It had been a rather generous gift from the Southern Weyr really, once they had heard the news of the Benden Queen. A subtle message as well, but that really was something else. It wasn't as if Galvalin was out to start a war after all.
The fire had been set up near the lake in the weyrbowl, the pots above it filled with sand that had been shifted aside to reveal the surfaces of large milky white eggs that seemed to glow in the dim lighting of the new morning.
Spring was almost here, and the winds were starting to change again, for a little while, calm down slightly. Barren though the Western Continent was, it was not completely devoid of life. In sparse areas, greens did grow, small and tiny, though and gritted, though only for a few weeks in the spring.

So it was almost fitting then, when somebody's flit, though nobody could tell who's, scrambled over to the pit and started to hum. A low throaty tune that vibrated through the air and signaled a hatching.

V'tor found the site through that sound and the help of her large Brown. Areth moved slowly, inching really, as he allowed for V'tor's many steps to keep up with one of his, her hand upon his hide the entire time. He had learned patience for his rider, for he can not fault her for something she could not help after all.

Will you try for one mine love?
Perhaps. But perhaps not.
I would like for you to. I could worry a little less if there was a pair of eyes for you down in the tunnels where I cannot watch you.
Ah, you do ever so worry Areth.

Dinelle had heard about the gift that Galvalin had received from Southern. She had a way of getting around, you know. For a greenrider, she sometimes seemed to know a bit more than one would expect from her. It was anyone's guess as to how she did it. That was her way though. It shouldn't have come as much of a surprise then that she had found out about the flitter clutch that was hardening in pots near the lake.

As such, no one should have been surprised to find out that Dinelle heard about the hatching. With the tell-tale humming of a flit in her ears, the greenrider made her way over to the eggs in their pots, eager to watch the little things break their shells. It definitely wasn't a dragon hatching, but it was still fun to watch. Whether or not she intended to try and claim an egg, she hadn't decided yet, but she wanted to be there either way.

It seemed she wasn't the only one hoping to catch a glimps either, as she found out soon enough. Dinelle could see the form of a brown dragon and rider nearing the eggs. As was her usual manner, the greenrider joined them, grinning eagerly.
"Hatchings are wonderful, aren't they?" Dinelle chimed in rather suddenly. If it hadn't been for the fact that she was almost whispering she might have startled someone. "Name's Dinelle, by the way."

It was quite normal for Rissa to wander off slightly from her mother, considering they weren't near any of the lakes and therefore, she was pretty safe. Lissa didn't worry too much about the little girl, who was getting sturdier on her wobbly legs every day that she had to run about the tunnels and caverns that made up Galvalin Weyr. Lissa had heard about the gift from Southern, but not much more than a rumour, as she was too busy to listen to much more gossip than those few muttered comments of her patients. Even if there was no one ill or injured, keeping the infirmary clean and running was nearly a full time job, it wasn't uncommon for her to let Rissa take her naps on one of the beds, just so she could continue organising her life. On the other hand, Rissa was still considered a baby by most people, and so such things as Southern and rumours didn't concern her, she neither listened nor understood half of what was said and remained wrapped up in her childish bubble of innocence.

Thus, she had no idea what she'd stumbled upon when she saw the three riders standing and a dragon, watching something she couldn't see. Rather than alert her mother to her change in direction, the toddler merely wobbled over to the nearest one and clung to the rider's leg and tugged,
"Um, 'scuse me? What you doing?" She asked, turning her small face up to look at the rider, then trying to see what they were looking at. Whatever it was, it was obviously interesting, because everyone was there and if everyone was there, then it meant it was a good thing. People didn't run over just to look at bad things, that would be silly.

Her attention was stolen by the shape of the brown dragon and her light eyes lit up with delight, by far, browns were her favourite dragons,
"Wha's his name?" She asked, pointing at the brown, and then smiling brightly when the woman said her name,
"My name's Rissa! Wha's going on? I can' see, is it fun?"

