People bustled about the dining hall now as they did any other afternoon. There was nothing about it to make it any different, after all. People came and went food and drink in hand. Some took seats, some took their food and left to go back to wherever they had come from. Conversation and laughter, discussion and plotting, it all filled the air around the hall. Some floated lazily around the room to be caught by nearby ears, and some cut loudly and sharply through the rest. Unless you were nearby and actively participating in any of the conversations in particular though, it all sounded like a giant bubble of chatter in the background. From a seat off near the edge of the hall deep brown eyes rolled lazily back and again over the varied crowd gathered to eat or what have you. Slowly one way, and then back again they went, surveying the people on their way. The boy the eyes belonged to wasn't watching so carefully because he was alone or anything. No, there were a few people in seats near him that he could easily talk to if he wanted to. The problem was, he didn't really want to. He had nodded a kind hello to them when they had appeared, but that was about as far as it had gone. Instead, right now he felt much more like sitting, observing, and thinking about where he was. Valen hadn't ever really expected to be searched, and yet he had. He hadn't expected that he would be sent to a newly created weyr to stand in their first hatching, yet he had. The last few turns of his life had been a lot of things he had never thought would happen, but here he was anyway. Being the person he was, he would took it quite easily. Still, sitting here now, watching all these new people attack their food and their conversation, the boy couldn't help but think about it all again. After several more visual laps around the hall, Valen turned back toward the table and made to grab for a partially eaten meat roll he had been working at slowly since he arrived in the dining hall. Just as his hand grasped the item, a green whiz shot past his head and landed smack on the table. It was a sight the boy knew only too well, and wasn't pleased to see. He swatted angrily at the green firelizard, but not fast enough to scare her off before she snatched a bit of the meat roll and darted off again. The boy growled to himself, annoyed. WHY had he ended up with that thing? He didn't care for them at all, but she loved him like nothing else. And sure enough, it was only moments later that the small green creature was back to annoy him further. She popped back just above his head, doing a quick spiral and landing on his shoulder. Quickly, Valen jumped up from his seat and swatted at his shoulder, growling again at the further frustration with this beast that just wouldn't leave him alone. Sevet dodged his hand quite expertly, only to land again on his shoulder and settle herself down against his neck. Clearly aggravated, the boy gave up and flopped back down into the seat once again, green firelizard contently in her place. She wasn't going anywhere. |
