Doe in the snow (it rhymes as well)

Well after going out the last 3 days, seeing plenty of deer and plenty of trade, i finally managed to get into a group. The last few days have been a case of seeing the deer but not being able to get close enough. Mainly due to us having a lot of open fields, but coupled with not much cover and no white suit to wear, I stuck out like a sore thumb !

I'd gone upto my parents house before heading out stalking and thought it would be a good idea to have a scan round with bins from the upstairs windows (the house is in the middle of the farm). Almost immediately I spot 3 deer laid up against a hedge about 3 fields away, seeing nothing else I headed out in their direction. The wind was just right as I followed the hedge towards them blowing directly at right angles to it. I got to within 150 yds of where I'd remembered them to be and stuck my head through a gap only to find a doe out in the field feeding about 50 yds ahead of me. Luckily it hadn't spotted me and I quickly retreated. I shuffled a few yards back to a gap in the bottom of hedge which gave me somewhere to get through un-seen. Once I was through the doe that was out feeding had joined the other two and laid down, now out of sight in a depression. I belly crawled about 20 yds forward until I could see the tops of their ears and also a further 5 deer laid down 200 yds further up the field. At this point 3 of the closest decided get up and start feeding, 2 doe's and a 4 point buck still in hard antler. The doe's were both of equal size so it was just a case of who ever stands first gets the 175gr partition. One kindly obliged by standing, head up, looking at the deer further up the field I levelled the cross hairs mid neck, approx 35 yds away and squeezed the shot of. The rest scattered at the shot, but only 10 yards or so (result of not using a moderator, they heard the shot and not the strike) another was still laid down when I'd fired which left me with the option of shooting another couple if I'd wanted to. I'm not a greedy person so left them for another day. Once I'd stood up, in total there had been 9 laid up in the hedge (including the 5 further up) with 8 now heading for the wood nearby.

I'm leaving whats left up there now till chrstmas when I'll probably take a yearling Doe and then wait until Buck season for anymore. I shot 8 doe's last season on there so I'm gonna let numbers recuperate a little.

Nice fieldcraft too, Tom.

Rather than getting that jacket, save yourself about £288.00 by using an old white sheet as a poncho !

Until today I hadn't worn any white, hense the standing out. But today I stuck an old plain white t-shirt on over my jacket, whether it worked I've no idea, I didnt get chance to ask the deer if they saw me or not. Haha. Ive usually always worn a spray suit in snow (never seen the need to spend big money for the 4 days a year snow we get, no offense photo), they work brilliantly. I'm finding it very hard to find a good crotchless one nowadays though!

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares? ....... He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!