Walking a yawning wasn’t always a good idea, you might catch a fly, or something small and buggy, according to her brother that was what could possibly happen, but it was early, for her at least, and she was making her way to get food, good, warm, fluffy, food. As she thought her tummy grumbled, ’hush you I’m going’ she thought as she walked across the bowl.

Normally there wasn’t much commotion in the bowl, there could be different things going on but as far as she knew there wasn’t anything planned, so when she saw a gathering of a few dragons and a few riders standing around with a, child, ‘ugh’ she though ‘do I really want to find out what’s going on over there’ she stopped and scratched her head, yawning… again! Then her feet started to move towards the grouping of people, she supposed it wouldn’t hurt, she could just sneak in and watch whatever was going on and hopefully she would be left to her own devices are she wouldn’t have to interact with people.

Upon arriving she could see just why everyone was interested in this spot this morning, flitter eggs, again the though came across, why? Why would she want to watch this? They are pets, silly, little, time consuming pets. Oh well, she supposed it would be interesting to know who to avoid for now, and there stupid pets.

Perhaps if it was some other rider, they might have been startled by the other rider's sudden words, even at that almost whisper. Yet, this particular Brownrider was a little different from other riders after all. Still, before V'tor could reply, somebody else had spoken up. By the sounds of it, somebody young. The rider didn't reply right away to that new voice's question of her bonded's name however, seeing as how the girl wasn't exactly speaking directly to her, and let's face it. V'tor wouldn't be able to tell if the weyrbrat was wearing blue from red.
Still, Areth seemed to have noticed, lowering his head to nudge his rider's shoulder. The large Brown, larger by much from the other Browns in the Weyr, matching Bronzes really, let out a low rumble of amusement.

"Right, always fun to listen to anyways," V'tor replied to Dinelle, nodding in the rider's general direction, but not really looking there. It wasn't that she was being rude or anything, but the rather masculine rider so often mistaken as a man, especially with her Brown, just really didn't see the point in trying to look over. The statement itself was already enough of an irony.
"This big fellow over here tells me you're asking for his name?" she then spoke to Rissa, head turned ever so slightly to listen carefully to the girl's responses.
"Well, this here big brute is Areth, and I'm V'tor. He asks if you want to play with him for a while," and as if in response, Areth huffed at his rider and dropped his body onto the ground, rolling over onto his side.
V'tor rolled her eyes, a habit really, "You're just a big softie aren't you?"

In the pots however, an egg rolled over on itself, and near it, another cracked open, spilling out a rather large Green. The firelizard flopped onto the heated sands rather uselessly, swirling eyes watching the group that was gathering in that suspicious manner with a half hearted screech.

It hadn't been long at all before there was a considerable group beginning to form around the flitter eggs in their own miniature hatching sands. Dinelle wasn't bothered by it but she found it amusing, the odd bunch that had found their way over, especially the girl who didn't seem much older than a hatchling herself. The greenrider peered excitedly at the eggs, wondering which one one would crack first.

Then a reply to her comment before, and Dinelle found her grin falter a moment. She glanced over in the direction of the rider who was now identifying hersef to the youngest spectator - herself? - as V'tor. It seemed Dinelle had unexpectedly found herself in the company of one of the Timers. She smiled again at the situation and nodded, though it was apparent that V'tor couldn't see it. "I see." There was a hint of a friendly laugh in her voice.

The fun began with one egg rolling over, and Dinelle directed her attention quickly back at the pots. Seemingly without warning - or without any warning that she had noticed, another egg broke open and dumped a green rather uncerimonially onto the heated sands. Well isn't she cute.

Mine, do you like flitters?
"No."
But...They are like Dragons. Does that mean you don't like me?
"No."
No, what? Which is it?
"Lyroth?"
Yes, oh wonderful mine?
"Be quiet."

