply enough without allowing him the chance to deploy them if it came to it. And besides the man was notoriously timid in her presence it seemed. Once she got back a curse, a few rounds of hypnotism and a few choice drugs could render him into a drooling vegetable ending her Master problems forever.

But yet... something prevented her. She knew the right way to deal with this, but somehow... it left a bad flavor in her mouth. Yes, that was the way to put it. A bad flavor. Even if it was only a foolish endeavor that this man was making something about it was very appealing to her. It seemed like something her brother would have done Something a.... Hero.... would have done.

All at once Skuld knew what she was going to do. It would be risky, but the thought of it sent a pleasant chill up her spine. Besides, if he failed and got himself killed then with the amount of prana she still had she could probably last long enough to find another Master. Probably...
