"Do you like it?" Bending down to adjust the collar of the heavy jacket, Lissa smiled brightly for the benefit of the toddler, Lissa was met only with a very solemn look from pale blue eyes. Rissa wasn't quite sure whether she liked Galvalin Weyr, or the new people, or the change in direction. She knew her mother was big on telling the truth though, so she remained silent, merely staring at Lissa until she sighed. Lissa was aware Rissa was a slow to change child, that quick adjustments were not something she liked, or wanted. Tugging again at the collar, Lissa straightened up from her crouch, tucking Rissa's hand into hers. She wasn't really sure if Rissa would ever like Galvalin, but she did. There were no past mistakes to breathe down her neck every time she turned the corner. So basically, there was no P'sin. She'd fallen head over heels with that no-good... She'd been a dim-glow. An utter dim-glow. She knew better than to be swept off her feet with charming smiles and flirting gestures, but no, of course not, she'd been swept along and now look where she was. Seventeen.

With an adorable two-turn old daughter at her side, admittedly. At first, Lissa had hated the idea of motherhood, she swore, if any one person complained about the struggle of being a young mother, she was going to whack them over the back of the head. Try being fifteen and a new mother, knuckle head. Still, she couldn't ask for a greater joy than waching Rissa carefully pick her way along the bank of the weyrlake. When she slipped, her other hand reached up to clasp the other side of Lissa's hand until she was more balanced. Then she'd let go, but not entirely. She wasn't comfortable in this new place, not comfortable enough to leave her mother to run ahead. That and they were near water, Rissa didn't trust water very much.
"You'll get used to it, and there'll be other people to meet."
"No want." Rissa finally said, kicking her small boots in the dirt under her feet, Lissa wasn't sure if she meant she didn't want to get used to it, or didn't want to meet new people. Either way, it was probably best to ignore it. Tugging easily on the small girl's hand, Lissa lifted her slightly off the ground, making the toddler laugh happily.
"You'll love it here, look there's so much room to run." That was probably because it was still early in the morning, enough so that the morning chill had meant the need for Rissa's knee length coat that she was now plucking at with one hand.

"Come on, Rissa. Where's my happy baby smile?" Lissa tried coaxing, letting her hand run through the girl's blonde curls, Rissa turned her head up, allowing a tiny smile to lighten the somber look on her sunny face.
"That's better!" Grinning at her, Lissa released her hand, and the toddler took off.
"Catch me, mummy. Catch me." She laughed back at her, and Lissa ran after her, maybe it wouldn't be as long before Rissa liked her new home.

Wind whipped violently at the form that was N'kar as he and His tore through the skies. Rhiunth's long wings were pulled in close to his body, nose pointed downward in a dive. The rider let his eyes close and allowed the feeling to sink in for a moment until the brown's wings snapped open once more and the pair twisted upward. The rush never ceased to fill him with a certain thrill, even as long as they had been together. Rhiunth climbed steadily, each powerful downstroke of his wings taking them higher into the skies until he felt they had reached sufficient height. A twisting loop backward and a short corkscrew downward again and N'kar tapped lightly on Rhiunth's neck.

Alright Rhiunth, that's enough for now. Go ahead and level us out. N'kar commanded, bracing himself as the dragon pulled up sharply again. Rhiunth slowed down considerably as they came level with the ground below, allowing for a good look at the Weyr and bowl spread beneath them. The rider sighed, gazing out at it all. Thoughts of their old Weyr came to mind. Most were fond, a few kind of sour, but all reminiscent. It had been a good place full of good people, but it had been time for them to move on. N'kar was by no means upset that he had left, nor was he upset that Galvalin was the Weyr to which they had moved. It was simply hard to forget about the place that you had spent your entire life living in. A snort from Rhiunth shook him from his thoughts.

'N'kar Mine, are you sad to be here?' the brown inquired.
Not at all Rhiunth. I was just thinking is all. N'kar couldn't help but laugh at his partner. I love it here, and I am glad to be a part of it. Don't you worry you silly wherry. You like it here, don't you?

Rhiunth snorted again. 'I love it here as well. I love the Weyr, I love the people. I love the bowl, but right now I mostly love the water! N'kar Mine, we can swim, yes?' Rhiunth's voice was excited and eager. Another chuckled escaped N'kar's mouth.
Yes Rhiunth. We can swim.

The dragon bugled happily as he began a slow spiraling descent toward the lake. Lazy circles downward to the ground. It was a minute or so later as they were nearing the water that Rhiunth spoke again.
'There are people at the lake. A hatchling!' the brown informed. N'kar was confused for a moment. Hatchling? How on all of Pern could there be a hatchling at the lake? There hadn't been a hathing, and no hatchling would be able to come here from another Weyr. The words baffled N'kar until the pair touched down not far from the two girls near the lake and the rider noticed the toddler. Hatchling...

