The Garlixie

This creature was quite possibly the origin of Muggle legends regarding Gargoyles and the classic image of demons. While often compared to demons these creatures are actually more closely related to pixies and share their extreme love of mischief though their larger size and magical abilities can make them quite a bit more troublesome.

Creature Rating: XXX

Build: In their natural form these creatures appear as bat winged huminoids of average height with long hair , pointed ears, small horns above each eye and, sometimes but not always, long hairless pehensile tails. They are creatures built for flight as is evident by their huge wingspans which once stretched to full length can be nearly 3 times their overall body mass. Often times when in flight they can be mistaken for giant bats. They can fold their wings very tightly against their bodies however which allows them to walk, and climb, without hinderance. A Garlixie's feet are reptilian in structure and they and it's hands are tipped with curving claws. These claws are sharp and can be used to fight with though Garlixie tend to use them more for climbing and digging rather then fighting.

Coloring: Garlixie have skin the color of grey stone with white or black claws and yellow white horns. Their hair ranges in colors but is typicaly dark brown or black in males and blond or orange red in females. The eyes can be any color but always have solid black sclera and a faint metalic tinge to the iris.

Height: 4' - 5' 6"

Endurance: Garlixie's are creatures made for flight and are able to remain in the air for lengthy periods of time unless baring a burden of some sort. If unburdened a Garlixie can stay in flight for hours. On the ground they are a bit less mobile and while they can run pretty fast and are quite agile they are more sprinters then endurance runners. They are poor fighters, preffering to run rather then face an enemy in combat.

Lifespan: 70 years give or take

Special Abilities: Garlixie have an ability that makes them harder to recoginize and often times harder to defeat. A Garlixie has the natural ability to use illusions to hide it's shape. These illusions are so perfect that unless one knows what it is they can be impossible to see past. A Garlixie can change it's appearance to mimic any thing it sees (6' tall in size or smaller) perfectly...with one fault. If a Garlixie is mimicing a person it's eyes remain the same and this can often reveal it's pressance if someone knows what to look for.

Along with this is it's unussual ability to survive not on solid food but Instead by absorbing life energy. It is not actually dangerous and it's feeding does not harm those it feeds from. Garlixie feed from the life energies produced by large groups of people living in a small area for large amounts of time. So a school or some other institute where people live in large quantities would be an ideal living space. A Garlixie's temprament is often determined by the types of energy it absorbs so whether one is evil or not can be determined by it's location. A Garlixie in a school would be more friendly while one living in an insane asylum might be more aggressive or angry.

Garlixie also have a limited ability to mind read but this is typicaly only a trageted individuals surface thoughts and emotions and only for limited amounts of time.

Culture
Clothing and Decoration: Garlixie tend to avoid wearing clothing of any kind, because of their wings and tail, and if they choose to wear anything it is only small bits of jewelry. Garlixie jewelry is ussually stolen but sometimes will have been hand made by the Garlixie themselves. Females are more likely to wear made jewelry while males tend more towards theft. With their illusionary abilites however they can make it appear as if they wear clothing of any kind they can imagine.

Fears and Inabilities: Garlixie don't seem to possess any true fears though they are very cautious and timid when dealing with humans who have been known to kill Garlixie for a variety of reasons. If one is afraid of something it is ussually only that individual and not the Garlixie as a species. One of the main flaws for a Garlixie is it's inability to change the appearnce of it's eyes and it's insatiable curiosity and love of mischeif. Despite the dangers many Garlixie walk head long into danger for sheer curiosity's sake.

Lifestyle: Garlixie are largely solitary creatures and if they choose to live in groups it is only with either a chosen mate or a family group. The larger the habitation the more Garlixie are likely to remain in the area even after maturity. They are not overly social with each other and are typicaly encountered either alone or with a mate. If encountered with a mate their is always the possibilty of a nearby nest that can contain up to 4 young. Garlixie females will fight to the death to defend their nests. Garlixie lay eggs and the young once hatched are flightless leaving them extremely vulnerable to attack. The mother leaves directly after laying her eggs, leaving them in the trusting care of her mate though she never stays away for long ammounts of time. After the eggs hatch parents take turns looking after and rearing the youngsters which remain in the nest until their wings mature at which point they remain by their mothers side whenever permitted.

