Went up to Scotland for the rut and got my first stag ever, if you though Max was out of breath you should have climbed the hill (sorry mountain ) with me and bob. Weather was fantastic too good for stalking far too bright making the job more difficult. Sitting in the lodge with red stags roaring all around us I couldnt wait to be off, I was up at first light ready to crack on only to find out hill stalking is a bit different to woodland stalking. After kicking my heels for four hours and a wee dram later we set of to find the right stag we eventually did. After one and a half hours climb trying to avoid hinds and otther prying eyes we eventually made it to the position to take the shot. Just about to take the shot and I started sliding backwoods down the hill so steep was the incline Bob my stalker for the day grabbed hold of be to stop me heading south and with one hand holding o to me and one hand shading the swarovski from the direct sunlight I took the shot. At 190 metres the 139grain soft point struck home and the stag ran 40 yards and stood there with a bit of a wobble on. I had already reloaded ( Robbo trained) and had already taken up the weight of the trigger when Bob says take him again, second shot straight into the boiler house and the stag started heading towards us at a alarming pace. As he had run 50 yards he was now directly above us he fell down the hill the remainder of the 140 yards and rested on a ledge just above us (phew). Bob was out of the traps like a whippet to try and stop him going to the bottom which would have knackered the head and the carcase. Bob performed the gralloch and we had another we dram to toast the stag. Then it was the long haul ( for Bob) down to the bottom to meet up with the Argo. I went down slower than I went up with 2 sticks steadying me down the steep incline. It was definatley worse going down than up which says a lot for someone as fit as me (not) Stag loaded on the Argo and back to the larder. Incidently both shots nearlly went through the same hole both boiler shots one high heart the other lungs, 6.5 never exited. Back to the lodge and another we dram or two. Fantastic trip worth the 800 mile round trip thanks Bob Slayer |

Nice 1 slayer sounds like you had fun, them stags when full of testosterone in the rut are hard as nails I have spoken to a few stalkers who have shot them with big caliber rifles and they have still kept going but to hit him nearly twice in the same place is some fine shooting

Gary, slayer and I used to practice out to 500 yrd's I would n't expect anything less.... Mind you he has missed a few foxes in his time and 1 or 2 deer mate.... As I have. The other thing I'd expect from him is a rather strange smell and some brown grass.

It was nearly 2:00in the afternoon bowels well evacuated before the climb to the top, having said that, the moss up there looked a lot softer than the dock leaves of yorkshire |