Hoping that they hadn't startled the girls, N'kar jumped down and waved a greeting.
"Hello there. I'm sorry if we intruded on anything." He called to them. Rhiunth danced about eagerly from foot to foot, waiting to see what happened.
"You don't mind to much, do you?"
Rhiunth's gaze moved backand forth from the two girls not so far away to the water and back.

Startled might have been a mild word to describe Rissa’s surprise at seeing the dragon. She wasn’t afraid, really, just shocked enough to skid to a halt and run behind her mother’s legs. She certainly wasn’t used to strange dragons just dropping in out of the sky and the brown was much, much bigger than what she was used to. Rissa might have been accustomed to being the smaller one in a group, but this… This was stretching that a little bit. Relaxing a little bit as her mother’s hand came to rest on the top of her head, Rissa managed a small smile for the benefit of the man, he seemed nice enough really. She didn’t move from her mother’s shadow though, not entirely confident that the brown wouldn’t manage to squish her or something equally awful.

Lissa was less surprised than the two-turn old clinging to her leg; she’d seen the brown circling, and he’d obviously intended to land. That was on account of the dragon, on the account of the rider, she was more surprised than Rissa could hope to be. She hadn’t expected him to talk to them. As a rule, Lissa was wary of brown riders, not for any logical reason other than a case of a rotten apple that she’d been lucky to pick, but her sunny nature won over the wariness and she smiled easily, shaking her head in an attempt to put him more at ease.
“Not at all, we were just playing. Weren’t we?” Glancing down at Rissa, Lissa nudged her slightly, but the man still only got a slight nod before the girl stuck her thumb in her mouth. The action was more than a slightly frustrating one for Lissa, she’d just gotten the thumb to stay away from her mouth, before the move. Shame it wouldn’t stay that way.
“Thumb out of your mouth, Rissa.”
“No. Thumb in mouth.” The words were clear enough, but Lissa knew her daughter well enough to know that if she told Rissa she could understand her perfectly, she’d never get the thumb out.
“I can’t understand you, Rissa. And neither can the dragonrider. If you want to talk, take your thumb out of your mouth.” Evidently, she didn’t want to talk because the thumb stayed in her mouth. Sighing softly, Lissa turned her gaze back to the dragonrider, searching her mind for something else to say.

Social conversations were so much harder with strangers, Lissa was a chatty young woman, but she wasn’t one to simply blabber on without any direction of speech. It was easier when she was working, on shift she could simply ask them questions about the injury, how it was acquired and so on, so forth. Back ‘home’, Rissa would have been a big help, she would have been full of questions about the large brown, and the rider, and would have given them both something to focus on. Glancing down when Rissa moved slightly, head peeking out from around her knees, Lissa was relieved to see her thumb was no longer in her mouth, hovering near it, but not in it.
“Wha’s his name?” Pointing at the large dragon with all the politeness of any toddler, Rissa’s blue eyes were now fixed on the brown dragon. That at least, was a step forward. Rissa was perhaps more clear in voice than most children her own age, and sometimes the ease at which she spoke startled Lissa too, but clearly, Rissa wasn’t about to be put off by her mother’s silence. Pushing against Lissa’s legs, Rissa forced her mother to take a few steps forward, pointing at the dragon again.
“Wha’s his name? Please?”

A slight frown formed on N'kar's face for a moment when the youngest of the girls clung to the older. He was a little annoyed at Rhiunth for being so rude as to drop down on them like he had, but he supposed there wasn't much he could do about it now. A little scolding maybe later, but he doubted much would come of it by then. The little girl looked a bit shook up, he assumed because of Rhiunth's size. He couldn't blame her, really. Rhiunth was pretty big as far as dragons go, being a brown and all. N'kar's own father was a brownrider as well so he had grown up around dragons, but he had no idea whether or not she had spent much time around them. For all he knew, they could have only just arrived at Galvalin yesterday.

The response from the older of the girls shook the rider from his thoughts and dragged his attention to her. Relief washed over his face when she said that he hadn't disturbed them.
"Well I'm glad to hear that then." That was really the last thing he had wanted. He smiled a kind acknowledgment and waited awkwardly a moment as he thought of what to do next. N'kar was generally a quiet man, even somewhat shy sometimes, and he didn't often waltz straight into conversation like this. In fact, if Rhiunth hadn't dropped him into this situation he likely would have given them a kind nod from afar and gone about his business. But no. He just wasn't that lucky this time around.

In the moments that followed, as everyone stood there rather quietly, N'kar found himself drawn to the older girl's face for some reason. Something about it held his attention. It wasn't that she was particularly attractive, and N'kar wasn't usually one to take much notice of that kind of thing anyway. No, but there was something about her that seemed... Interesting. Behind him, Rhiunth had realized that it might be a while before he actually made it into the water, so he decided to stop fidgeting and instead entertain his curiousity.

