So this has been blown out of all proportion - Exmoor Emperor

No one gets all excited every time someone shoots a monster stag in Scotland. But here we have a relatively famous deer being shot, probably for a trophy fee but also part of a cull programme, so where's the big problem with that? Marco Pierre White shooting the UK's largest Roe buck didn't make anything much bigger than the Shooting Times.

I've been reading about people saying that it is wrong to shoot such a majestic animal and that it should be left to die of natural cause's. What winds me up is people spouting crap they know nothing about! Blown well out of proportion.

The sun said; An "expert" said it was disgraceful it was shot.
I said; An expert in what???
Not deer management i'm sure at 12 years old that stag was never going to get any better and he will have sons all over the place.
Also the money side of it if an estate can sell such an animal for many thousands who can blame them.
Once the papers let people know he was there, they themselves signed his death warrant.
Better a legal hunter shot him as a poacher.
Just my opinion.

J R think you should look at your prices you are far to cheap according to this .......

Professional stalker Simon if you want to go stalking with him it will cost £160-£180 a day and if you want the head and antlers - the trophy - of your quarry it will cost you between £2-£3,000.

I was listening to the debate about this yesterday on the radio, one guy was a stalker and the other worked in Deer management trying to explain just why Deer are culled and need to be controlled - the fluffy bunny brigade were having none of it.
They proberly dont realise this happens daily around the country.

If there is at least some truth behind the reports then whatever the rights and wrongs of taking this very high profile beast are we, as shooters, have collectively been dropped in the sh*t by someone somewhere 'needing' his antlers on their wall.

It is a PR disaster which ever way you look at it, absolutely all over the media, and left our shooting organisations (mainly BASC again) fire fighting desparately. Whoever shot it and whoever let them shoot it, and only because it was a 'celibrity' animal am I saying this, are twats. The only reason for taking it should have been for puely humane reasons. It would have been much better for us all if a poacher had got it.

High profile or not this animal was past his sell by date and probaly had most of his teeth worn out.
Many large stags are shot in the "breeding season" thats good management as you can see all the stags and how they are performing, before winter sets in.
a p.r. disaster maybe but wake up deer are shot legally every day of the year mummies and babies to.
Thats deer management and hunting.
If i had had the chance "this twat" would have shot it.
Prize pedigree bulls and tups still end up on someones plate while the rosettes clutter the wall and the cups clutter the mantle piece. *aaaa*

All I have to go on is what is reported in the media, the animal may have been past his best but purely because of the potential for a total sh*t storm in the media, it should not have been shot unless it was for 100% humane reasons. The animal was in the national media previously so whoever shot it must have had some idea what teh reaction would be, but maybe pound notes in his pocket count for more than the public image of shooters as a whole. Past its best, going back etc etc, is not a good enough reason for joe public, if he was holding hinds then he cannot have been in too bad a shape. *deer1*

I agree to some point Rich, but the public will never understand deer management, SHOOTING PREGNANT FEMALES..
bug**r the media if the stag had been crossing a road and a mini bus of school kids ploughed into him killing 2 of them they would say why was such a big animal be allowed to wander about.
FOOK em I say the government realise the uk has a deer problem and will not bow to media hype.
People will never like bambi been shot walt disney should have been hung.
As for someone paying for him why not his rack makes him different from many other deer, (supply and demand.)
regards John
Public opinion....

This lad shot this this morning with me quite legally.
He is a school teacher and is so worried parents of kids he teaches find out he shoots deer he has to sneak around and keep his I.d secret.
He rang his wife to get things ready at home so he could sneak the carcass into his house/garage.
Elaborate plans and sneaking around while part taking in a valid legit past time is IMO wrong.
We should shout about what we do LEGALLY from the roofs and be heard. They don't have to like it and don't but sneaking around won't make them forget us. They don't like what we do period. enjoy it while we can and don't be ashamed of what we do. *Monkey Hanger*
