dowry and violence in India and the UK

Dear Gender Networkers

I made it back from India, it was touch and go at one stage when I found myself stuck in a hotel with riots around me, all part of the research process!

We collected lots of data on the link between dowry and domestic violence in Kerala India, around 70% of our 57 informants made direct links between dowry and violence, this is much higher than I was expecting, I will circulate a research summary for anyone interested once I have fully digested the data. I now want to do some research looking at the link in the UK, we know dowry is practiced and likely triggers the same kinds of violence. The Home Office is refocusing attention on harmful Cultural practices but is likely to only look at forced marriage and FGM, there are many others like dowry that need to be included.

Comments/suggestions welcome

Hope you are all having productive/and or relaxing summers.