Slowly, (and much like the young girl who was slowly approaching them now) the large brown moved closer to them, head cocked slightly with his intention to investigate. Then came a voice from the girl, a question, and N'kar was pleased to have something to talk about. He smiled warmly at the girl, hoping, for some odd reason, to get her to warm up to him.
"This is my Rhiunth." He said, patting the brown's hide lovingly. "And he would like to know the same of you." the man added, with an accompanying snort in agreement from Rhiunth.
"He would very much like to know your name as well."

Lissa was well used to awkward silences, amoung her own age group, she was a bit of an outcast, as a young mother. Grils her age didn't understand the hardships of an all nighter, or waking up with a teethin child, or the struggles of being fair and firm, they didn't understand that, because they didn't have to. Women who did understand, were often older than she was, and more understanding of Rissa, but more disaproving of Lissa. She wasn't enjoying the rider's interest either, for whatever reason it was. She could feel her cheeks heating up slightly and was more than a little relieved when Rissa drew the attention back to her with her simple, curious question.

Unlike most toddlers, after she'd gotten over the initial fright of something that much larger than she was, her natural curiousity drove her to find out more about this creature. She'd always liked Flitts, and to her, dragons were simply a large flitter, so whent he brown's name was delivered, she offered his rider a sunny smile. Lissa knew she'd always had trouble with draconic names, simply because they were often long and complicated, adn though Rhiunth was nice by draconic standards, Rissa still wrinkled her nose in response to attempting to pronounce his name.
"Rhi..un... th... Rhi... Rhi... Rhi!" From that moment ont he brown would forever be 'Rhi' to the toddler, as Rissa swiftly gave up on the rest of his name. In her mind, she could pronounce most if not all of it, and for that she'd be happy.
"Cadrissa." Lissa responded for her daughter, nodding down at her, Rissa instantly wrinkled her nose slightly,
"Rissa. I's Rissa." She corrected, smiling again at the brown rider.

"I pat him? I pat him, please?" Seeing the brown rider do so, the little girl stretched her hand out curiously, Rissa tilted her head to add to her appeal.

N'kar could only chuckle at the toddler's new dubbing of his dragon. Rhi. It was as much as could be expected from children so young a child he supposed, and Rhiunth apparently didn't mind. The brown was far more interested in what was going on than what he was being called, not that he would have cared much under normal circumstances. He was sitting back, eyes whirling green with curiousity. N'kar knew that Rhiunth enjoyed the company of younger dragons due to his somewhat more youthful personality. It only seemed fitting that he would take interest in meeting new people, odd as that was for some dragons, because he was normally so curious. The dragon merely pulled back his lips in a draconic immitation of a smile. His amusement was almost funny in itself.

"Rissa eh? You're quite the sweet young lady, Rissa." N'kar returned the girl's smile. "Are you normally more talkative than your sister?" The rider assumed this was their relation. It would be a bit of a difference in age, for sure, but he had no reason to know that the relationship they shared was a different one.

Looking over his shoulder, N'kar pretended to think carefully about whether or not it was a good idea for the girl to pet Rhiunth.
You don't mind, do you? He didn't think Rhiunth would mind at all, but he checked just to be sure.
'Of course not. She is welcome to pet me if she wants.' Rhiunth assured gladly.
At last N'kar turned back, a little half smile on his face. "I don't see why not." He said, stepping aside. "Rhiunth is a nice dragon."

Rissa's smile only grew at his calling ehr sweet, and despite her misgivings, Lissa smiled too. Like any mother she loved hearing praise about her daughter, and the fact that she was being called sweet in such a short time... Well at least she was getting along with the rider. If Rissa found joy in the dragons, it would make it so much easier in the long run, simply because Rissa would actually like her new home. At the brown rider's question, the toddler paused mid step, the smile slipping as her blue eyes clouded in confusion. Sister? Turning her head to look at Lissa again, the toddler pursed her lips slightly, before her expression cleared.
"Mama? Mama talks lots too." She assumed it was Mama he was reffering too, and giving him the answer, she trotted forward more confidently towards the dragon, hand outstretched.

"Nice dragon! Rhi! Pet please." Smiling up at him, the girl was completely unafraid of the creature that was so massively bigger than she was, and yet, Lissa couldn't help following her at a slight distance. Close enough that if the creature got annoyed, she could grab her, but far enough that the girl felt comfortable and not shadowed. Avoiding meeting the dragonrider's gaze, Lissa kept her eyes on the brown, watching him curiously and perhaps even a little enviously, though she would never have admitted it. Had it not been for Rissa, perhaps she might have been a candidate. Maybe, but the evny was only passing. After all, she had her journeywoman knots in healing and a smart, bright girl, what more could she want from life really?
"He's a fine dragon." Lissa finally spoke, willing the colour to fade from her cheeks as she turned her head to look at the brown rider squarely,
"He seems well mannered too, but if Rissa annoys him, please let me know."