Lyroth subsided, his body seeming to droop in a rather dejected manner and a small smile slowly spread across D'ane's face as he absently reached out and patted the Dragon's shoulder; a gesture intended to sooth the Dragon's wounded feelings. Lyroth promptly cheered up once more, straightening up and doing his own version of a feline's purr, leaning briefly into D'ane's hand, before his attention was once again caught by the gathering of Dragon's and people. After a mere moment's thought - Lyroth didn't tend to hesitate or linger over decisions - the Brown abruptly switched directions, almost knocking D'ane over as their paths intersected. Quick reflexes saved D'ane's rear end from unceremoniously meeting the dirt and he chuckled softly as he trailed after his thoroughly distracted Brown. Sometimes he wondered that someone hadn't put a Blue inside a Brown's hide.
"Lyroth, wait. Why don't we leave those people to it. I don't want a Flitt, and I don't want to accidentally steal someone else's, so let's go the other way..." But Lyroth was hearing none of it, already standing behind the gathered people and craning his long neck so he could see what was happening. The humming was much louder, now that D'ane was closer, and he hung towards the back of the group, although he could still see a vague impression of the pots, being as tall as he was. He also saw the little girl, Rissa...Right before Lyroth did.

"Hi Rissa," He mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck in a tell tale sign of nervousness and, after a moment, his gaze slid away from her. Lyroth crooned his own little greeting to her, before his head swiveled around so he was looking steadily at D'ane.
You need a Flitt, yes you do, mine. Much to serious, you are. You're a Da, now, and Da's play; they don't scowl all the time.
D'ane frowned at the Brown for a moment, and this time elected to answer the dragon silently.
I am not a 'Da', she's not my child. She's cute, and her mother's pretty, but...No. I'm nowhere near ready for that kind of responsibility. And you're a bad influence.
I am not a bad influence...Am I?
D'ane smiled quietly to himself, feeling like he'd won this round. With any luck, no one aside from Rissa would notice his presence, and all he'd have to would be stand and watch, which would satisfy Lyroth, at least.

"Da!" Delight filled her eyes as she heard his voice, and the toddler practically squealed with delight and threw herself at his knees. If D'ane was hoping to avoid attention, it probably would have been a good idea not to alert Rissa to his presence, for she was absolutely delighted with him being there.
"Da! Da! Da! E'eryone! Dis my Da!" Jumping up and down with excitement, the todler then turned back tot he rider she'd asked about the other brown,
"Awef?" Appropriately mangling the name she'd been offered, she nodded happily to herself that this was indeed his name she then toddled over to him, then paused halfway as something happened over near the flitters.

Squeezing through to sit at the front, Rissa's eyes instantly went wide as she turned to look at everyone,
"Baby dwagon?" She'd never seen anything so small or so beautiful, and Rissa leaned forward slightly, eyes wide and smile brightening as she got closer and stretched one hand out to touch the creature, heedless of what it could do or that she wasn't supposed to be attempting to touch them and only the fact that the green was out of reach made her stop, instead, she turned delighted eyes to Lyroth.
"Lyrri! Lyrri, is gween! Gween Lyrri!" Pushing herself up onto her feet again, she toddled over to D'ane again, promptly sitting herself down on his feet.

"Da want baby dwagon? Da get baby dwagon?" Leaning back against his legs as she spoke, Rissa's expression was one of someone high on excitement, and a child on sugar as her eyes darted from the clutch to her Da and back again for several moments.

Whatever it was that the child was saying, V'tor didn't pay any more attention to. She knew that Areth would alert her if anything actually happened that needed her attention, so instead, she turned her focus to the eggs instead. The sounds of scraping against egg shells that barely made itself heard over the sound of flitter hums signaled the hatching of another.

From another pot, the sound of egg cracking sounded, only nothing seemed to appear on any of the shells. For a moment, it seemed almost like a false warning and then the sand shifted and a small head popped out of the sands, blinking eyes as it tried its best to scramble out from the sand. As it did so, it came crashing into its own egg, crushing it and then blinking in a confused manner as it was covered in shell and egg. The other Green that had hatched before her sister let out another lazy chirp before hunger took over and it sniffed the air almost cautiously. Wings spread as it followed its instincts and took off, nearly dried claws scraping into the materials of a shirt, the Green sniffed at Guehn and snapped at her hair before spitting it out. The thing that smells like food didn't taste like food, and it was disgusting, ew. But she was ever so tired and didn't want to move, so instead, she trekked up onto the candidate's shoulder and flopped there rather uselessly and started to creel for food instead.

