unluckiest client finally changes his luck

After quite a number of outings and only 1 shot (a miss) our luck changed today.

We have had literally dozens of deer in previous outings cross our path, either unsafe to shoot or the wrong sex.

Dog walkers and farmers have all played their part in spoiling stalks also.

After sitting in the truck this morning waiting for enough light to allow us to stalk, the light finally arrived and what a nice morning it was going to be.

The wind was changeable and not easy to read. But we were off on a blind stalk.

It wasn't long before we bounced our first deer of the morning a doe. Breeze had pointed it in the gamestrip and i had crouched to try and see what she was pointing, but the deer had seen me move.

So we carried on around the boundry this was to allow better wind for the approach on the main wood.

Seeing 2 more deer making away along a hedgerow we watched them strolling, It was obvious by their body language that the buck (a 4 pointer) wasn't happy. Then a large buck appeared and they stood off finally clashing and then locking antlers in a push shove match. We used this time to approach to about 130m's and got settled on the tall bipod. Just as the bucks parted and went through the hedge.DAMN.

We waited only for them to reappear 250 m's furher up the hedge now accompanied by a doe with twins.

They were again down wind and unapproachable so we slid past undetected and carried on.

Again down wind we saw another buck with a doe and a follower.

We carried on heading for the big wood.

On reaching it we saw a doe heading our way but from down wind again. Bloody hell I should have come in off the bottom boundry but its just flat open fields and the deer would see us approach.

while we watched the single doe in the field behind I saw a big buck chasing off a young buck and we had a chance to close in and get a longish shot from cover with a poorish(in the deers favour) crosswind. If we shot him before he crossed our wind we had a chance.

So it was "on".

We almost ran to the fence and slipped through the gateway into the plantation cut through the shoulder high canary grass and to the fence. They were still coming our way.

The youngster already in our wind but more concerned with the big lad following.

My client readied himself using the fence as a makeshift rest and just then the big buck stopped dead and stared our way he was facing us.

bug**r were we going to be beaten again.

Cautiously he stamped his foot and walked out into the field trying to sense our position.

He was quatering accross us it was as good as it was going to get.

I said shoot it.

The shot rang out and the buck fell span around on the floor and died within 10 seconds.

The shot was a little back due to the angle was misjudged and the deer just stepped forward as the shot was discharged hitting the lung but angling back just touching the saddle but thankfully not doing to much damage.

It was a reasult at last for my unluckiest client.

if you look close you can see the small exit hole near the leg of the bipod.

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares? ....... He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!