Sticking her tongue out at her mother at the words 'annoy him', Rissa quickly went back to chattering to the brown, telling him about her old home, as much as she could remember, and missing it. She told him of Mama and all the silly things they did, all the while letting her small hand very gently pat him.
"I not annoy him. Rhi and Rissa friends now." She told them both, nodding her head slightly and grinning at the dragon, "Okay Rhi?"

N'kar's eyebrows raised a little as a look of slight surprise crossed his face for a moment. Mama? She didn't look that old. At least, not old enough for most to have a daughter old enough to be walking and speaking as Rissa was. That wasn't to say it was impossible. Of course not. Just because it wasn't normal didn't mean it didn't happen. N'kar just hadn't expected that. He smiled at them once more, but secretly he was beginning to worry that that 'sister' comment may have given the wrong impression than he had intended. A little embarrassed, he looked away from the girls, trying to save himself from making an even bigger idiot of himself so soon.

"So she does, soes she?" the rider managed to say after regaining compossure once more. A hint of a different tone made its way into his voice then, something almost vaguely teasing.
"You know, Mama hasn't given me her name yet. I'd hate to think maybe I'd done something wrong." He said, sounding almost playfully hurt now. N'kar kind of liked talking to Rissa, with her childlike questions and honesty, but it seemed that her mother wasn't all that fond of them. He could see that she was keeping her gaze more directed at Rhiunth than himself and wondered why that was. Maybe sticking around had been a bad idea. He probably should have just apologized when Rhiunth had landed here and gone someplace else with the large brown.
Too late for that now...

A fond smile crossed N'kar's lips then when Rissa's mother complimented his dragon. And she had even looked at him when she said it too. That was some better, he thought. He may not have a child as she did, but he too felt a sort of pride when someone had a kind word or two about Rhiunth.
"Rissa annoy Rhiunth? I would hardly worry about that. That huge wherry behind still acts like a weyrling himself sometimes. He's never been one to be bothered by other people." N'kar assured. "But if for whatever reason she does bother him, I'll be sure to let you know."

Rhiunth on the other hand was hardly paying attention to the older two of the group. Instead, all of his attention was focused toward Rissa as the young girl told him her stories. He listened intently, often nodding or twitching in response. The large brown even inched a little closer to Rissa and leaned into her hand. Yes, he was just fine with being friends with her. She almost even reminded him of himself in a weird way. At least as much as a young girl could remind a large brown dragon of himself. Friends. Adding emphasis and agreement to Rissa's statement, Rhiunth nodded his large head before nosing her lightly, much to N'kar's amusement.

The rider couldn't help but chuckle at his dragon. "Rhi agrees."

If anything, Lissa's cheeks burned hotter at the slight look of surprise, but she didn't give any other indication that she was embarrased. Yes, she was normally more talkative, but those times were when she had her craft to fall back on or some other safety net that made her feel more secure in conversation. Admittedly, her discomfort with N'kar stemmed from prejudice, and his brown, but now she was relaxing she knew it wouldn't hold out. She was predisposed to dislike brown riders, but not all of them were P'sin. In fact, looking at N'kar there was no comparison. Where P'sin had been blonde with blue eyes, he was darker, dark hair and eyes, and he was marginally shorter. From where she was, Lissa wouldn't have placed him above average height and he waqs uncomfortable. That was the big thing, P'sin had been a charmer, easy smiles and charming comments, N'kar was almost.. Shy.

"I'm Carlissa. Most people just call me Lissa though." Smiling with more ease now, Lissa's eyes sparled slightly at the tease. Teasing she was used to, she had a brother that made her childhood a mess of games and teasing, and it was relaxing. Rissa was delighted with her new friend, and if nothing else, that was a reason for Lissa to be grateful to the brown rider. The wingsecond, she corrected herself, glancing at his knots for the first time, his reassurance about Rhiunth actually got her to laugh and she shook her head slightly,
"Yes, but Rissa's only two. Even the most patient of brown's can't be expected to deal with a toddler."

Rissa laugyhed delightedly as he leaned closer to her, and her eyes sparkled wtih enjoyment as Lissa bent to help her lightly scratch him, helping her not to press too hard. She liked the idea of having Rhi as her friend, though she knew she probably wouldn't see him very much since Mama was often very busy.
"Mama, what 'agrees' mean?" She asked, looking back at Lissa as she did so,
"It means he wants to be friends too."
"Really? Yay!" Happily returning her hand to the brown, there was no chance the toddler was planning on moving anytime soon, too engrossed in her new friend to even pay any more attention to Lissa.

