Enkaikan Pronounciation: En-ky-can. Plural: Enkaikan (same) Creature Rating: XXXX Like the Veela, the Enkaikan are beautiful and vain. Like the merpeople, they call a body of water their home. Muggle and wizard alike has thought the legendary siren, a subtype of the merpeople, was responsible for luring men with their beauty and song to horrific drowning deaths, but it is the race of Enkaikan that holds the fault there, allowing blame to be passed onto the undeserving merfolk so they may continue their hunt of man without their prey ever knowing who the real culprits are. Strict guardians of their watery abodes, they offer no warm welcome to any manner of sentient anthropomorphic creature into their territories other than their own Kind. Enkaikan take great pride in their ability to lure humankind out to into the water towards them for no other purpose but to breed with them, and then devour them. However, there are a few from the great sum of the population that wish for mankind and Enkaikan to live in harmony, and seek the company of man as a friend, and not an item on the menu. Habitat: Anywhere in the world where there is a body of water, including practically uninhabitable regions such as the antarctic and arctic. Though they have been found living in bogs, ponds, rivers and lakes, the majority of existing Enkaikan live in the world's various oceans. Enkaikans can walk upon land and associate with the above-water folk for as long as they please outside of their home territory as long as they submerge themselves in any body of water, even in a tub, with or without cleansing salts or soap, once a day. When underwater, Enkaikans do not have set shelters, taking refuge only in what nature gives them when they need it, living in open territory shared by all members of the Clan. Language: Enkaikans speak their own language, Enklan, but can speak any human language they learn. They can also speak to fish and other aquatic life. Enklan sounds like a rapid series of clicks, squeaks, gurgling, bubbling, and screeching noises and when used, isn't really that attractive to hear. Physical Description: Male and female Enkaikan alike look perfectedly human from head to toe, if one only gave them a passing glance. A second look would reveal their exceptional, otherworldly beauty. Females commonly have long hair, large breasts and well defined curves, though other various body types of Enkaikan exist they are less excepted by their peers, and as a female dominated species the males look very feminine themselves. All Enkaikan lack body hair save their scalp and their eyebrows, and males are more thin and sleek-bodied than they are muscular. Even a fully grown male Enkaikan may be mistaken for an oddly flat-chested female until one spies that their...*er hem*...lower anatomy...is much different. Enkaikan have eternally soft, silken human-like skin that is most commonly the color of human skin as well, from the palest peach to the deepest ebony. About 75% of the Enkaiken population as a whole has human-colored skin. 20% has skin naturally tinted to match some part of their environment, typically in white, blue or green hues. The last 5% belongs to Enkaikan of higher rank in their territories. This smallest group of Enkaikan are referred to as Shu-Enkaikan, and their bodies undergo a process to display their high societal ranks on their own skin...proudly mimicking the colors and markings of their most favorite fish from their living space. The higher the rank, the more obvious and bold the patterns are. Hair: An Enkaikan's hair can be of any natural human color (brown, red, black, silver or blonde, anything inbetween, or even mixed together with one color highlighting the other), or any color pertaining to the environment they call home. For example, an Enkaiken clan that rules the area belonging to a freshwater lake hidden in a forest may have members who's hair is yellow-green, muddy brown with green stripes, or perhaps as clear and reflective as the water itself. An Enkaiken clan that resides in the ocean would have members with teal hair typically, or pale blue with gold flecks, as if bright sunlight was touching upon water. Maybe their hair would reflect a kind of amphibious or purely aquatic animal they share their home with. An Enkaiken from icy regions no human dare tread, such as the arctic, always has brilliant white hair and pure white skin to go with it. Hair length in Enkaikan can vary greatly, depending on the preferences of the Enkaikan in question, though often they choose never to cut their hair and let it grow long and wild. Hair texture varies as any human's hair would, from very coarse to very fine, very curly to very straight. Eyes: One can always tell how an Enkaikan feels by the color of his or her eyes, as they are ever changing with their moods, but the color pattern for each mood varies from individual to individual. An Enkaikan can also control their