The Naga

Subjects of myth and legend, these creatures claim to be the kings and queens of the serpent world. With the ability to shift from snake to human form they have inspired the beleif of many to think that they are devine spirits or beings of great celestial power. Their extreme love of secrets and xenophobic nature makes them an enigma even among the wizarding folk.

Creature Rating: XXXXX - The naga were given such a high rating because their dislike of strangers and powerfull magical abilities can make them extremely hostil. They have been known to attack without provocation. It is beleived that they view human beings, for the most part, as lower creatures and are below their concern.

Build: All naga have two forms which they can take at will. The main form is that of a huge venomous snake with a pearl growing inbetween the scales on the head. The second form is human and always appears to be very beautifull but also ethereal, always seeming to possess an unnaturla or unearthly look. In both fomrs they are very long and slender with lean toned muscles.

Coloring: Naga come in a variety of colors but their scales are patternless. They are a single solid color that pales along the belly scales and darkens near the tip of the tail. The typical colors are green, white, gold and bright red. Their eye colors range from dark green to pale yellow. In their human forms they almost always retain their snake coloring in their hair and eyes while their skin tends to be very dark.

Height: The naga are always tall, never shorter then 5' 6" in height(human form) or less then 30 feet in length(snake form)

Endurance: Do to a lack of interaction this information is not really known. Naga seem to be a race of little action or interaction but without true indepth study there is no way to be sure. When encountered those who have lived to tell of it say that they are lightning quick and if they do tire quickly they don't let the battle last long enough to suffer for it.

Lifespan: Once again there is little information that can accurately tell this. It is said that they can live for several centuries however.

Special Abilities: Along with their abilites to change their shape Naga have been seen performing a large variety of charm spells and seem to be able to summoun large amounts of normal snakes and other snake like creatures to their aid. They seem to have the ability to glow on command, whether this is a spell or simply a natural ability is unknown. They seem to be capable of vanishing without a trace despite their large size and bright coloring but once again how they do this is unknown.

Culture

Much of Naga culture is a mystery and can only be guessed at.

Clothing and Decoration: Since they are serpents Nagas don't seem to like clothing and when seen in human form typicaly don't wear it. If interacting with humans on friendly terms however they seem to respect the views of their companions and wear small amounts of clothing, typicaly loose fitting or extremely scant. Some have been known to wear rather extravagant jewelry even in snake form but this is rare.

Fears and Inabilities: Naga seem to be deathly afraid of large birds, particularly large eagles and pheonixes. For whatever reason large birds seem to attack Nagas automatically on sight and can be used to identify one that has taken human form.

Lifestyle: Naga are extremely secretive and highly territorial towards strangers. It is very difficult to study a nagas normal everyday routines.

Courtship Patterns: Naga appear to mate for life but this only seems to count for their snake forms. While in human form two naga can mate and not be considered perminant life mates. It is also rumored that Naga are capable of mating with and even producing offspring with other huminoid species while in human form though none have ever been found to confirm this rumor. How courtship is performed however is unknown.

Religion: Possibly the one thing not kept hushed is the Naga's religion or the version they tell of it anyhow. Naga beleive that they are the servants of the world snake. This appears to be their version of god and they seem quite adament when speaking of her. They are almost fanatical in their faith. When speaking of their faith they speak of themselves as second only to her, claiming to be her "hands". They seem to take offense when reffered to has her worshipers. The Naga and their serpent brothers are her true children and humans are only to bow at her feet. This suggests that humans are the worhsipers while they are her messengers. This suggests that there are human followers of the same religion. The Naga refuse to talk indepth about the workings of their church however.

Other Factors

Demeanor: Nagas as a whole seem to appear rather emotionless though this is more because they are naturaly snakes which don't possess the facial muscles used for expression. Most of their emotions are conveyed through their gaze, speach, and body language. They are highly full of themselves and certain of their superiority and they aren't afraid to show it when interacting with those they consider below them. They can be fast to anger but just as fast to calm which gives them an un-nerving amount of unpredictability.

Language: A Naga's first language is Parseltongue which they can speak and understand in both of their forms. They can learn human languages as well but can only speak them when using their human form.

Prejudices: Naga are highly prejudiced. They view all forms of life that are not serpent based to be below them.

Standard Hobbies: Naga and humans have never met in a relaxed social setting so it is impossible to tell what their preffered hobbies could be.

Fighting: Naga use a combination of physical and magical attacks when engaging in combat. They typicaly attack in their snake form using their powerfull venomous bite to kill lesser prey. In their human fomrs they can weild weapons and have been known to practice a great deal of martial arts which allows them to fight in this form even without a weapon on hand. Naga typicaly charm their enemies as their first move which will give them plenty of time to either kill their opponent easily or flee.

Habitations: Nagas reside in deep forrested or jungle areas, ussually on the outskirts of human habitations.

Magical Uses
The magical properties of the Naga are said to be very powerfull and since they are so rare anything made from a Naga's body is extremely valuable. The hide of a Naga is said to give the wearer the abiltiy to change into a snake, while jewelry created from a Naga's pearl grants a wearer the ability to speak and understand parseltongue. It is said that a potion made using the ground up remains of a nagas pearl can heal even the most greivous of injuries or sicknesses even if the heart has stopped.

Important Notes
While a Nagas ability to change shape is certainly magic based their ability to retain that shape is not. Using magic to dispell a Naga in an attempt to return it to it's true form does not work, in fact it seems to have the opposite effect, causing them to not be able to change their shape at all for a limited amount of time. In essance trying to remove their magic to change them back simply traps them in their human form.

Using a Restoring Spell, like the ones used to reverse animagi transformations, can cause Naga in human form to return to it's natural serpent form.