Now they were getting somewhere, N'kar felt. Lissa seemed to be warming up to them, at least a little. But even that was better than a few minutes ago. The rider grinned widely.
"Pleased to meet you Lissa." This was going better than usual. Normally his own awkward personality would have ambushed a conversation similar to this, or he would have kept it simple and more formal, going back about his business when it was over. Not this time though. This time he actually enjoyed the conversation. Or at least, he was enjoying what little of it they'd had. Then he began to wonder just why Lissa seemed the way she had. Not that it was any of his business. If she wanted to tell him she would, but it was hardly his place to say anything about it when they'd only barely just met. Instead, the rider began searching his mind for something else to learn a little more about these new people.

"Well, I suppose that's true enough." N'kar admitted. "But Rhiunth really seems to like her so I wouldn't be too worried." The rider reached back one more to scratch Rhiunth's side, but the large brown hardly responded at all to his rider's touch. Rhiunth really did like Rissa. She was a very sweet little girl, not that the dragon knew many little girls or even too many people other than his rider. At least not at Galvalin. N'kar laughed at his dragon. All of this was his fault. And that thought earned him a self-satisfied mental poke from his companion.

Rhiunth liked Rissa. She obviously liked him, and Rhiunth being the way he was they got along just fine. Playfully, the dragon blew a stream of air in her direction, being carefulnot to blow too hard. For a dragon his size it was barely anything at all. He wanted to play with her, but N'kar had to remind him that Rissa was only a little girl of two turns and that being a large brown dragon would make it hard to play with her at all.

'She could go for a ride maybe?' N'kar mentally rolled his eyes.
We'll see. N'kar replied. Lissa might not let you though, you know
'Lissa can come too.' Rhiunth thought this solution was perfect, and stopped debating it with N'kar. Happily, he went back to almost purring at Rissa and trying to entertain her.

N'kar nodded happily. "Yes, Rhi wants to be friends too. He wants to play with you too, but I think he's a little big for that." N'kar couldn't hold back the laughter at this point. The way Rissa was so engrossed with Rhiunth was just cute. He couldn't say he'd ever seen the brown playing with children before, but he definitely wasn't bad at it. Sighing and leaning back, the rider looked back to Lissa.
"I don't suppose you mind if I ask what your craft is." the rider asked brightly, trying to make friendly conversation.

"It's my pleasure." The words were said without even a hint of irony or even sarcasm, Lissa's lips tilting further into a warmer smile as she relaxed further. Really, she didn't know what she was panicking about, he was nothing like what she'd come to expect from riders and she was enjoying the semi-adult conversation. She wasn't really sure she counted in some circles, but the mature conversation that wasn't her two turn old was more than welcome in her mind. She almost expected the classic question about Rissa's father, but if he was weyrbred, he likely wouldn't ask. Parents weren't as important to the weyr, with Flights every couple of months and babies popping up everywhere, some riders didn't even know who their partner was.
"I'm a mother, it's my job to worry." Smiling again at him, Lissa laughed softly as Rissa squealed with laughter as the stream of air was blown in her direction.

"Or Rissa's too little." Lissa added, grinning down at her daughter, who wrinkled her nose right back at her. She wasn't little! She was a big, big girl now. She didn't need Mama's help to do much at all really, she could even tuck herself into bed.
"I not little. Rhi just big." She corrected, settling her gaze on the rider afterwards and watching him with all the pointed curiousity of a toddler.
"How old, Rhi?" She asked, pointing at the brown, indicating she wanted to know how old Rhiunth was. She knew vaguely that dragons were bigger than humans all the time, but she thought that Rhi was still like her, playful and young, so maybe he wasn't much bigger than she was.

"My craft?" Taken by surprise for a short moment, Lissa's fingers flew to the knots at her shoulder, checking she hadn't forgotten to attach them to her clothing. Once assured they were still there, she smiled again, a wealth of pride and happiness in the small gesture.
"Healing, I'm a healer. It's always been my calling, I think. I mean, mother said I'd always been the caring type, and well... There's nothing better than helping someone get through. A threadscore, a cold, firehead... Nothing brings pleasure like seeing a patient's eyes clear."

Lissa was quite responsible for her age, there was no doubting that. N'kar could tell that she cared very much for her daughter. A few questions formed in his mind, but they weren't really important. He wondered if she had always been that way, or if Rissa had caused her to become responsible. As far as he could tell, this was probably the way she had always been. He doubted many girls as young as she was with children as old as hers would be quite so careful. This was something that N'kar had a lot of respect for. He nodded in an understanding fashion. The wingsecond had always thought of himself as being a little more mature for his age growing up as well, at least a few turns before impressing. But then again, at that point he was a quiet child with no true genetic parental connections. Sure, he had the weyrfolk, but there was always a little something of a pure parent's touch that he had missed. He had felt that he had no choice but to grow up a little faster.
"It's good of you to worry then, and especially in a new place. I can see Rissa won't get away with much around here."