eye color when they so desire, and typically females and males alike pick shades of blue. Their irises can be absolutely any color under the rainbow, even combined rings of color, one overlapping another, but the area around the irises is always white or shades of yellow unless the Enkaiken is really old, and the pupils are always black. An elder Enkaiken has the possibility of having solid black eyes, pointing out the wisest and most knowledgable of the Enkaiken to the younger members of the species. Though their eyes are humanoid in appearance, their vision is not. Their underwater vision is so magnificent, they can see every tiny floating thing before their very eyes individually, and can see a shark or other aquatic predator coming for them from a mile away, long before their enemies can even see them. Above water, however, and their eyesight is as good as any normal human being. Height & Weight: Not very different from a human, though typically the height and weight of a female is more than any male Enkaikan. All Enkaikan have a well-preportioned body weight and are a healthy, fit race, though some have been known to be thinner than others. Females are typically six feet tall and about 140 pounds, males are often 5'5" and shorter, with of course less body weight to go with their height, but shorter females have been known to appear, as have taller males, though this is very uncommon. Culture: Food: An Enkaiken has a functioning disgestive system like mostly every other living being in existance, and thus requires solid food. The diet of these waterfolk consists usually consists of a mix of fish and aquatic vegetation as well as the flesh of man, though the human delicacy is purely optional. A majority of Enkaikan really enjoy and crave the taste of man as much as human women enjoy chocolate, yet there are others that have more polite cravings. Some Enkaikan that travel to the over-water lands more often have more various diets. Enkaikan will gladly partake in fish-oriented meals prepared by man, and some even become addicted to more processed food, especially pastries, cakes, and other high-sugar treats. Human sweets can lure an Enkaikan to become a mindless zombie to sugary food, and in fact has allowed some sailors or fishermen to keep their lives, bargaining to keep their skin for large helpings of candy with even the most rooted, time-honoring Enkaikan. Habits, Personality Problems: All Enkaikan are incredibly vain, and being such, are very particular about their appearance. In fact, vain isn't a serious enough word to describe how self-conscious they can be. The Enkaikan are wholly consumed by something that can only be described as the desire for self-perfection. To find a twig or piece of seaweed among their hair that wasn't put there on purpose can ruin their whole day...or maybe even their whole week. Some Enkaikan unfortunately also have another problem-- a strong, almost insatiable curiosity for new sights and new entertainment, and can be far too bold and blindly courageous for their own health. This includes especially being curious in things others have told them not to do or seek out. It is called among their Kind as having or being inflicted with the 'Dolphin's Eyes', referring to the particular sea mammal's naive, curious nature, and it is not considered a desirable trait to have. Those with Dolphin's Eyes tend to be more toned-down members of their species as well. Their desires for Manflesh can be in some cases practically nonexistant, as they find more pleasure in taking their fill of unfamiliar places and people, and their own appearances mean less to them than the average Enkaikan, being only slightly picky instead of ridiculously so. Clothings and Decoration: Colorful beads, thread, shells, polished stone, scales, feathers, and apprehended human jewelery either by force or chance are all capable of being donned upon the Enkaikan as decoration. They are fashioned into bracelets, rings, necklaces, earrings, other piercings, or to be embroidered onto what little clothes they wear. Clothes vaguely reflect the human culture nearest by to their territory, and can be made from the hide of fish or other aquatic life, seaweed, or even misguarded human fabrics. When traveling on land to make their impression on humanfolk, they will steal human clothes and wear them--though, with a bit of stitching and modifying to reflect pieces of their natural home to suit their tastes. Most Enkaikan do not have a liking for footwear, as there is no need for such things in the water, only grudgingly wearing light sandals when on land, though more human-bound individuals don't mind a fine pair of boots or shoes. Enkaikans dress very lightly when at home in the water, and most outfits are simply two-pieces and very thin with no further layers or undergarments, for that matter. Away of the water, they are forced to dress according to the weather, as they are