There have been quite a few AH novels about an "endless 19th century" where the great European powers just go one for centuries, but i've never felt those were very realistic. I think Gray Tide opens up a different route for the European collapse, not an indefinite postponement, and I can't even speculate what that route would look like. Would there be a Round Two? When, and between which power blocs? Which internal stresses would stop Germany from establishing an indefinite hegemony? What does the future of colonialism look like, post-Gray Tide? Sorry if these are more questions than suggestions, but there are a lost of possibilities here, i suspect... |

I think Round 2 will be another Great war, this time Germany (and allies?) vs. the TATO powers (this is a reference to something in Rip-Tide, and is meaningless if you have not yet read that story). I am hoping to write the story of that war, after I complete my current alternate Civil war project. |

Whoa! What is this War Between the States project? (And as if you can't tell where my interests lie.) I think your Tide projects were wonderful, looking forward to the same touch in whatever is in the works now. thanks |

Thanks for stopping by, Moncure. The title of the new book, which I expect to be published next year, will be If the North Had Won the Civil War. It is set in the present day (i.e., the 21st Century) in an alternate where the South did win the war (which they call the Second War of Independence). The main story concerns an underpaid History professor who comes up with a new idea (new for his timeline, that is): what if the South had lost the war? He writes a book called If the North Had Won the Civil War and my book consists of chapters about him, his friends and the modern Confederacy alternating with chapters from his book of "speculative history" (as he calls it). I will very shortly release a preview consisting of a Kindle version of the first 25,000 words or so, for comments and suggestions from readers about what they have seen so far and where they think the book should go from that point (the trash can?). I hope I can look forward to your comments, corrections and ideas for the novel. Edited by andrewjheller, Dec 7 2014, 11:25 PM.

Hey Mr. Heller, I have enjoyed reading "Gray Tide in the East" and "Tidal Effects." I see that you are working on a third book involving a war between Germany and your TATO alliance. That's fine. I am sure I would enjoy it. I had an out of the box idea I wanted to share with you. I would be interested in a book of short stories to help flesh out the finer points of your alternate timeline. What's the impact on technological progress? Nuclear research? Colonialism (as another poster mentioned)? Radicalism? I was fascinated by a point you made in your essay at the end of "Gray Tide in the East" that suggested almost every nation would be better off at the end of your GEW than at the end of our Great War. How about some stories to develop this idea further? I would like to settle into your world a bit more with Germany being the predominant power before introducing an event like a world war that seems likely to upset the existing political order. -Lex- |