Meanwhile, the other Green still seemed rather confused chirping once, then twice before trying to follow its own instinct. Tried, being the important word. Its hind leg caught on the edge of the pot as wings not at all dried yet flapped rather uselessly. It landed on the ground thankfully not so far away and blinked again. Then with an almost pathetic look, it started to crawl on the ground towards Dinelle instead, sniffing at her shoes as if it were something of great interest and them promptly trying to eat it.

Dinelle heard the new arrival, and under just about any other circumstances she would have gladly introduced herself to the brownrider. She did love to talk to anyone around and wouldn't hesitate to get to know someone whenever the chance arose. Right now though, she was just that little bit more interested in the cracking eggs and the little green flitter that had been first to burst from her shell.

As she watched the first flit eye those gathered, the greenrider was able to make out the sounds of another egg cracking. At least, she thought she heard it. None of the other eggs seemed to have split though, until out of the sand in one of the pots popped a little green head. Dinelle 'awwwww'ed at the cute little thing as she tried to make her escape from the sand.

She didn't give much thought to the fact that she had broken out upside down as the other little green flit was starting to move. A silent cheer formed in her mind for the flit as she seemed to have chosen someone to attach to. With one final grin for her, Dinelle's attention went back to the second green who didn't seem to know quite what she was doing. She had tried to follow her sister's example only to fall to the gound un-gracefully. The poor thing... It was hard for the greenrider to keep from feeling bad for her, especially with that look about her. She was surprised when the little thing made her way over to her boot and then tried to eat it.

Dinelle bent and scooped up the green flit in her arms, stroking her head gently as she did so. "Now now, don't you eat my boots you. I can get you something much better to eat if you'd just hold on." She spoke the words soothingly, but the flit didn't seem to care. She writhed around, still seeming to be confused to some point and attempted to claw her way back down to her boots. Mireth's just going to love you. The greenrider laughed warmly as her newly bonded flit scrambled about in her arms.

Guehn was not really amused by the hatching of flitters, although, they were sort of cute when they were so little, still they were pets, and she didn’t care for them. So why is it that she was, lucky? Enough to find that one was going to head her way, maybe it would change her opinion of them, then again maybe she would just stay the way she was.

She jumped slightly as the little green thing darted at her, she was rather surprised to begin with, why it chose her she wouldn’t have the slightest idea, “’ey!” she flipped her hair over away from the flit so it couldn’t get to it, “none of that now!” she rolled her eyes at the thing, she understood completely what had happened, and she might as well accept the fact that, she had tempted fate, and suffered, if that was the appropriate way to put it. She grabbed a handful of meat for the thing and started to walk away, far enough away that she was certain she wouldn’t get attacked by another, fortunately for her, it seemed her flit, was going to be lazy, that would at least make taking care of it easier. Though, Guehn had to admit, a strange feeling came with the thing, a feeling she couldn’t put her figure on.

While the impression of the two Greens occurred, the pots weren't still either. The sound of chirping came as one of the eggs cracked, a webbing pattern spreading across its surface. A hind leg burst out of the shell then, followed by a tail after which the egg simply stopped breaking as a Bronze backed out of his former home. Wings squeezing past the opening, his head was the last to appear and he blinked at the new world. Unlike so many of his kin born before him, he didn't appear to seek out food right away nor make a spectacle out of himself. Instead, he turned about, plopped himself right on the still heated sands of the pot and started grooming himself instead.

He wasn't the only one to hatch however, an egg literally exploded, sending pieces of shell across the other pots. One of them hit the newly hatched Bronze who glared briefly at the Blue that appeared out of its shell before peeling it off his hide and continuing to groom himself.
His Blue brother however, merely seemed amused, hopping from one edge of the pot to another, literally perching on the rim as he jumped about, wings flapping every now and then. Then, seeing a large Brown shape, he happily chirped, bounced in place a few times, and then headed towards the large Brown shape. A tiny new born little thing, it landed atop of Lyroth's head and nipped pointlessly on the dragon's eyeridge before narrowing his eyes at D'ane and then flopping over onto his back atop the dragon's head and refusing to move. Odd little thing wasn't it?