susceptible to it as much as a human being is. Social Terms & Lifestyle: Enkaikan society functions only vaguely similar to an ant colony, and a sum of Enkaikan living together is called a Clan. 99% of all Enkaikan are born into Clans, and small unrelated Clans will merge with larger, better maintained Clans and give in to more sufficient leadership. Successful Clans are usually no less than 40 members in number. The leader of a Clan is always female and is referred to as the Matriarch, or Mother. She is the final answer to all queries and decision concerning the Clan, and the judge when punishing those of lower rank in her Clan. She is the most powerful, and the protector of all the Enkaikan in her territory if all other means of protection should fail. Though powerful, she is subject to being overthrown, and anyone strong enough and smart enough to get past her security to overthrew her in their society deserves the new title of Matriarch. There is then below the Matriarch her advisors and overseers, referred to as the Head Sisters, and are always the best female examples of the Matriarch's bloodline. They are never outsiders that have merged in with the Clan in question, and as true daughters of the Matriarch they share her royal treatment and respect. The number of Head Sisters usually has to do with the population of the Clan, and the rule is often that for every 25-30 members there is a Head Sister. The eldest Head Sister is the heiress to the Matriarch when she passes by whatever means, and upon the Matriarch's death the Eldest Sister will take her rightful place. This new Matriarch will have her own sisters of the Matriarch past as her Head Sisters until she produces children of her own and raises them, then her strongest female children will take the places of her existing siblings, and her siblings are cast down into the minority of the Clan, to live the rest of their lives free of royal responsiblities, though still well respected as once advisors and scouts of the Matriarch herself. The Matriarch and her Head Sisters are always the Shu-Enkaikan of the Clan [see Physical Description]. Matriarchs and Head Sisters removed from these head positions for whatever reason loose their Shu-Enkaikan status, and the blessed beauty being a Shu-Enkaikan gave them, fading into ordinary appearances. The Pack are the Enkaikan who exist as guardians of the Head Sisters and the Matriarch, and enforcers of the Matriarch's rule. The Pack rank is often made up of sons and/or daughters of the Matriarch, or even young Enkaikan she kidnaps from the Minority of the Clan, that she finds disposable and she raises them carefully, luring them into a false sense that they are truly loved as much as even the Head Sisters, so that they are more ready to sacrifice themselves for the sake of their Mother if need be. As Enkaikan are capable of producing many children at a time and they mature quickly, finding those to be of the Pack is no problem. There are always plenty she wishes she could bring to death sooner that are less than her standard of beautiful. To one Head Sister there is usually four Pack, and to the Matriarch, always a number of ten, more or less, depending on the preference (or paranoia) of the lady in charge. There is then a varying number of Pack that are sent out to maintain peace within the Minority of the Clan, bringing to the Matriarch traitors and criminals against her to do with them what she will, and there are other Pack that guard the borders of Clan territory, watching out for human trespassers for the Clan to feast on. There is then, beneath all the others, rest of the population--the Minority. These Enkaikan are kept in line by the Pack, spied on by the Head Sisters for their entertainment, and are occasionally subject to the wrath of the Matriarch when she is feeling particularly moody. The Enkaikan living in the Minority live to serve the whims of those in higher ranks and live to fill the basic needs of the Clan by hunting, farming, scouting, trading, goods-crafting, and breeding to make more to do their jobs when they're too old, or to make children that are wisked away and 'promoted' to Pack. When food becomes scarce, the water level shrinks too low, or the rising number of predators in their home area threaten a Clan of Enkaikan, they have no choice but to migrate to other Clans' territories and plead to merge with them. In doing so, they are passed into the Minority. A vast amount of the Minority were once outsiders of the Clan, and a very small percentage are retired Head Sisters. There's also the daughters of Head Sisters who cannot become Head Sisters themselves because their mothers are not yet Matriarch, and there are also all the sons of the Matriarch and the Head Sisters. Most males end up in the Minority, and a small few end up in Pack. It's not to say the Minority are treated like worthless slaves...in fact, those of the Minority are