Not only is there a huge social cost of domestic violence but we need to know more about the economic costs to a country of domestic violence. In an article written by Marcela Valente, the average the cost of domestic violence in Latin America and the Caribbean is equivalent to 2 per cent of gross domestic product. These costs can include the criminal justice system, training for police, healthcare services and also other costs such as maintenance of shelters, medical care, social services, education and prevention. Women's organisations want the impact to become more visible, in order to demonstrate that everyone pays for domestic violence. Those who have to cover the costs of domestic violence include businesses that have to pay for reduced productivity in the workplace (and that is only when the victims are able to sustain their jobs, for many the abuse suffered means they are simply unable to work through the injuries sustained.) The perpetrator may also be unable to work due to being incarcerated. With an increase in violence against women, the costs are only going to mount. Is this increasing cost a barrier to development? I think so and through my blog I am aiming to see what others think, here's my blog: http://helencookeblog.wordpress.com what do you think? source: http://www.ipsnews.net/2009/03/latin-america-everyone-pays-for-domestic-violence/ |
