Went out for my first experience of stalking on saturday and what a great experience ,got in at 2.30 am on saturday morning from foxing then back out again at at 5am to meet up with rest of the guys at 6am.The invite had come from the leader of a syndicate after a quick whos who we set of up a track to where we would split into 2s and there were 2 beasts up front ,but they trotted of after about 5 mins of us watching from about 70yds (no safe shot available) so the 2 guys that had already decided they were going that way went of after them and we then went another way.Not long into our walk the mist had started coming down and before long it was quite heavy, just before it had got really heavy we heard a shot ring out (and the thud of a hit I may add)from the direction of the other guys.Well me and my mentor seen a few does after that but no buck so it was back to the meeting place .After what seemed ages the guys appeared back a little out of breath with a nice looking buck which they tell me was shot at the top of the heart .Once they had got the buck ready for the dealer they took me up for a shot of a 243 on there range and I will admit my first shot was slightly high and right of the target but my second was near perfect ,they assured me both would of killed if aiming for the heart. So was really pleased with the day ,plus got an invite back next week where they say i might enjoy it better as there might not be any mist to ruin it but I still really enjoyed it.

p.s. hope that didnt sound to long winded *lol*

Like Martin says you'll get hooked mate.
Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares? ....... He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!

Good it means we can have the "which calibre" debate again !! *cheers*

I bet you also start thinking (if you haven't already) about doing some reloading ?

Funny you should mention the calibre debate Pro ,I was thinking of a .243 but a few people ive spoken to have mentioned .270 -HB- .The only thing is its all dependent on work picking up so that ive the pennies to get a rifle ,scope MOD ,etc

Well I'll kick it off, my father-in-law shot 270 and they kick like a mule - 6.5x55 a far better bet with a higher ballistic co-efficient. However you will probably find a used 270 easier to find.

Billy if your going to fox with it it has to be .243win followed closely by 6.5x55 swede.
If larger deer are to be encountered regular then 6.5 or 7mm08.

6.5 gets my vote too i personally shot 6 differant species from reds down to a fox in one long weekend with mine last December and nothing ran further than 5 yds after the shot and that was with a 125 grain bullet
Having said that this 30.06 I've just bought is growing on me

Was out again this morning this time with the mate that runs the shoot and not his mate as last week all we seen were does but his mate managed 2 bucks in the space of 2 mins.He actually thought that the 1st 1 he'd hit had managed to get up and start to run so he shot it again when it stopped .You could imagine his suprise when he walked in and there were 2 and not just 1 buck.I on the other hand had a wee shot of my buddy's .308 which I found to be nice to shoot .

In my experience my 308 kicked worse than my rem mag but it was a browning euro (a light rifle with a short barrel)
a client has a husquava and he has put a easall recoil pad on it and its still brutal.
If you go this way either make sure its a heavish rifle or moderate it.
just out of curiousity have you ever fired yours without the mod.