treated like the average citizen or commoner in human society. The Warring of the Old and the New: Most Enkaikan with this lust for new experiences in their blood die at a young age and never have a chance to breed, others who make it to adulthood are usually denied the right, so as to avoid unneccessary and shameful future deaths within the Clan. Unlike the human race, Enkaikan as a whole do not permit who they consider 'stupid' to breed, as creating more 'stupid' Enkaikan strays away from the true and pure Enkaikan image. However...there are some Enkaikan inflicted with Dolphin-Eyes that escape the monitoring clutch of their Matriarch and the Clan they're born into...disappearing to other waters to find others like them, and they form their own communities. Dolphin-Eyed communities speak of the good qualities of man and are fervent about Enkaikan and those certain land-dwellers sharing friendly relationships and prospering, without Enkaikan ever following the tradition of devouring a single human being. Mainly, these Enkaikan are impressed by human culture--food, clothing, and especially art and architecture. The fact that man, like the Enkaikan, can craft and appreciate beauty, makes man equal and worthy of their attention. Often, they come to land to liven up the human spirits in a shabby town--maybe dance upon a table at a pub for a few lonely men, or sing to and occupy a crowd of sweet human children while their mothers go about their daily chores. They share, with their hearts and souls right out on their figurative sleeves, all they can with the humans they meet about them and their secret Enkaikan lives, so as to gain human information from those they talk to, always curious and craving for new ideas and interesting things. Enkaikan who do not 'suffer' the views of the Dolphin-Eyed believe that it is those Enkaikan specifically that are putting all of their species at risk of mass discovery. They do not entirely trust the prey they've eaten for centuries and centuries to actually accept them and forgive them fully, not after all they've done, and fear that man may hunt them out if they know the whereabouts of more Clans and drive them to extinction. They consider the actions taken by the Dolphin-Eyed Enkaikan unwise, and a few strict, powerful Traditional Clans have allied together against opposing Dolphin-Eyed Clans. If these Dolphin-Eyed Clans are small enough to be defeated and wiped out, those stronger Clans will do so quite brutually and with no regret. The Dolphin-Eyed Enkaikans are not without their own allies, however. As they offer man deep sea treasure and friendly trade, man in return grants them guardians in small numbers--on armed ships. Dolphin-Eyed Clans that have been previously threatened or attacked by other Traditional Clans simply call the aid of the people they've offered service to, and man will send his metal cannonballs flying in the enemy's direction. Warring still continues, and may remain so until the numbers of man upon the earth are so great that the Traditional Enkaikans can no longer hide their lives from prying eyes and curious human minds. In the future, Traditional Enkaikans may be forced to accept humanity and give up their culture and their rituals simply because there will be too many Above Water to ignore. Or, maybe what the elder-minded Enkaikans fear most will come true, and a Dolphin-Eyed may share too much information with the wrong person and the human race hunts them all down, pulling them apart for uses in their spells or even returning the favor and putting Enkaikan on the menu, utterly destroying them. Lifecycle/Reproduction: Courting: Enkaikan courtship is vaguely similar to the human race they so often despise, as they partake in human actions such as kissing and hugging, except it is the female who is more dominant than the male. The female actively seeking to impress a male decorates herself and highlights her beauty, even painting aquatic designs on her skin with waterproof, natural gels they find means to create, as not all are as perfectedly exotic as the Shu-Enkaikan. They eventually begin to offer the male they chose for themselves gifts on a daily basis, either of tasty treats or unedible items of particular interest they found, or maybe even presents made by their own hands. A relationship is formed once the gift-giving on the female's part commences and they are considered Mates whether the male really approves of the female or not in the beginning, and the term is as loose as 'boyfriend' or 'girlfriend' in human society. Mate Relationships often do not last long, and Enkaikan do not hold onto heartache for such break-ups, as they are merely trying out others while seeking the perfect, most suitable other half for themselves, mistakes are commonly made and personalities and desires don't always match. Enkaikan seem to understand that and handle it far better than the land-dwelling likes of man. When