The rider turned his attention toward Rissa for a moment then, just in time to catch her infectious children's laughter. He couldn't help but laugh as well, the warm kind of laugh of an adult with little idea why he's laughing but lacks the will or ability to stop. That girl had quite a personality! N'kar cocked his head questioningly in her gaze, shooting Lissa a curious sideways glance of his own. How old was Rhiunth? It had been a few turns for sure. Nodding in the brown's direction, he responded.
"He would be 7 turns old now, but every bit as much a weyrling as he ever was." To this, Rhiunth promptly puffed himself up, obviously taking this comment as a compliment.
"You should have seen him when he was barely hatched." The rider shook his head. "I'm still surprised I was even able to handle him back then."

N'kar smiled teasingly as Lissa scrambled for her knots. She was a healer. The man couldn't agree more. She seemed like the perfect healing type. He often wondered just what he might have ended up doing is he hadn't impressed. Maybe he would have ended up one of the many faces that populated the weyr.
"I could have guessed as much." He laughed. Then a thought struck him. It wasn't anything much, ut it was something to keep the conversation going if nothing else.

"You know..." N'kar said, glancing in Rissa's an Rhiunth's direction for a moment. "My mother was a healer as well. And a fine one from what I've heard. I guess that makes me a little like Rissa." He chuckled warmly then.

A soft laugh met his comment and Lissa shook her head, no, Rissa wouldn't get away with anything here, any more than she ever had at home. She knew Rissa's tricks now, and until the little girl came up with new ones, she would be at least within eyesight.
"No, she won't. She's a trouble maker, but I've got her figured now." She wasn't really a troublemaker, really. She was just... Difficult. Many a time Lissa had been exhausted after a shift and yet still had to stay awake because Rissa was teething and uncomfortable, or because she couldn't sleep, or because she'd had too much sugar and she needed to wear it down. The worst part of it all, was knowing that Rissa would not go to anyone else. If she was handed off to a foster mother even for a few hours, the screaming started, and if anything, Lissa had to admit Rissa could scream well.

"Seven." Rissa repeated, her nose wrinkling slightly in distaste that her new friend was so much older than she was. She didn't know what a 'weyrling' was, but she assumed from the way N'kar said it, that it wasn't a good thing.
"He's no' a wey-ling." She scolded, placing her hand almost protectively against his hide and glaring at N'kar until she grew bored with showing her displeasure and went back to rubbing gently at Rhi's hide. She would have thought he'd have hard skin, but his skin was soft, just like hers.

As much as it was a conversational topic, Lissa only managed a small smile in response. He'd probably know a bit about it then, it would be nice to have someone to talk to about her craft, but at the same time, she doubted N'kar was anything like Rissa. He might have been, she didn't know.
"A little." She grinned then shrugged, "But I hardly doubt you were running around in pig-tails and skirts when you were two." She teased lightly, then allowed some seriousness to creep back into her tone,
"Being a healer is a wonderful thing. I'd like one day to go for my mastery... If not for Rissa I wouldn't have the chance for that. I'd always planned to be a candidate like my brother, but... When I was old enough to be comfortable with the idea of Flights and things... I had Riss." Reaching down to ruffle Rissa's hair, Lissa's smile for her daughter was filled with love, rathter than past regrets. She couldn't regret having Rissa, it wasn't possible.
"Were you Holdbred or Weyrbred?"

"A trouble maker? Really?" N'kar feigned surprise at Lissa's comment. Young children were usually a handful, the rider supposed, but he couldn't be entirely sure about that. It wsn't like he normally made friends with mothers and their young children very often. Then again, he didn't make friends with anyone much for that matter. He was dedicated to the work he did as a rider, and now as a wingsecond. It was a long time since he had been an overly social person, and he usually didn't make much effort to be such, with the exception of the times when Rhiunth would demand he go socialize for his own good. It was probably a good thing the brown did this though. Otherwise N'kar likely wouldn't ever do anything but work and care for his large draconic companion. The rider laughed. "But she's far too nice to be a trouble maker! Just look at the way they get along!. I wouldn't believe it." He said, still with that half teasing tone of his.

Rissa's reaction to Rhiunth's age was lost on N'kar. He could only guess as to why she had made that face. He did laugh when she became protective of the brown. Raising his hands in a show of apology, N'kar took a step back.
"Ok, ok. He's not a weyrling. I'm sorry." He said, trying not to laugh. Looking back to Lissa, he shook his head. "If I didn't know better, I'd almost think Rhiunth might forget all about me and follow her home." Of course he was only kidding. Rhiunth adored his rider like no other. N'kar just hadn't ever seen the silly beast act like this with another person before. The dragon was humming softly as Rissa was petting him. Every so often he would nuzzle her lightly with his much larger nose, his eyes whirling happily with her attention.

