Well I was looking through some photos and came across these gems so I thought I would share my first with you all as it was memorable to say the least. Anyway if you are sitting comfortably then I will begin I started out stalking up in Scotland (south Ayrshire) to be precise which is where I did my DSC1 and also was in a syndicate although I didnt take a deer off it as I didnt go up very often due to kids and money but enough about that.On the morning of the stalk the weather was very pleasant and we were up early (3 am if I remember rightly) and there was a group of stags that had been spotted the evening before so we walked quite a way through mature plantations and out onto some open hill and glassing all the way incase of any deer enroute and tried to find them which in the end wasnt too hard as they were feeding in the same place but to get to them was a bigger challenge we had quite a bit of ground to cover so we started off just crouching and moving quickly but quietly until we were within a reasonable distance then started the crawling until we were on top of a hillock opposite the group and we never spooked 1 so I got into a lying position and placed the crosshairs on the stag but as there were a group I was being told to change target as they moved to get the lightest one to drag as it was a fair walk back so eventually I had my target but I got the fever and I couldnt pull the trigger it took me what seemed to be ages to squeeze the trigger (6.5-55 Tikka) a quick ultimatum from the guide was all I needed either shoot the F**king thing ( I am sure Robbo can relate to this in the times he has took me out sometimes it takes a kick up the &rse) or dont, that sorted me out, I squeezed, the Tikka spat and the Stag ran into the plantation about 50yds away....... Sh*t where did I hit it I thought, we left it a minute or 2 and slowly went to look for blood but as the grass was wet I didnt find owt I was getting concerned by this point, the guide had gone into the plantation and I heard him shout "Come here" my heart started thumping I thought I was in for a but no there on the deck was this lad so the customary blooding of my face and hand shake took place, we must have dragged this stag well over 1.5 miles mainly up hill it was a killer. I am gutted I didnt get the antlers but it was still in velvet but the memories and photo are enough.![]() There is another side to this story, while we were gralloching my stag another lad who was out on his own rang the guide and said he had shot a stag and it was big so a decision was made to have breakfast then go get it so we went back and were chatting over breakfast about his beast and we all thought he was bullsh**ing about the size so after breakfast we set off to get his stag. He had shot it at the bottom of a steep ride in between 2 blocks of trees and when we eventually got to the bottom there was this monster in hard antler "Bas***d" I thought and 4 of us struggled to drag this monster up those hills out of the plantation, over a mile again. Apparently the lad had to shoot it twice to kill it, no wonder Everyone including the guide were speechless when we saw this stag it really was massive for a lowland stag and the damage it was doing scraping up the trees was easily visible as was a network of deer tunnels through the mature coniferous trees it really was amazing it just shows these animals can be anywhere and you might only ever get one chance to see em let alone shoot em. The stag was a 12 point royal and all it cost was £350 which on the hill would have cost £1200 + so I am told. ![]() ![]() |

I have shot big cumbrian reds on the hill and have told him the easy bit is pulling the trigger. Then the work starts. Think it might have sunk in now he's seen the size of them and the terrain they live in. Took him on a grouse moor 2 years ago and that killed him and he was in shirt sleves with noting more than a flag. |

Good write-up Gary, I have dragged a couple of red deer "staggies" and they were bad enough, I certainly wouldn't like to do it for over a mile. photopro |

I'm busy tonight packing my equipment ready for 4 days on the open hill at Glen Etive after stags. All three hills we are stalking are munros so it will be a hard climb but the estate uses a garron to extract shot beasts so hopefully there won't be too much dragging. Very kindly we have been offered unlimited free salmon fishing in both loch and river and on Saturday can have a go for a brace of ptarmagen back on the hill. |

Just paint a few of your partridge white, almost like the real thing but without a bloody great mountain to climb up first. |