both Mated Enkaikan involved agree a relationship isn't working, or even if it's just one of them (usually the male) and wishes to seperate, no one is left behind in a sour mood or ill wishes the other. The female gift-giving simply stops once one of the party speaks up, and they move on. However, it is still taboo even beneath the water to take or pine over another's Mate, as you could possibly steal their life partner, and Enkaikan females will go to battle for the males they want to keep. Traditionally, they are death matches formally announced and watched over by the Matriarch, and the one left standing keeps the male in question. Young Enkaikan, like naughty human youths, will occasionally induldge in filthier personal games that are more than little kisses of affection, as long as they are not caught by their parents or other superiors. If they are caught in the breeding act before they are Bonded, reprimand is heavy, the Enkaikan involved are shamed, and they are sentenced to be apart from one another and made to work the labors of the Minority for however long the Matriarch decides. Some harsher Matriarchs like to kill off the female as punishment instead, putting her through an elaborate, painful ceremony before the eyes of her mate, and then she sends off the male mentally traumatized and broken-spirited. But, despite the devestating risks, young Enkaikan often cannot resist their hormones, and often decisions--and fatal discoveries--are made. No new Enkaikan are ever reported born from Mates who have messed around, which suggests Enkaikan do not care to take into account a female Mate might be pregnant. In fact, it has been said by particularly revealing Dolphin-Eyed Enkaikan that they have seen what happens to pregnant Mated females who have been caught--the females are gutted open and their eggs destroyed before their eyes. If the relationship becomes more serious and both consider each other valuable life partners rather than pleasurable entertainment to pass the time, the male finally begins to give the female gifts back...just a single, very intricate, roughly fist-sized one. This one gift that he always has crafted himself, and are made with materials and things he owns that are most dear to him. It is as symbolic as a modern day human engagement ring. If a female Enkaikan has been very patient and the male has truly fallen for her, and she accepts the gift, she will thread it onto rope and wear it around her neck. At this time, both Mated Enkaikan cease flirting and eyeing others and dedicate all their time to one another. Enkaikan couples seeking to become official go to their Clan Matriarch. The Matriarch gives them her blessing and magically (and painlessly) applies to the couple a brand, which is the family crest of the Enkaikan female in the relationship. Through this brand no other Enkaikan desiring any one of the couple can harm them or charm them away from the other, the magical brand forbids it, and the couple is eternally safe from temptation. A Mated couple of Enkaikan who have reached this level of love and intimacy are then referred to as Bonded Enkaikan. A Matriarch who does not approve of the Mated couple, however, is not bound by law to do so...and she can shun them. In doing that, nothing can protect either of the rejected Enkaikan from the harsh physical or mental abuse of jealous others, even though they consider themselves practically wed to one another. In fact, those who do not recieve the Matriarch's branding ceremony, are not allowed to breed. On a side note, Pack are not allowed to breed whatsoever, as it is their whole existence to be guardians of the Clan Enkaikan...but that does not stop a select few from falling in love and trying, even if they are killed for their efforts. At this point when Bonded and blessed by the Matriarch, Enkaikan law now allows them to commit the breeding act, and they can safely produce children without fear of punishment. Gestation, Eggs, and Development: An Enkaikan male is equipped in the same way a human male is, and an Enkaiken female seems to be the same as a human female on the outside, complete with functioning mammary glands and developed breasts. The breeding act can be as entertaining and as complex as any human coupling, as they are both remarkably similar. However, deep in the lower half of her body, a female Enkaikan's real inner workings are much different. Enkaikan do not give birth to live young. They lay clutches of soft, jelly-like eggs securely in the water after a gestation period of roughly four months. During the gestation period the female is utterly ravenous with hunger, eating when she is not sleeping, and will start trying to eat things that usually she wouldn't if she cannot find more food, such as gravel or coral, her stomach as bottomless as a shark's. After she lays her eggs--which are a clutch anywhere from 3 eggs to 30 and no less--safe at home in a soft