First buck with new set up

I've been after this buck since 1st April and he has eluded me four times so far - today it was my turn - I decided not to stalk but to use the recently changed high seat position at the other end of the ride and he walked straight out for me at around 80 yards. Gave me an ideal opportunity with my recently re-stocked .308 to take him free hand whilst sitting. Forgot about the angle from the high seat so the impact was a little high, missed the heart but shredded the lungs (150 grain PRIVI), he ran for about 40 yards and then dropped.

The new set up is a 1994 Weatherby Vanguard .308 with a Boyd stock recently arrived from the States - took six weeks (caught up in ash cloud) but well worth the wait. Took 5 minutes to swap stocks over and this buck was the first shot taken.

It cost a total of £111 which included VAT and parcel force handling fee!

Tony, I know that this buck has frustrated you, well now you can relax mate, blooded the new rifle and got your buck, and as a bonus you know that the high seat is in a good position. *Monkey Hanger*
By the way folks, I've seen the rifle in the flesh and the photo does it no justice at all, it's a real beauty. ***goooodd****
Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares? ....... He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!

I didn't detach the scope from the action so my theory was that the zero would remain unchanged, by only changing the stock I surmised that nothing else would move - it may have been coincidence or I may have got lucky but the zero appeared to stay puty.

Tony you must check the zero even if you removed the stock and replaced the same one never mind a different one.
The tension of the stock screws and the bedding of the action all play a large part in zero and groups. And also the barrel must stay free floating or bedded as it was on the old stock even the way the stock vibrates can alter barrel harmonics.
Sounds like you very lucky mate.
TRY IT ON A TARGET before you shoot it in anger again.
regards john

Good looking rifle Tony, I quite like Weatherby rifles, it looks well with your new laminate stock. As you said the shot was a tad high but it wasn't going anywhere and there was no danger from the green stuff.

P.S. Consider yourself bo11ocked in the "Deer John" zero post !!