"No, I'm fairly sure I didn't wear pig tails or skirts when I was two." the rider laughed. "People may have wondered a bit about my parents if I did." For a moment, an image of a two-turn-old Nekarian in a skirt entered his mind. That would have been quite a sight.
"You should definitely go for mastery. I'm sure you could do it. You seem like a very determined, caring person. Mastery wouldn't be an unrealistic goal." the brownrider assured. He did wonder if she would have impressed had she been able to stand in a hatching, or if she would even have been here if she had. Maybe Rhiunth would have had a more similar-looking friend if she had, but that was all what-ifs. It hadn't happened, and this is what had.
"I was a weyrbrat." N'kar laughed in response. "My father was rider too. Brownrider, actually. I guess it must run in the family." He shrugged. "How about you, Lissa? Were you a product of weyr life, or did you hail from a hold?"

"Yes. Really." A long list of her naughtiness could have followed but alissa instead opted to shrug and smile, "But she's two, so I suppose a little rule bending is normal at that age." She couldn't remember being two herself, and her brother was older than her, but she vaguely remembered her mother saying something about the 'terrible two's' when Rissa had hit her second Turnday, Lissa hadn't believed her, because though she was a handful, Rissa was smily and playful. Unfortunately, two brought about a new development, talking.
"Well, she learned to talk for one. And she mimicked everything anyone said. I still have to be really careful about what I say around her otherwise it'll get parroted back." In a way, it was a mild warning, if N'kar wanted to be friends with Rissa, it was fine, but Lissa knew alot of riders swore, and she didn't want her daughter being one of those weyrbrats that knew the curses before she knew anything else.
"And she may be sweet now, but she's had a nap. When she's over tired.." For a moment, Lissa's face showed tiredness, the first sign of weariness that day, but she quickily brightened, grinning easily, "She's a right terror then."

"She's dissapointed he's not closer to her age." Lissa interpreted, guessing that with no small children following him around, N'kar wouldn't understand how their minds worked, then again, Rissa wasn't always on par with other weyrbrats either. The girl had an odd mind.
"Tha' right." She scolded, nodding her hed as he apologised, he was a good person, even if he was being mean. Rissa didn't often get to play with animals of any kind, so the attention she was recieving from Rhiunth was only serving to delight her further. She'd have to ask mummy to get her one, she liked Rhiunth, and she wanted a Rhi of her own.

Laughing softly, Lissa shrugged slightly, almost embarrassed at the easy manner she'd spoken about her dreams and even past ones,
"Maybe, but that'll be quite a few years off yet. I have a lot to learn, and I'm far too young." It was nice to hear it was within her grasp too, even from someone who she'd barely met. Mastery was one dream she refused to let go of any time soon.
"I'm weyrbred." Another smile, and she shrugged, "I don't think I would have suited hold life."

N'kar nodded slowly with understanding, trying to remember what it was like to be two. It was a useless attempt though. He couldn't remember back that far, though he kind of wished he could. His parents were still alive back then. Of course, being a weyrbrat, N'kar might not have ended up knowing his parents very well at all. He couldn't really be sure. Either way, they had died when he was very young and he had always thought it would have been nice to know them better. A concerned mental prod from Rhiunth caused N'kar to shake himself out of his depressing thoughts once again, and a smile quickly found its place once more on his face.
"Well, I suppose that does make sense... Speech can get someone into a lot of trouble if they use it right." The rider chuckled. Sometimes he was glad dragons almost only spoke with their riders and other dragons. It wasn't so much that what the dragon said would get him into trouble, but it was more like how much he said, and how many questions he had a tendancy to ask that might get him into trouble. N'kar had the patience to handle his curiousity, but there were some riders he had met over his lifetime that never could have taken being bonded with his crazy brown.

A slight look of curious concern crossed N'kar's face when he noticed how tired Lissa looked, but before he had a chance to say anything she was beginning to 'translate' Rissa's look for him. Understanding now, the rider looked back to the young girl.
"Oh, I see. But if Rhi was only two, I would have been too old to impress him. He would be someone else's dragon, and you might not have met him like you did." As he spoke, N'kar realized that his explanation might not even get through to Rissa. Instead, he patted Rhiunth's side.
"He's young at heart though, so I wouldn't count him too far off." He offered in hopes it would make her less disappointed. "And he wants me to tell you that he does enjoy the way you're petting him. He say's you're a natural when it comes to dealing with dragons."