nest she constructs usually of seaweed or other aquatic vegetation, the next eight months the members of the family of the female guard the eggs as well as the female herself, and this is the only time the Bonded male seems to play a dominant role in Enkaikan life. While the female is determined to guard her clutch and becomes a homebody, the male performs all the duties in his society that are required of him, as well as hers as she is tied up with nesting, and then brings her food as she is unable to get it for herself. The eggs hatch, and the young break free and are welcomed into the particular Enkaikan family. Enkaikan newborns are half fish, lacking legs in favor of a tail with underdeveloped front arms that are more like longer fins, and gills, unable yet to breath air. Hard fish scales form within roughly an hour of their hatching to protect their frail new bodies and cover them entirely, even their bald baby Enkaikan heads. They only vaguely resemble human babies, and look more like midget forms of merfolk. Nature thankfully has instructed means to tell apart males from females in this stage when they seem almost identical due to their fishy structures and their lack of genital distinction, as the males are white in color, and the females are darker shades of gray. Newborn males are referred to as 'fry', and females are referred to as 'pups'. The female and her family no longer need to stand watch over her eggs, and she raises her children as any mother would, taking them out to explore and experience life as any mother would, accompanied by her Bonded. Until they are about three years old, they survive on their mother's milk. By three to four years of age, an Enkaikan has developed air-loving lungs to go along with the gill system it has, and when out of water, can command its body what it needs to breathe. The protective white or gray scales begin to peel off and fall away to reveal soft humanoid skin, the now smaller, less used tail moves to the buttox region, legs form, and the front fins on the arms start to diminish to mere webs between the fingers. Scalp hair and eyebrows develop, the child is more capable of expression and a bit more humanoid. The gender's anatomy is more obvious, and in this stage a child Enkaikan gains a name for itself according to personality or physical traits, no longer referred to as the "Fry/Pup of (Insert Name Here)". When not referred to individually by name, the term for any Enkaikan child is 'pupa', or a group of children is a 'pupoon'. It will be ten more slow years until the child Enkaikan reaches full physical development. They are weaned at the early part of this stage, and developing a curiosity in solid food, take to the greens and fish their parents eat. By about fifteen, an Enkaikan is done growing. The tail has shed harmlessly and painlessly, no scales are present on their bodies anymore, and they can finally be mistaken for humans. Having spent years in the water perfecting how to swim, they only need the webs on their hands and feet to assist them now. Due to their still developing hormones however, which makes them think irrationally as any teenager would, Enkaikan are not considered full-fledged adults in their society for another two or three years more until their bodies find balance and they mentally mature a bit. This does not mean though that they are any less complete, and are very capable of forming Bonds --though foolish as it seems--and breeding at this age. The Impossible Mixbreed Enkaikan: Enkaikan can only successfully breed outside their species with human beings, and when they do, the resulting child is either live-born fully human from a human female, carried the human gestation, with bizarre colored hair and eyes; or it is hatched from eggs fully Enkaikan from an Enkaikan mother, with some plain physical traits of the other human parent. The Enkaikan body is too complex to make a successful truly mixbred child, and any child born as half Enkaikan, half human in appearance and body always attempts to greet the world as a liveborn, oddly no matter the species of the female parent (coming out of the Enkaikan mother absolutely shell-less, to her horror), and is always born with gills that do not filter water as it should and incomplete lungs...and thus...dies within seconds of taking its first useless gulp of breath. The chance that the poor halfbreed baby might occur is high, and for this reason Enkaikan and humans that are actually in relationships usually chose not to mate, caring not to feel what it is to loose a child. There are others still that try anyway, and some are lucky to bare either healthy human or healthy Enkaikan children. If a child born of such breeding is more human with only a few vague physical (thought colorful) traits of the other Enkaikan parent, their only blessing and extra ablities are incredibly good looks, and perhaps they swim better than their peers. They live