Courtship Patterns: Garlixie courtship begins with the arrival of a Female. Unlike their male counterparts females remain by their mother's side until they reach full sexual maturity at which point they leave the nest on their own, driven by the desire to mate. A female in heat is identifiable by dark leopard like spots which appear along her spine and the edges of her wings. After leaving the nest a female seeks out an unattached male and seeks to take up residence within his home. If the male is accepting of her he allows her to stay, if not he will try to expell her which she may or may not fight against. Since it is the male who creates the lair she will be nesting in Males who seek to attract a females good graces will go to all lengths to make a comfortable, and pretty, living space. Security and saftey are key elements as well. Despite all of this instinctive behavior however Garlixie are still largely sentient creatures and an accepting male with a secure and comfortable lair will not always garantee that the couple will like each other or agree to mate. Emotional attatchment seems to be just as key as physical attraction.

Religion: If they have one it remains largely unknown though those kept in captivity are capable of being taught.

Other Factors
Demeanor: The majority of the Garlixie species are a goodly and fun loving race, encouraging high spirits and laughter. They are prankster and trouble makers but largely possess no malicious intentions towards those they live amongst. However because of their need to absorb life energies it is possible for a Garlixie to become twisted by consuming to much negative energy, turning it into a hatefull and angry beast. This only seems to happen to those kept in captivity and abused or those whose lairs reside within the walls of less goodly peoples. Such Garlixie are almost always killed as they become distructive and harmfull. If a Garlixie is removed from the pressance of negative energies however they quickly recover though they may become more withdrawn or depressed by the experience. It is important to note that Garlixie are sensative creatures and any change in their environment can result in an almost instant change in their demeanor.

Language: Garlixie have their own distinct language but always tend to speak the language used most often in the place they choose to live in addition.

Prejudices: Garlixie as a whole don't seem to hold many prejudices except for towards humans, particularly wizards, whome have been known to capture garlixie and breed them only to use their young for potion ingrediants. All Garlixie consider Wizards and Witches barbarians for such practices, not only with their own kind but with other magical creatures as well.

Standard Hobbies: All Garlixie are famous for their ability to cause mischeif in almost any situation, no matter how serious. Males and females almost always share the same basic interests though males find more fun in stealing things they likes while females preffer to make their own though the materials used may still be stolen.

Fighting: If attacked a Garlixie is more likely to flee then fight but if cornered they can be furocious fighters. If threatened a Garlxie's first natural response is to hiss and flare it's wings in an attempt to intimidate and frighten off whatever startled it. If this won't work Garlixie choose the better part of valor and flee back to their lairs. If this still doesn't deter an attacker they will attempt to escape via a back exit. If a Garlixie becomes cornered or injured it has no choice left but to fight and it does so using it's sharp claws and small fangs. They are very light weight however and possess very little brute strength which puts Garlixie at the losing end of almost any physical fight.

Habitations: Garlixie's are typicaly found in the following locations: Schools, Universities, Monastaries, Nuneries, Asylums, Fortresses, Large Castles, Prisons

Garlixie are native to Europe but have been known on occasion to travel abroad. They live within burrows and tunnels which they dig into the thicker walls of their chosen habitation. They will always choose the least visited area to nest in. A Garlixie's lair can be as simple as one chamber or as complex as 20 connected with many twisting and confusing tunnels. The more tunnels there are the more vulnerable a Garlixie thinks it is as the natural response to a perseved threat for a Garlixie is to create more places to hide.

Garlixie are often killed because they are mistaken for dark creatures or simply because they cause trouble or become destructive. Nests of Garlixie that are not taken care of can quickly get out of hand and the generated offspring can cause a lot of havoc and general chaos before they disperse to find their own homes.

Once they've found a place to live Garlixie have been known to defend it and it's contents with a passion that in the muggle world has at times marked them as protective spirits. This belief often times carried over in modern times in the form of stone "gargoyles" which were said to protect households from evil spirits.