"I do wish you luck when you try for it then." N'kar said, smiling reassurance. N'kar could understand being driven by something like work or duty. He had a strong work ethic as well, and he had for years. He liked to pride himself on it, but Rhiunth often said he worked too hard and need to make friends. Lissa was young, responsible, and as a mother she seemed careful and caring. He didn't see any reason in all of Pern why healing would be a problem for her, and even less of a reason for her not to be able to become a masterhealer. "I'm sure you won't have to worry about it when the time comes though."
Laughing, N'kar nodded agreement. "Isn't that the truth! I don't think I would last a week if you took Rhiunth and told me I'd have to live in a hold. Weyr life is just too ground into me, you know?"

Rissa didn't really understand the long explination, but she smiled anyway. The dragon rider was trying to be nice, she supposed, so it couldn't hurt to smile a little, she was getting tired though, and it showed in teh way she lifted one hand to rub slightly at her eyes. An action that wasn't unnoticed by her mother, though Lissa pretended to ignore it.
"Don't give her ideas." She laughed, referring to the comment about dragons. It was only half-hearted though, Rissa was far too young to even think about Standing, but that didn't mean the toddler wouldn't try if she was utterly charmed by the idea. From the smile Rissa flashed at the dragonrider though, he'd already planted a seed. Leaning down to gather her up into her arms, it showed how tired she was when Rissa didn't protest, and instead buried her head against Lissa's neck. A few hours and she needed a nap, only an hour and she'd be up again.

"I'd better get her to sleep." Murmuring the words as she rested her cheek against Rissa's curls, Lissa smiled again at N'kar. She'd enjoyed the conversation the brown-rider had provided, and it would be nice to make friends, especially if Rissa wasn't going to throw a fit everytime Lissa spoke to him as long as Rhiunth would pay attention to her. Shifting Rissa up onto her hip, Lissa shifted her grip so she could offer her hand to the brown rider, expression warm and almost grateful,
"Thanks for the conversation, N'kar. I really enjoyed meeting you. I hope to see you again, just hopefully not in the infirmary." Grinning at him as she drew back again, Lissa shrugged one shoulder asb Rissa flexed her hand once in a small wave before burying against her neck again as Lissa turned.
"See you later, N'kar."

{I couldn't think of anything else she'd say ;-; xD)

Rissa had returned a smile for his explanation, but N'kar wasn't really sure how much had actually gotten through to her. The girl was only two, afterall. Even if she had been raised in the weyr, she might not fully understand all the details of being a rider. The important part was that she had stopped scolding him, so he guessed that she had understood his intention, if nothing else. Looking away again, the rider just happened to miss Rissa's rubbing her eyes.

The brownrider laughed at Lissa's half-hearted reprimand. "Ah, but she'll be Standing age before you know it if you're not careful." He joked, trying to speak softly enough that the toddler might have missed it. He wasn't quite so sure how successful he had been however. The little girl's smile though was charming, and N'kar couldn't help but wonder where the next few turns might lead her. They were both such young girls, and in such a new and promissing place. Not, N'kar reminded himself, that he was exactly that old. He was only a few turns older than Lissa afterall, and look where he had ended up.

Seeing now how obvious it was that Rissa was tired, N'kar nodded and smiled. He didn't want to keep the girl from a nap, as much as he had actually enjoyed meeting them. They lived in the same weyr, so it wasn't like they wouldn't meet again for turns. In fact, he wouldn't be surprised if they ran into each other not too long from now. With an understanding grin, N'kar grasped Lissa's hand in a friendly shake.

"You're most welcome Lissa. It was a pleasure to meet you both." N'kar replied. He meant every word of it, too. It wasn't often that N'kar actually enjoyed being forced into conversation with people by Rhiunth, but this time he was actually grateful that the large brown had dropped him down here. He could use a good friend or two now that he was in a new weyr, and it almost looked like Lissa had needed it as well. Either way, Rhiunth was quite proud of his rider, and it showed in the colors whirling in the dragon's eyes. N'kar laughed then.
"I hope to have the pleasure again as well, though I'd hope you wouldn't make it necessary to visit the infirmary to do so!" The rider joked one final time. Behind him, Rhiunth had risen to say his goodbyes to Rissa. Stretching, the brown unfurled his oversized wings and crooned a soft farewell to his new friend before lowering himself to allow N'kar to mount.

'You are glad we met the mother one and her little one.' the brown teased his rider. And it was true, N'kar was glad, but he wouldn't admit it to Rhiunth. Not that he really needed to. The brown knew his rider. 'I cannot wait to play with the little one again. She was very pleasant.'

Almost as an after thought then, N'kar turned back to Lissa, hoping to catch her before she was too far off.
"Lissa, if it'll help at all, feel free to come find us sometime if you need an extra set of eyes for Rissa." The rider offered. "Rhiunth and I wouldn't mind. In fact, I'm sure this big wherryhide would love the company."

With a wave then, N'kar climbed up onto Rhiunth's back and gave his companion a pat indicating he was ready when he was.