Above-Water. If a child born of such breeding is Enkaikan with only a few vague physical (and dull) traits of the other Human parents, as they are full Enkaikan, they can do everything any Enkaikan is capable of doing. They live with their Enkaikan Clan. Lifespan & Death: Enkaiken live only about 70 years, though some Matriarchs have discovered ancient magical tricks to lengthen their lifespans and keep themselves on the throne for far longer than they should. Enkaikans are immune all human illnesses save that they too can suffer from cancer, not that currently either species understands what it is yet. However, whatever the fish can suffer from in the water so can they, and they'll migrate away from aquatic territory that has but a few sick fish in it. Those that do die of old age are mourned over, respected, and buried at the bottom of their water environments. The passed on Enkaikan are usually covered in something heavier than just sand or dirt to make sure their dead bodies do not float to the surface, such as large rocks, ship parts, or boulders. All Enkaikan believe that those of them that have died are reincarnated into the bodies of the larger fish or sea mammals that they respect and do not hunt, such as whales, dolphins, sharks, or in the case of freshwater environments, waterbirds or turtles. An Enkaikan gaining in years does not wrinkle--in fact, though their hair may turn gray and their eyes black, an Enkaikan even in death still looks as good as it did when it was a young adult. Religion: Other than their firm cultural beliefs and their belief in reincarnated spirits, Enkaikan have no set religion that is known of. Some Dolphin-Eyed Enkaikan, have however taken up human religions if they care to. Special Abilities: Webbed Hands/Feet - Enkaikans, as young teens and adults, have webs between their digits and are extremely agile when in the water, swimming at speeds that can rival that of a marlin or a shark. Slippery Fish Out of Water - Even when out of their watery environment, they have a natural grace to them that makes them hard to hit. Their skin is so unbearably, sensually soft and combined with the ability to trigger something in their bodies to coat themselves in some kind of moist, odorless substance that gives them a wet sheen when they feel threatened, it makes them even harder to pin down or grab hold of. Spears & Blowguns - All Enkaikans can fashion crude weapons from sharpened stone and driftwood, and you often won't find an Enkaikan not armed with one, or at least, nearby to their person. Females especially are very fond of blowguns when dealing with humans Above Water that they don't want to waste their lovely voices on, lacing their darts with paralyzing jellyfish poison or frog toxins, depending on where they're from. Claws - Though Enkaikan have nails that seem flat and human enough on their five-fingered hands, on bodily command they can pop these 'false' nails off (which is as painful as ripping off your own nails, only for a brief amount of time) to reveal three-inch, hook-like talons that can leave really nasty wounds in those that oppose them. The effect that brings about the claws in the first place does not wear off 'til a week after, becoming brittle over time and can be cracked off to reveal simple humanoid nails formed underneath them once again. For a month after, the Enkaikan who used this natural ability cannot do so until the talons can regrow themselves deep within the makings of its fingers. Aqua-taurian Matriarchs - Some really powerful ancient Matriarchs, the clever ones that fight their old age, seem to take being a Shu-Enkaikan to the extreme. They oddly seem to reverse their bodies to somewhat resemble their fry form again through means of magical knowledge they hold fiercely secret. Their lower half melds together and forms the back-half of the fish they choose to resemble, becoming eerily faster and agile in the water, and even more trouble for those who may oppose her beneath the waves. She'll totally be unable to ever return to land once she undergoes this transformation, but most Matriarchs are Traditionalists anyway, and don't care to have to walk ever again. Magically Resistant to Water Temperature - Air-weather and air-temperature, strangely enough, can make them comfortable or uncomfortable as it does for any human. In the water, they are bothered not by boiling underwater geysers or frigid ice-laced areas, but they can sense the difference. They can chose whether or not to stick around depending on whether they enjoy the interesting sensations of hot or cold more, as extreme water temperature changes like that can be from ticklish to sinfully pleasurable in nature to an Enkaikan induldging in it. They are happy, purely, as long as they are IN water, literally able to exist anywhere there is a body of it. Unfortunately, this also means they don't feel the pains of water temperature that humans