"More! More!" Whether she was asking for more or telling D'ane there was more, was unclear and the little girl tugged lightly on D'ane's pants and pointed at the flitt perched on Lyroth's head, asking him silently if it was his with bright blue eyes looking up at him. She had told him to get a flitter, but the flitt was on Lyroth's head, not on D'ane's and she had seen the others go straight to their person's. So she was quite strictly confused by all this. It didn't matter to her though, getting to her feet and wobbling over to Lyroth.
"Lyrri, baby dwagon? Your baby dwagon, Lyrri?" She asked quietly reaching up one little hand to pat it, only to get distracted in true two turn old fashion.

Turning and wriggling closer to the clutch on hands and knees, Rissa sat directly infront of said "baby dwagons" wanting a closer look at the bronze that was just sitting there, nibbling on himself. He was such a shiny colour too. Unable to help herself, Rissa reached one hand out, stretching as far as she could without moving too far. Heedless of any danger she might be in, she whined when her fingers fell short of said flitter and pouted when she missed at a second attempt.
"Baby dwagon!" She practically crooned, flexing pudgy fingers again in another attempt. She just wanted to look really. Promise.

It didn't really seem to bother the Bronze that a child was reaching for him. In fact, he stopped cleaning himself to look almost amused and thoughtfully at her. Then with a chirp, he moved over to the edge of the pot and pressed his head over into her fingertips.
Then with a snuff, he moved, almost carefully, up her arm and onto her shoulder, nuzzling into her cheek and sending little images of moving away from the heated pots. It was not safe to be so close to a fire for the little one. Ignoring the fact that he himself was a little one as well that was.

Slowly, he reached forward and his head met her fingers. Squealing instantly with delight, the toddler wriggled back again, delighted eyes watching the little bronze move up her shoulder and giggling when his soft nose brushed against her cheek like Mama did sometimes. The images briefly confused the little girl though and she paused before following instructions and wobbling back towards D'ane, pulling the bronze from her shoulder and cradling him with surprising care in her arms before holding him out like a prize.

"Mine!" She chirped happily, then turned to show her friend to Lyrri, all which the bronze tolerated with amusement if anything,
"Mine! Mine! Mine!" She chirped again, cuddling him close to her and snuggling her face against the warm hide.
"Cadrissa!" It was very rare that the toddler heard her full name, and she jumped, eyes instantly going to her mother's expression, which was caught between worry, annoyance and confusion as she saw her daughter hugging the bronze flitt.
"Oh Faranth, please don't tell me he's-"
"Mine!" Delighted she wasn't in trouble, Rissa held the bronze out for inspection and Lissa paused, eyes darting first to D'ane and then her daughter. How could Rissa possibly hope to look after the bronze? Flitts didn't like anyone but their bonded feeding them from what she knew and bronzes were hard work, they were arrogant and fussy and how the Shard was she supposed to deal with this?

"Rissa, you need to be gentle with him." The last thing she needed was for Rissa to accidently hurt the little thing and get bitten. Did she even have food on her? Half of Rissa's lunch, a meatroll, but that wouldn't fill it up. Sighing, the young woman crouched down, producing the meatroll from a pocket and holding it out reluctantly to the bronze. As she'd thought, it snapped, though not as nastily as she would have thought, and rather risk her fingers again, she placed the food in Rissa's hand.
"Gentle, Rissa. Gentle."
"Kay! Mine!" She chirped again, holding out the roll, the bronze lightly took the roll, nibbling on it as though he hadn't been frustrated with Lissa. Sighing the healer rubbed her forehead, reaching forward to lift the girl onto her hip.
"Well, what's his name then, Rissa?"
"Mine! Name Mine! Da has one too, look Mama, Mine and Lyrri baby dwagon." This Lissa igored, giving D'ane a pained look,
"I didn't see where she'd gone, thanks for watching her for me."
