Bought or self made it's time the Larsen was set and baited. If you are fortunate enough to be able to get a live calling bird great but if not try this method which has worked for me for many years. Position the trap with a clear area round it, but if possible near trees from where it can be viewed. ![]() Make a "nest" with grass and tuck it into the corner of one of the catching compartments away from the outside edges. The spring loaded door pushes the split ( in 2 pieces) perch together but it breaks releasing the door when a bird (or squirrel) stands on it. ![]() Scatter broken egg shells outside the trap and after 3 or 4 days break a full egg carefully and leave in the shell also outside. A magpie will usually get too keen and you will have your calling bird. Ideally you could swap this with someone as an "outsider" will usually get better results - imposter and all that. ![]() Often a Crow will see why the Magpie is so keen to inhabit your trap and if you are lucky you may catch it. I have had about 4 magpies for every 1 crow. Come on every year you consider getting a Larsen - make it this year. photopro |

Well done Bobby you will see a big difference in the small bird population when you start thinning the Maggies out, it's a pity more people aren't doing it. I've also got a Grey Squirrel taking a lot of interest in my Larsen, I think he has been in once judging by the way one of the eggs was opened. If he gets in again and manages to escape I will put a double catch on the sprung doors which will keep them firmly closed. photopro |

pro, if it's been in once, and got out, then it WILL get out again unless you sort the door soon. |

It doesn't seem to work like than Nige even though Squirrels are quick learners - I have had them in the past. photopro |

Well done Bobby you are certainly making a dent in the crow population. Magpies are pretty docile to remove when trapped but crow are right bas***ds aren't they ? photopro |

They look as if they would put up a good fight but i just poke the air rifle through the cage and shoot them first then take them out.

That's exactly what I do but when you are using a captured crow as a call bird you need to pick the evil little bu99ers up standard gardening gloves are totally inadequate !! The best way to deal with them is to chuck a cloth over them so they can't see you and then use a thick pair of gloves, don't be surprised though if they turn on their back and point their claws at you, like I said nasty bu99ers !! photopro |

I get mal to get mine out if he's handy its good practice for him. What else have you caught and obviously released in your larsen. I've had a cat, jay, small birds, tawny owls, sparrow hawks and even a goshawk. I've heard of fox cubs but never had one in a larsen. |

Squirrels, cats & song birds plus I've had a Magpie progressively "eaten" through the mesh by I would think a Mink or a Stoat. |

I've bumped this thread to prompt you to get your Larsen set (if you haven't already) or maybe to get one bought / made. It really does make a big difference whether you are helping the resident song birds or protecting game birds plus you'll get a few surprise catches just to keep you on your toes !! |