feel, and may not understand if they are servicing humans that they don't like their bathwater or their drinking water boiling hot or painfully cold. Freshwater/Saltwater, Doesn't Matter - It's not the salt in the water that matters to ocean Enkaikan, and its not the lack of salt that matters to freshwater Enkaikan. As long as there is water, they will exist there. Sometimes pond Enkaikan will go on journeys to visit their sea brethren, for example, but that does not mean they change their natural camouflage. Once born into a certain environment, an Enkaikan is stuck with what colors nature deals them, even if the new place their visiting doesn't look like what they're used to. Song - Their ability to sing is what really makes an Enkaikan, an Enkaikan. Once they begin to sing, their voices act as an incredibly powerful charm, drawing the opposite sex of the human race (wizard and muggle alike), towards them mindlessly. Humans fallen under the spell can do or think nothing else other than seek out the carrier of that attractive voice. Depending on the age of the Enkaikan is how far their voices can reach, and particularly old Matriarchs' voices can reach over 20-30 miles. Common Enkaikan can only reach about as far as 3 or 4 miles, but the combined efforts of a large Clan could bring an entire human city to a population of 0...luring them to the water and drowning all of them. This may explain the disappearance of some whole, ancient human civilizations...perhaps some humans really angered a Matriarch and she rallied her people against them. Common Enkaikan can only target 1 to 5 individuals at a time with their song, but the number of individuals they can target grows with age. They can also target one individual at a time if they so desire. Only really intelligent beings other than humans, such as gnomes, can be effected and controlled by Enkaikan song, however merfolk are immune and it is said, vampires and centaur are immune as well. All Enkaikan, of course, are immune to eachother's voices. It is to be noted the an Enkaikan can sing, just to sing, if it wants, and not as an action to cause harm. Their voices are always hauntingly attractive, and easy on the ears to listen to. A Matriarch can only open her mouth to sing, however, if she means to actually charm people, due to her level of power. Enemies: An Enkaikans common enemies are usually those that are bigger than it and not sentient enough to be charmed -- such as orcas, sharks, leopard seals, and freshwater enemies like alligators. Man can become an effective enemy as well if the Enkaikan does not sing, especially if they are wizards or witches, as they are slightly more resistant to their charming song and do have the chance of casting magic against them. But the one enemy that rates as the highest threat above anything else in the Enkaikan's life other than themselves, are the merfolk, especially the siren subtypes. They are sworn enemies, and will fight to the death if they see one another. The Enkaikan As a Character: So, you want to play an Enkaikan? Perhaps you are a friendly Enkaikan seeking to become a student out of your curiosity of Man, and thus, a Dolphin-Eyed. Or perhaps you are a clever Tradationalist Enkaikan gaining entry into the school as a student, but you are really a spy for a Clan nearby, aiming to eventually bring the humans in the school to the water to be eaten. Or maybe you are a Nuetral Enkaikan, not seeking peace, but not entirely following the old ways of your Clan either, following your own whims and making your own assessments about the Human population. You'll go to the side of whoever you think is winning in the end, caring more for your survival than anyone else's. Naming Your Enkaikan: An Enkaikan typically has two names. One they use that's simple, like Helen or Gael, to use when in the company of Humans. The names are usually generic in whatever human tongue they have to speak. And if they need to, they'll make up a false last name if any particular being pries them for one. The other is their Enkaikan name, which can be incredibly complicated and long. They have a last name and family symbols or crests just like above-water people do, and they have first names. They usually only reveal their real names to other Enkaikan, but if they trust some humans on land, they may reveal their real names to them, as well. Enkaikan Examples: Ichixus Jubseruiseo Poseurek Wehesoicitik Cosdiur Nsueyhsdus ...and so on. It may help to just...hit random things on the keyboard, if you're hitting a bit of a dead end. [[Author's Note: I have submitted the first Enkaikan, so now ya'll sign up with one while you can! As this Race's Creator, I am placing a limit on how many more Enkaikan can enter this RP. Just four more aside from mine, and that's it--unless the Admins decide they want an even less number available. ...We don't need this board crawling with deadly singing magical freaks.]] |
