"What is this site?"

GateKeep is an online forum dedicated to play-by-post (pbp) roleplaying. While we focus primarily on pbp tabletop rpgs (games like Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, 13th Age, Star Wars Saga Edition, etc.) we do offer a section available to those people who prefer to roleplay without mechanics. We are also focused on creating a line of pbp MMOs, given enough support.

"How do you handle tabletop games on this site?"

First of all, this forum is equipped with a dice rolling function, found as a BBCode button listed next to the "table" option. This rolling function only displays results AFTER the post has been made, and prevents members from editing those posts that contain dice rolls. The rolling feature uses the usual dice notation (EX. 2d6+4) and allows most modern tabletop rpgs to be played on this site with little to no issue. In addition to our non-mechanic roleplaying section, we feature three other game sections; Unstructured Games, Structured Games, and MMOs.

"What is the difference between the Unstructured and Structured Games sections?"

The Unstructured Games section is pretty much an area where anyone can set up a game or join a game without any special considerations or rules, save for our usual anti-harassment rules and terms of use. The Structured Game section is an area where members can be assured to find quality games. In order to GM in our Structured Games section, each GM must receive certification from our staff in their respective game system, in order to guarantee our GMs are active and up to the task. We also allow GMs with experience to recommend certification for players in a particular system. Members are then able to add "experienced players only" to their games, and ensure the players joining that game are competent in the system. Rest assured however, that there are still plenty of games for beginners.

"So what is this whole play-by-post MMO thing?"

Play-by-post MMOs are a concept the staff at GateKeep have been playing around with for awhile. The benefit of tabletop rpgs has always been the ability to create scenarios that could never occur in a video game. The downside is the difficulty of getting large groups of players together. The benefit to pbp has always been the ability to allow players to play at any given game at their leisure. The downside is that with people logging in at different times, the group might be stuck lagging behind due to one player, or one player might be stuck with a slower group. Our pbp MMO format should help to remove both of those drawbacks.

The idea is that each player receives their own password protected sub-forum that only they and their RGM (Regional Game Master) has access too. The game world is divided into different regions, and each region is assigned a Regional Game Master. Each RGM has a certain number of resident slots and guest slots. You can move to a new region as long as that RGM has an open resident slot, and can visit any region with open guest slots. Players occupying a guest slot will only have access to certain features of that region, but can interact with other players. Players in the same region can join quests together, with a scaling system in place in case faster paced players want to go on their own or split up. The RGMs coordinate together under the guidance of the Global Game Master, with the GGM in charge of setting up global events and settling disputes.

This idea is still in its infancy. We will require a large number of RGMs and players to run a playtest, but we have high hopes for this new system.

"What sorts of genres do you run here?"

In all of our sections, MMOs included, we allow and encourage all genres, settings, and systems. Feel free to play what you like. In the case of the MMOs, as long as the idea is popular enough, we will run with it.

"Where can I find out more?"

You can send me a private message with any questions, contact another member of our staff, or read and/or post in our "Help" section. Hope you enjoy gaming with us.
